  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anyone use Panasonic 12 series monitor?

Jeremy,

I have the 65inch series 12 but I never owned series 11. The gradation steps of series 12 supposed to excel series 11 by more than 1000 steps. Also, the motion resolution remains does not drop for the fast motion.

Series 12 is dead cheap for what it is, so if you can get hands on Series 12, you should go for series 12 unless you want to save money for the older model.

I would recommend the 58" if you're going to get the 12 series right now. First of all, it's not much more expensive. Second, the currently available 50" 12-series models are all 1366x768 native, they haven't announced the 1080p 50" models just yet!!! WTF?

Yep, that's the one. :) You should be able to do a bit better on price (that's MSRP there at B&H). If you call around and try to make a deal. Don't expect miracles, though. But maybe someone will cut you some slack on the SDI or HD-SDI option cards. Prices on those are all over the place. I've seen the HD-SDI card for as low as $1600 and as high as MSRP at $2499.

As far as I can tell, HDMI is still 8-bit on the 12-series panels as they're still using the same HDMI option board. But it's hard to confirm this since no one seems to be doing their own tests, or none I have seen. And asking a Panasonic tech gets a different answer from each one you ask. Some swear it's 10bit and how dare someone suggest it's not. The very next guy will admit that it's the same HDMI module they have been using since the 10-series panels (which is true) and they intend to release a new one in the near future (unconfirmed).

Jeff, B&H website has two SDI boards for the Panasonic plasmas:

HD-SDI (single link) for US$ 1480
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...c_TY_FB10HD_TY_FB10HD_HD_SDI_Input_Board.html

DLHD-SDI (Dual Link) for US$ 2320
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...D_TY_FB11DHD_Dual_LinkHD_SDI_Input_Board.html

I've been thinking Dual Link is probably not required for an HD Plasma .... any thoughts?

You Very definitely need the'PF' (part of the monitor model number) monitor as its 'full HD' ie 1920 x 1080 not a reduced resolution display which some of the others are.

The dual link card does not handle SDI ie SD signals. Id suggest considering the Single link SDI/HDSDI card and an HDMI card. Note the HDMI board is V 1.2A but does handle 10bit signals based on the specs mailed to me from Panasonic. In the US I think the monitor comes with dual link HDMI but Id suggest checking. The UK monitors come with DVI not HDMI. If you need 4.4.4 or RGB monitoring you can do this via the HDMI input but you need some form of HDMI to feed it with. Also the display is not delivered with any form of mount or stand so you will need to order either a base or stand for it.

It will also need lining up properly when you have it. its likely to be quite close out of the box but there are some basic options enabled from the hidden menu, there after line up as normal. PM me or mail me if you need to know what there are, Im not expert but have some info from Panasonic on this which may be useful.

Until I have official confirmation or someone who tested it I'll assume that te HDMI option boards are 8-bit.

And there's no real point in using someone elses settings for calibrating a panel since they'll all be different and they need around 100 hours of burn-in ideally before calibrating. If you spend money on a PF model instead of the G10 consumer model I'll assume you need HDSDI and professional calibration. Otherwise you could go for the G10 models that have 10-bit HDMI and the same NeoPDP panels. The difference is that the color calibration settings for the consumer models are hidden in the service menus.

Panasonic's specifications says TH-50PF11KR IS 1920 x 1280. They do have PD12 that is not full 1920 x 1080.

I questioned this too and asked the question of the HDMI spec from the panasonic engieering team, they say its V1.2A but supports 10 bit signals.

Agreed, thats why I suggested accessing the hidden menu, and then lining up from there, they were not easy to find at first. I edited my post to clarify.

Yeah, all the full resolution 50" models are still the 11-series. I know that full res 50" are coming for the 12-series, but I'm guessing they're waiting for current stocks to be bought up or something.

But when I feed it a 10bit HDMI signal it doesn't work. Or at least that's the case with a 42" 11-series monitor. I still get conflicting reports from Panasonic about it. So I'm waiting until they release a new board or someone can actually show me that it works and can confirm that the signal remains 10bit+ through the display pipeline and doesn't get dumbed-down to 8bit.

I needed the 10bit HDMI and also was tired of waiting for the 12-series a few months back. Bought a Panny G10 (or is it the G15?) 46". Most of the necessary controls are there in the service menu once you find it. What a pain in the ass... But it's a really nice monitor. Hopefully RED comes through with 10bit HDMI on the Rocket BOB in the near future. That is the missing link for me at the moment. Overall, I'd prefer SDI, but I do need the HDMI at 10bit... I'm starting to think I'll be ending up with two plasma monitors...

Panasonic Japan mentioned other sized like 42 inch PF11 being in stock a month ago, that they won't start shipping the 42 inch PF12 until they clear out, so your guess is correct. I was able to get the 65 PF12 because there was no 65 inch in PF11 series. But my guess at this point that Panasonic didn't give press release on 50inch PF12 is probably to promote the new size, 65 inch maybe?

Kaku, which HD-SDI board did you buy for your S12? IS the HDMI 1.3? Lim

I've been doing some research and can't find if the 12 series is 10-bit. Is it absolutely necessary that it's 10-bit?

Jeff, Ill give you $100 to find me this for $1600 :)

Lowest I can find is $2445
