It's tricky to put this the right way, but I'll give it a try.

It's very nice seeing a serious company making great things and not being stiff and sterile when doing it. It's a pleasure seeing creative work, product design, new solutions...all of that. Thinking "outside the box" is absolutely welcome. It is also great to see the crew having fun while creating. But...

...some things are not to be taken as normal - ever.

"Gunner" for example is cool because it reminds of "run'n gun" term...but..."Bomb" is too much...

I know that perceptions differ and tastes differ. Someone cares, someone not. This is not about that. Personally I don't care about the name. This comment is not motivated by a personal preference. This is not about "who would like what to be named after". RED has a really great creative bunch.

But...

please guys...ditch the destruction associated product naming. No need to bring in the elements used to describe the worst in mankind.
Please don't go in that direction. You are making remarkable tools for creativity.

I agree with you to a point... but maybe for different reasons.

Bomb is closely associated with two things:
1. An actual Bomb.
2. Something that has failed badly... like "I bombed that test".

Hopefully, the EVF is neither.

It is also probably a flagged word with the CIA, FBI, and the US homeland security... so I am sure they are going to read everything that we are writing in this post. Maybe Jim and RED Team are doing this just to piss off the government... in which case, I have to chuckle a little bit for that.

But as far as all the other product names, I think they are good. Gunner, rocket, etc... all seem appropriate as they suggest the USE of the product. Like you said, run-and-gun style of shooting (also called guerrila-style), and RedRocket speeds up your computer hardware like a fast rocket.

Oh well, to each his own.

Yes, completely agreed there, forgot about the RedRocket as another positive example.

War is a necessity, it has a lot of philosophy behind it, it should happen to protect the evil from overcoming good. All beautiful idealistic views that have no place nowadays, specially in the examples of it that we have.

Destruction in itself is not a bad thing. Renewal cannot take place without some sort of destruction.

And well, bomb can be a huge thing, "it's the bomb", not sure how corny that expression really is :).

Pietro...I respect your opinion, but I didn't write this to start discussing about war.

One thing, you are confusing the term "war" with "conflict". I will not comment any further, because if I did this thread would go in totally unwanted direction, polluting this forum.

This has nothing to do with idealism.

But you're criticizing the name because it's related to the "worst in mankind", so I assume you don't agree with war and destruction.

And I was merely rambling about the concepts behind it that go far beyond the current direct examples that we have of it.

So... You comden the concept behind the name, but you don't wanna discuss it? But you opened a thread about it?

So...your point was that if the concept of war would be "necessity to protect from the evil", we should be accustomed to normally using all associated recollections in everyday life, and that thinking otherwise is too idealistic and inappropriate in these times - right ?

Interesting.

Sorry, but I don't see a point of discussing a concept of war for this purpose, or to check "pros" and "cons" for that matter. I think it should be pretty obvious.

I have to say that the Bomb EVF made no sense to me...I understand Red Rocket. I understand Red Gunner. I don't get why it's the "Bomb EVF" unless, like Pietro suggested, it refers to the EVF being "the bomb" aka "Awesome, rad, supah-cool".

I also never understood the naming of that device. Sure it is cool, sure it will be "da bomb" in terms of quality, price and performance...

I am not opposed to the military style of RED, that is their choice. But I feel, that going that way, you are on a very thin line, especially when targeting an international audience. And I feel, that with a "bomb" next to my eye, my personal line of taste has been crossed.

There are generations of Europeans, that can tell first hand what a bomb in its destructive sense can mean, they can even show their missing limbs to you. Sarajevo comes into my mind, I cannot help it. And so can US and UK soldiers coming from Afghanistan. And those generations are not your grandparents. Too many of them are below 20.

In Jim's signature, there is a quote about why the camera is the most important invention of all times. Of all inventions made, it is maybe the least that can be used for destruction, for killing people. I do not deny a camera can be, when used for propaganda reasons, but it is not a killing too per say, like a bomb.

This may be a naive point of view, as I understand the need for wars and killing, but when I use a camera, I rather think, I am using it creatively for something that will create, rather than destroy. I would not like it to make me remind it of a tool, that was invented primarily for destruction.

This is my very own opinion and feel. It may not matter at all, but I actually thought for some while about the naming, because it bugged me. Now I take the opportunity to express that feeling about it.

Agree with Hrvoje. There's no easy way of saying this without offending anyone but I guess it needs to be said. I don't understand the military references either.....

Don't want to derail this thread but can't help to point out the irony of the above statement. There's no more idealistic view than thinking that war is a battle of "good vs evil". War is a messy business and it is certainly not a necessity.

This might be contradictory to your statement that the camera is the least harmful invention.

The Bomb Squad customer service also seems to be appropriate since they have to diffuse any issues the customers have before they blow up (haha, sorry for the major play on words here, but how could I resist).

But let me back RED here for a minute...

1. The camera is, in a way, a weapon. Somewhat like the phrase "The pen is mightier than the sword." The idea's that we put into a script and produce can have a profound effect on everyone that views it. Ever notice that the media can put a "spin" on what they show people and it sways their opinion of the subject matter. Having the ability to change the views of millions of people, now that is powerful media.

2. The marketing strategy isn't directly related to war. Personally, it makes me feel like an overly excited kid that's playing cops and robbers again. It makes me think the product is strong and powerful, just like the name RED suggests. For me, the marketing seems to be dead-on with the core values of RED... And it is for this reason that their marketing strategy has been successful.

That's why I stated that this view is idealistic and not realistic. This battle actually takes place within us, and that's why war and hero stories have archetypic psychological values.

Mere rambling of mine :).

Guys relaxxxx.. its a name.. its okay.

I agree, taking things too seriously was never a good thing.

While I do agree one can come up with such a comparison... I find it odd, it just never crossed my mind.

RED Has always has odd naming schemes
But I must say that I prefer their naming schemes over that of the other major camera manufacturers. Who comes up with names like "DRS-570-WDSP1"?

I always imagined a committee that is set up, gets drunk and throws around random letters and numbers, just to see with how much they can get away with...

ps. I came up with BOMB SQUAD :)

Not exactly in the same basket, Zach. ;)

Guys, I do realize that this may be also perceived as "what is this guy rambling about, it's just a name.". Keeping in mind plausible causality in both cases I'm willing to take that risk...and for the record I love RED naming and styling in general - although writing disclaimers to avoid being perceived as against something in general when mentioning one flaw - is tiring.

Well I don't really see an issue...for one its not a bomb looking device and the easiest way to prove it isn't is well...power on the camera and prove it. If they take it in then I guess you can always get RED to send a letter or something...if it came to that point of RED needing to get involved then the name will probably change...though I doubt that'll ever happen...

You have to be the WORST terrorist ever to have something labeled 'bomb' its like pointing a huge neon arrow to you being a terrorist. If anything probably don't put BOMB EVF so big on the thing itself but rather maybe have it underneath or something like that so that its some what concealed. Sort of like the same as the way serial numbers are shown on the RED. This way it looks like a legitimate product and RED can keep the name...

still don't see a problem but I do understand the concern...

Not that I care about RED's name giving to their products except for that I personally think it's mostly juvenile and silly, but whatever inspires them to work hard, is good enough to me.

I do though, on the other hand think that bomb evf is stupid. On the count of that going through security it may raise suspicion and therefor be a potential problem. I don't see why there's a need to create that possible encounter in the first place?

I travel a lot with my gear and have come across some pretty darn stupid security in my days. Don't assume that they're schooled! What so ever! Most of them are just foot soldiers with no higher IQ then 50. So why tempt them?
