  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

7D vs 5D low light performance?

Hi

Hope someone has the experience to tell me the answer on the following question:
Are there any significant difference in how the 7D and 5D (or the 1DMark IV) perform in low light conditions?

Regards

As owner of 7D I would say there are not any serious difference between 7D, 5DMK2 and 1DMK4 in low light VIDEO performance

because everything that goes above ISO 1600 get a visible noise with H264 codec.

That is based on what I saw at my collected and archived shots from all those cameras.

Making 5DMK2 and 1DMK4 better low light video performance cameras than 7D is just a marketing trick from Canon.

To make it more clear is to say that 1DMK4 and 5DMK2 are better in low light STILL PHOTO but not in VIDEO performance.

Also I could be wrong here but

somebody should do side by side test with all those 3 cams pretty soon when 1DMK4 is available.

Then we could see a difference.

I can't speak for them, but I would imagine the bloggers out there testing the 1D would disagree with you Sanjin...

Sanjin, you did not notice a difference between the FF sensor of the mk2 and crop sensor of the 7D?

Did you do a post on your results because I think I missed it...

Either way very interesting.

Read Vincent Laforets blog about his film - evidently video performance on the 1d is orders of magnitude more sensitive than the 5d and 7d. Also skew is reduced - aliasing is still evident but reduced apparently.

Last week I helped with some 5D and 7D tests for a doc. At ISO2000 the 7D had more visible noise. Not a huge difference, but more noise.

In my testing, the 7D and the 5D looked identical in noise patterns up to 1600IS0. After 1600, the 5D wins by 1 stop. I imagine the 1DMKIV will be 2 stops better when compared to the 7D.

Rick,

could be possible but also I heard from the expert that 5D has a huge heating issue in video mode.

That means with lager sensor you get more heat, then is possible to get other diverse recording picture

artifacts and to shoot in hot outdoor temperature country like a California I would take this at serious consideration.

I think you may have misheard Sanjin, it's the 7D that has issues with over-heating (not that I've noticed) - possibly due to having a better weather seal.

As for low-light, the 5D marginally outperforms the 7D but not by much and it's fair to say the 7D has excellent low-light capability.

Liam,

according to google search findings the sensor issue was already addressed with 5D and on 7D Canon warned users to be aware of that.

And my camera expert that is actually a reseller tested by himself and found that 5D is heating a little bit more than 7D.

5D sensor heat quote:

"Something more important that you should be aware of is that shooting long stretches of video with the 5D MkII will cause the camera's sensor to heat up.
(The same holds true with other DSLR's with video or Live View capabilities) There's a built-in safety shut off in the camera if you try to overdo it.
Heating up the sensor can also lead to noisier images so its a good idea to turn it off between shots to keep temperatures down.
So this is a feature best used sparingly if you want the highest image quality."

The 7D is overheating pretty often. After about 10 min of footage or camera being on for about 2h, the sensor overheats and cam shuts down in room temp.

After using the 7D with the R1 on some jobs now, I can say:
7D is not a film camera, it's a STILL camera that CAN shoot short bits of video. (pretty nice looking video:)

R1 is rock solid. We have had it on for 20h strait with no problems in blasing sun. It was hot but working normal.

..and the resolution difference is HUGE, if you need the material for anything else the web or SD TV, then R1 rock your world.

I might get a 7D for night diving, sure I'll need lights but i might try for some full moon video in the shallows with minimal illumination, anyone used one underwater at night yet?

From what I understand the 1DIV is 2 stops better than the Mark II.
When I upgrade bodies in a couple years I'm going to be able to shoot noiseless photos miles underground.

Try mailing Paul Kay in the UK, hes done quite a bit of work with these cameras underwater. He can be found via a google search.

Are you talking about video or stills mode? I think it's more like 1 stop, maybe. But then again I have been looking much more closely at stills than I have the video.
