  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Will the HD-SDI outputs follow industry 'standard' in the PsF vs P?
i.e.
1080/29.97PsF and 25PsF
1080/59.94P and 50P
720/59.94P and 50P

I know this is not a standard per see, but it is what the industry in general has settled on...

A turret mount could simply replace the lens mount, whether it be mini PL, Canon, Nikon, etc. If the mount is strong enough to support the 18-85mm,
(9.9 pounds) then it can support three mini primes! And yes, the 18-85 should be supported by rails... but you get the point.

Red builds their cameras and lens mounts like tanks, so they should be able to handle a turret!

I'm still just digging the turret concept on scarlet. I think it would make the camera look bad-ass and retro...
Now if they could just figure out a use for a hand crank on the side...

If their current mount could accept a turret and the non-centered weight then great, I was just assuming it couldn't.

Oh and another request which probably already has been talked thought about ( if so I'll just second the request ;) )
hardwiring not only the redmote as mentioned before but have an extension cable for the module connector might be great if not already planned to be able to put away modules batteries and what have you and still be able to shoot lightweight / handheld.

Jarred posted recently that tethering of the modules was still in the works:

Hey Mark don't worry we haven't forgotten about tethering :)

Has Scarlet S35 body the same audio balanced inputs of the Scarlet 2/3 ?

Has Scarlet S35 body the same audio balanced inputs of the Scarlet 2/3 ?

Has Scarlet S35 body the same audio balanced inputs of the Scarlet 2/3 Fixed and Interchangeable? Or do we have to go allways with the I/O Module if we use Scarlet S35?

Thanks!

As are their hard drives-- $350 to $550 for a 2TB drive is outrageous.

Gotta love moore's law. Us old fogies remember paying $2500 for an 18gig raid back in the mid nineties - and thinking it was a breakthrough price.

But I did just buy 2 tb Hitachi drives at compusa for $189 - 149 after rebate if I remember to send them in.

I presume most of you are kidding about the turrets, but to squash the fun -
Turrets introduce an additional layer of mechanics that require a lot of maintenance over time. And as Axel Broda kindly showed me on my Arri SB, turrets can introduce small flange focal distance errors without proper calibration, they can throw your focus off a bit. Luckily Arri made the very solid turrets on the S and SB. Still, single mount systems will always be more reliable and accurate.

If their current mount could accept a turret and the non-centered weight then great, I was just assuming it couldn't.

Siultaneous on-board / IO audio input?

Siultaneous on-board / IO audio input?

I remember Jarred saying that I/O modules can be stacked to give more channels of audio recording time. I don't recall what the maximum number of channels might be. But it brings up the question: If all brains have 2 built-in mini-phono audio input jacks, will a brain with a base I/O module attached have the two channels of XLR input from the I/O plus the 2 mini-jack input for a total of four simultaneous recording channels? Or does the addition of an I/O somehow override the mini-inputs?

Thanks!

If memory serves correct- audio is limited to 4 channels per camera. I asked about using two pro I/Os for 8 channels of AES/EBU and if I remember correctly, Steward said that the 4 AES/EBU Inputs will disable any other inputs.

But what can I say? A boy can dream, cant he?

Jim, Jarred,

As previously stated by Jim, that we could trade in RED One camera bodies towards later EPIC models like the FF35 or 645. Is this still an option? This has not been made clear.

2/3" DSMC ???

2/3" DSMC ???

Will the new DSMC have HDR for Motion and Time-lapse?

Well the announcement was "HDR stills ..." so it'll probably be that way - for now. ;) As time lapse is nothing else than stills that should be possible depending on the time sequence.

Talking about stills: One thing that i can't quite get my hands on is: how does the 2/3" compare to dslrs stills wise. I know it will be a mind blowing cinema tool. But stills? The quality will be more than cool as seen in some stills jarred shot a while ago but the size just might not be. As for the sensor size it compares to the canon g9-11 power shots. So it will probably not be sufficient eg for magazine shoots.
Like to hear what you think. And don't be coming: get a 1D or medium format for stills :) I would just like to know what to expect.
Or any official statements from RED ? scarlet s35 was the smallest to get the DSMC name branded to the specs. so does that mean the 2/3" is not seen as a full dsmc - I know it does support both.

Thanks for helping me clear that one out!

/p

David, I agree with you about unnecessary mechanical parts. Its the primary reason I oppose the OVF program. However, with regards to the lens turret, the development tools available to the Red engineers are more than capable of providing the tolerances and solutions necessary to avoid the problems you cite. SolidWorks, for example, provides an environment where these solutions can be simulated, refined and revised before it goes to steel. A turret can be designed that can not only provide the primary function, it could also self-calibrate the taking lens position. The rotational axis of a lens turret can have a bit more wiggle room than a spinning mirror on the OVF (which requires massive calibration to prevent it from lying to your eyes). I think a turret can be implemented relatively easily. But its design would require a developmental process. But, in the end, I think it would result in greater sales volume for those mini primes.

Hi Patrick, the 2k mode of the RED One gives us an approximation of what to expect from the 2/3" Scarlet. Here are some 2/3" TIFFs I shot on the RED One @2k:

The 2/3" 3k resolution and the quality of the miniRED primes means Scarlet stills should be considerably sharper.

150 fps burst

150 fps burst

I have a question about the 150 fps burst if anyone from RED can answer. Assuming that the highest bandwidth storage system available is being used, how long of a 150 fps burst can be captured? Also will it be possible to ramp up to 150 fps?

112 pages read! been taking my time, reading everything:

1. As someone who was kind of negative with the lack of info last month, I feel obligated to say I am SUPER stoked since Nov 30th. This is simply amazing across the board (at the risk of sounding gushing). And the cameras will be arriving (barring any "red owners first, then slow roll out") 6 months before i realistically thought.

2. "Bomb" is bad, sorry. I almost didnt get into China because my camera was Japanese (Canon). The guard / customs kid was being a real tool, and the others told him to stop in Chinese (didn't think I understood) but honestly, he was CLEARLY looking for any reason to keep my camera from leaving the airport, which would have cost my client over 30k in wasted tickets and time. I know it seems extreme, but that's the world, and while i TYPICALLY don't worry about overly sensitive people, if I am trying to save orphans or feed my family with my work, I avoid issues that hinder me. So if it says BOMB, i will scratch it off the moment I buy my first plane ticket.

... what about BIZZOMB? or BOMBIZZLE? :-P

3. people have been saying the fixed is a great deal even at 4x the cost. Someone also said "the competition, cameras under $10k..." ... SCARLET is way way better than that. Tell me if I am wrong, but dont the high speed 2/3" HD cameras start around $220,000 (no glass)! They often go over 120fps, but they are still just HD, and not really portable... (gasp, i just said "just hd"! i work so hard getting smaller clients to understand why SD is a BAD idea.)

4. Red Mini Primes are a god send. I am hoping for a modest Red 2/3" ZOOM for regular work, and getting the interchangeable with a zoom and a few mini primes. If not, I may get the fixed with a $2,000 1.6x extender and $500 wide adapter.

5. I had thought the 2/3" would be a DSMC too... guess i was wrong because I dont think of 5mp as acceptable any more, though that other link is compelling. but 3k is 3k, so that's the resolution, right?

6. Jarred, you have been awesome. Not condecending, lots and lots of great answers. Fueled my RED fire again for sure! same for the rest of red team chiming in.

7. I have a big job next May, so Scarlet will be coming out of that, unless it hits before, then I will buy it FOR that job. (and keep my workhorse XHA1 as a poor mans b-cam, cause it really is a great cam.)

8. any idea how to adapt a 1/2" canon HD eng type lens with a SONY mount to a 2/3" scarlet? lol... no, really.

9. as to crop factor, i have spent the last 30 days looking into Scarlet glass (before mini primes were launched) and I am NOT SURE the resolution coming through the 2.5x or 4x crop on your 35mm glass is high enough for 3k... but i am not an expert... somewhere in between now.

10. Thanks again for everything red team.

I really doubt that this will be a problem. The item will already have been x-rayed, so it will be clear that it doesn't contain any explosives (given that apart from the circuit boards, display panel and lenses, it will mostly be empty space). If they're still worried about it, they'll do a 20 second explosives residue test on it and your bag, eliminating any concern at all. I've heard of stupid airport security officers, but I doubt anyone is that much of an idiot to hold you up on that.

Besides, why would they think that it was a bomb anyway? It's really small, and if something was a real explosive, it would have a warning label on it saying (in Australia) something like 'Class 4.1 Dangerous Good - Combustible solid'. You could have it labelled as an explosive, but it'd never say 'bomb'. And, if you were actually trying to smuggle an explosive on-board an aeroplane, I assume that it would be unmarked and hidden...

Really, I doubt it will be a problem.

First post after having been a Red voyeur for as long as I can remember (def. pre-Red One) And now 112+ pages of Nov 30th Announcement and feedback.

I can honestly say, I have Scarlet fever.

In that scenario it's four total audio channels...
