  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

32 & 64GB 90MB/s CF cards, now were talkin'...

I'm assuming you mean the new Lexar 600X's.... Most likely the camera will report these new cards are limited to 2K. Hopefully RED has been testing them. But no reports yet.

Sounds like they may stick with 16gb and go 1.8 SSD for the bigger sizes. Hopefully some 32gb will surface in the next month.

As you can see the LEXAR 600x is considered SLOW MEDIA. Wouldn't format for any framerate at 4k and I was limited to 30 fps 3k (RC36). I'll have to test higher speeds at 3k to see if I can do more. Was limited in time. Anyhow... if there are any 'tricks to the trade' on how to make these cards work I'd appreciate the input. Looks like I have to pony up and buy the Red cards! Finally got our camera though & that's great news... glad to finally be baptized into the family! If you need a cheap back up solution and don't mind 3k with no high speed you should be fairly set with the LEXAR 600x cards... at least you can shoot a little longer underwater!

What would be interesting is if there is some sort of CF > SATA adapter which you could hook an SSD into.

Someone hwo knows how fast the CF card must be, for red scarlet in 3K?
And how fast are the current CF card sold on red.com today?

RED limits

RED limits

Did we finally got the answer from RED about how the media is being recognized as too slow? An in-camera test or firmware media limit?

I can't believe that those cards would be slower than Lexar 8GB 300x... Come on...

Guys, it's well established that ANY non-Red CF card or RedDrive will limit you to 2K resolutions, even if the drives in question far exceed the throughput requirements. This is likely due to a hash table inside the Red's firmware. No point in putting CF cards into the camera and using that as a speed baseline. Test them using PC benchmarking tools using the fastest CF reader you've got. Then check for dips below say 30MB/s WRITE SPEED minimum. If there's ANY, the card won't work in the real world even at RedCode28. If the card is consistently staying over 30MB/s WRITE SPEED then tell Red and see if they can get a sample to test and add to the camera's whitelist.

ADIOS RED DRIVE, if these work.

I wish- I'd really like that to- but unless Red has tested and approved the cards they will only work in 2k mode. Red has to enable the cards / put them on their approved list in the camera firmware from what I understand.

Bingo. It's now established that only Red CF cards work at anything about 2k, regardless of how fast. You could find a 1000x and today's build wont allow it to record.

When you plug in the Lexar 600x cards you will get a "Slow Media" message. I have been recording at RC36 so in that mode I could not format higher than 3k 30 fps. I have not tested at RC28. I own one of the Lexar cards so I'll let you know if I can do 4k at RC28 in any resolution.

Interesting though... I can't record to the Red Cards larger than 4k 2:1 at 30fps RC36 either! That ticks me off as I just bought a set of 4 of the Red CF cards. Anyway... looks like RED has some work to do on the CF media end.

I'm amazed that RED hasn't found any of the newer faster CF cards capable of recording R3D files.

From a business perspective i can understand why they would limit cards from other manufacturers, but surely some of these newer cards are up to the job.
Maybe it's just not high enough on the RED agenda right now?

32gb/64 would be nice right now....very nice.

I haven't got ahold of the new 600X Lexar cards just yet, nor had time to run my usual benchmarks. But I still have to side with RED on this. The newer 60MB/s and 90MB/s cards from SanDisk as well as other similar offerings are not going to cut it for the RED One. On that note, I have 4 of the 60MB/s 32GB SanDisk cards for sale if anyone wants 'em....

It's not just about the total speed of the card, it's about access, latency, consistency, which data block sizes work best, etc..

A card can be capable of "200MB/s", but if it achieves it by writing 4/MB at an average interval of 1/50 second, it's not going to work.

The current crop of "high speed" CF cards have very erratic performance. The 90MB/s SanDisk cards are just f'n terrible. And most 64GB offerings out there seem to be incompatible with most devices. Not to mention they have equal or worse performance than their 32GB counterparts in almost every situation.

In other words, 32 GB cards are still far off in the distance. Does anyone else have any other news about 32 GB cards?

i'm just still having a hard time getting my head around this. Lets look at it, panasonic have 64gb cards out, So do sony, internally they are SD chips in Raid configuration? WE have 8gb and 16gb cards for the RED, the hardware is out there....what is the problem here?...why aren't RED stepping up to the mark with this?
