Lens Data for non electronic lenses?

Lens Data for non electronic lenses?

The lens info is saved in the R3D metadata.

Would there be any way that I can manually tell the camera what lens is used?(maybe choose out of a list that I edited in before) - it would be very helpfull for later VFX work and would beat the analog scribble down method (you have no idea how often the scripts are not correct/lost/unobtainable and then you sit there and "guess" the lens)

In addition of course also the T-Stop but thats pushing it (the list then would have each lens that you posses with its possible tstops - to make it quick enough on shoot to select that)

It would be purely for the meta data to read out later in post and not have any function in the camera itself I guess (at least I can´t think of any practical function inside the camera that would need that).

What is the megapixels for stills that 3k resolves to? and are there any prod stills of the sensor capturing imagery at diff. iso that we can see?

In round figures 5Mp, but that's full sensor. "Normal" stills formats will eat into that.

how about heat issues that were introduced with RED ONE?? what is the operating temperatures for scarlet?? from to?
in my country's summer 40C is something normal to live with.. somedays temps might go up over 45C...

I'm a student. I have the cash in hand for a S35. Worked hard and saved. Guess it depends how bad one wants it :) Most of the students I know always seem to have money for beer...

Too bad Scarlet isn't out. Bought a 5D in the meantime.

Definitely - it all boils down to how badly you want it. Just for a simple math exercise to illustrate the point, assuming you want the 8X starter kit ($4750) plus a 16gb Flash ($495), your total for a ready-to-rock rig is $5245. Assuming it comes out in about 6 months, that's $5245 / 6 = $875/month. If that seems like a lot, 6 months x 4 weeks a month = 24 weeks, so $5245 / 24 = $219 a week. If that seems like a lot, let's assume you get a part-time job working 5 days a week, so $219 / 5 = $44 a day, 5 days a week, for 6 months. An evening job bagging groceries = Scarlet fund, instead of just surfing the net till midnight

Point is, if you really want it, you'll do what it takes to make it happen. I'm a full-time, married college student and already have a week job and a weekend job to cover school & expenses and just picked up a third freelance job to supplement my Scarlet savings plan, so when I hear people complain about the frankly AMAZING price that the RED team is debuting the Scarlet at, that just tells me that they're not too serious about doing what it takes to get one. Yes, I know there are some valid reasons that some people have, and I'm not trying to brag or anything, just pointing out that where there's a will, there's a way. It's not easy, but instead of frittering away the evening posting complaints about the price, just snag a part-time job asap and start tucking your funds away. It's doable if you're serious about it, you know? :biggrin5:

btw, just for fun, recently ran across a really interesting article (http://j.mp/GkHx4) about falling in love with ideas, versus having an actual desire to do something & what that entails. Pretty good read. It's based on the game design industry, but the principles are pretty universal.

Cropping the Scarlet S35 sensor...

Cropping the Scarlet S35 sensor...

Hi Jim, Jarred, and Red Team...

I would like to use the Scarlet S35 with 1.6X crop factor zooms from Nikon, like the Nikon AF 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX, which is a very good and versatile zoom, with minimal breathing and really sharp. (It´s the best inexpensive zoom I know) It should be like shooting at 3K cropping the 5K sensor.... It´s going to be possible to crop the Scarlet S35 sensor?

Thanks,

Juan

agreed 100%

If you dont have the money, just save for longer. May/June won't be the ONLY time to get a scarlet. Save longer, buy one in August.

Any monkey with a summer job can get together enough for a scarlet.

You know, it'd be really great to have a web-based app for calculating all this stuff out quickly. Knowing RED, they'll probably build it into their touchscreen system, lol. There's a great lens/camera preview app for iPhone I heard about on the RED Centre podcast a few shows ago called "Artemis". They already has some 2/3's stuff in their database (the Viper & Sony's F23), and even some newer stuff like the Canon 5D & 7D, so I'd bet they'll update with the Scarlet info when it's readily available. Looks pretty nifty:

I think all of those are good ideas but the audio levels are significantly shorter, not slightly. That is way too short. In fact I think it would be a phenomenal idea if the red bars were double long, hopefully that might help catch them. As bright as they possibly could be.

I hope they come up with a layout that gets the numbers off. Maybe move the battery and media icons to the lookaround like the Red button?

You mean like this?

Why put something in the look around area? The look around should enable you to see stuff.

This way you'll miss a ugly specular highlight on a shiny surface just outside the frame or whatever, the look around should let you look, not block your sight with icons, or text.

And if space is a problem, well, we're back to the RED original design, numbers and letters block less than icons.

I thought the audio bars could be shorter (and still way longer than any other camera I've used) because audio would not be the crucial factor, even if it is sometime, well, it's longer than any other camera, still let's you monitor properly.

Well DSMC concept is about modularity. For now it concerns hardware. Why stop there?
How about using the same concept here - UI ?

There will always be different preferences because perceptions and tastes differ. I think group agreement on making something fixed in digital realm can and should be avoided - if feasible.

Maybe Redcine could have additional feature to rearrange camera UI based on what you need and how you need it. I suggest making MODES - for shooting mode (quick shooting presets at few taps on a touchscreen), camera menu mode (detailed/simplified) and UI mode (arrangement/zoom in preferences/fullscreen options).

These cameras will be used for many purposes and camera interface customization might enable them to become more practical. Also, that way any camera user can bring his/hers own shooting/camera setup on a card (or turn it on wirelessly from a laptop) and start using any other camera as own.

I strongly suggest enabling this if it's "reasonably" possible from manufacturer POV.

Has anyone found out, or even hypothesized if the new 27" i7 iMac can handle Scarlet footage.

I ask because I'm seriously considering subsidizing the purchase of my Scarlet by downgrading my MacPro to the iMac.

Not ideal but would enable me to get the Scarlet and still be able to somewhat handle the RED footage.

Anyone know, or am I in limbo?

Just to hopefully put this to rest for those that have not been here to read about this. The "wobble problem", "jello-cam", whatever you want to call it is not an issue with RED cameras due the speed of the read/refresh rate of the sensor. Rolling shutters only create this problem when they scan down the sensor too slowly. In fact, as has been pointed out on here many times, a film camera actually has a "rolling" shutter. This action is actually one of many factors that gives a film frame it's look. It might have been a year ago by now, but Jim had stated that the speed of the rolling shutter on the MX sensor will be equivalent to that of a traditional film shutter (I will try and find the post and update this). RED One is already using a CMOS sensor (which by it's nature uses a rolling shutter) and there is no "wobble" problems now. Given that the new sensor is even more advanced and faster, this should not be of concern to anyone.

My Red one does have a wobble problem, but only with very high frequency vibrations, such as helicopter or wing mounts. Hopefully the epic read speed will help, but all CMOS sensors scan the image one line at a time. The spinning blade of a film shutter does not produce this result on the same wing mount, which has shot a lot of great 35mm stock footage for years.

It is leagues better than the DSLRs shooting video, where wobble in evident in simple hand help situations, but it is my greatest hope for Epic, as I can not yet get usable footage from my Red. Software processing can produce tolerable results for 1080, but I hope for real 5K I can use, without a million dollar gyroscopic rig.

The other possibility here is the in camera motion sensor. I gather it will record any camera motion in meta-data. If software could read the frequency of vibration, this could make for incredible image stabilization.

I can already foresee a sub-forum for "Touchscreen Custom Skins" - user-submitted GUI's

I think it has already been mentioned that the little tab on the left was for UI options. Not sure you can rearrange, but certainly you can turn portions on and off when you need to.

Sure it can. Ive seen 4k footage worked on in MacBook Pro's (mind you this was over a year ago). A decked out new iMac should have no problem handling 3k.

How are the monitors going to work with the FF35 and 645 cameras which have a more square aspect ratio? Will it just add pillar boxes? Will the UI then shift to the sides? Can you monitor just the wide screen aspect ratio to better fill a monitor if for instance you're shooting 16:9 or 1.85?
