I need an inexpensive jib arm or crane with about 10 feet of reach. It will be used mostly for sweeping across the ground (sand dunes, lake shores, etc) in very remote places.

It needs pan & tilt capability, whether that is motorized or by cable, I don't care, as long as it's smooth. I tried out the Micro Dolly Jib (http://www.microdolly.com/micro_3.html) and really liked it, but the 9-foot setup is almost $9,000. Are there any cheaper solutions?

You'll find most jibs with a reach of over 6 feet are quite expensive. I've used cheaper ones (Glidecrane springs to mind), but they just don't cut it in terms of smooth movement, and ease of weighting.

I second Nick's suggestion of the Jimmy Jib lite. Absolutely fantastic jib.

Thanks. Is there anywhere in LA I can rent any of these, to try them out?

Thanks, guys. It's gotta have that pan and tilt, though. That's key.

I've been thinking about getting something like a small jib for some future shots. Either that or build an arm out of wood and have it attached to a dolly for some moco timelapse shots. I just need something that is light and sturdy.

Hello. As a Jimmy jib operartor and other remote heads operator like Egripment scaner, and also have build quite a few cranes with remote heads, I will tell you that you will need to learn how to operate first to actually tell if the remote head and jib is ok and smooth. I find the price if the triangle and remote head in the basic configuration to be very nice and smooth and fully upgradable to longer sizes. It can easily handle the red one and it very smooth. The ffocus also does work ok.
I have found that the electronic controls and gear motors are very silent and smooth..
Just some usefull input here.

Hehe, as soon as I posted that one of my friends texted me saying that Porta Jib is a POS. True?

Now I am thinking EZ Jib with at least 1 extension. Any thoughts on EZ Jib?
