  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

you lost me there...

You guys have mentioned that the modules can be separated from the main brain. So my guess the most light-weight option (for aerials, steadicam, etc...) will be to do this (separate the module(s) from the brain)...

 Peter

There is a very thin module with a Drive port on it available for people to use existing drives... it's not the standard IO module :)

So is this drive module available with epic X so we can use existing Drives and red ram ?

Both mechanical versions are going through extensive thermal and environmental testing right now.. So we need to wait till those are done before we know which way it will go.

If you want to get really exotic you could use Beryllium (1.85 g/cc). It's almost as light as Mg, is very rigid and has a very low coefficient of expansion. But since a pure Be body would probably cost a mint, perhaps a metal matrix composite made from 62% Be and 38% Al known in some circles as LockAlloy. It's what the frame of the SR-71 is made from! I know I have BrushWellman's phone number around here somewhere.

The problem with Beryllium is that it's highly toxic, in fact it is worse than lead. And machining it is also a very contaminating, toxic and environmentally hazardous process. It is a hard metal that tends to produce fine dust, known to cause lung cancer and another disorder called Berylliosis (imagine that); which affects both the respiratory and central nervous system. ...I used to work at a nuclear weapons facility, learned a lot about beryllium. And cursed its name all year round as we froze to death in the winter and roasted in the summer as all the ventilation systems were contaminated with beryllium dust and therefore sealed up. No air circulation for heating or cooling allowed....

Thank you Jarred. Now go back to work and stop answering our questions! ;)

Oh... that makes sense.

Unfortunately we can't expect perfect implementation of the first generation accessories. Asking for that would impose restrictions when we are asking Red to think outside of the box.

I guess many who aren't keeping their R1's might want to sell off some of their media, maybe make due with 16GB CF's for a while, but that doesn't sound like a viable option for hard working packages.

In the end the SSD's will be phenomenal for aerials, UW, what not. A thin module with 128GB (to start with) that can record heavy Red Codes. I am sure your mount won't mind the weight of that module Peter. Maybe we'll be able to stack SSD modules! :D

We'll still need a cable for the LCD though, unless you have an IDX or something of the sort.

The Red Mote will be a mighty fine accessory for aerials, cranes and such. In fact, I think the Red Mote Pro is probably my fav announcement right now. I think I whined about getting a wheel on the Red Mote a dozen times or more... I'm a PC and the Pro RED Mote was MY idea ;P

Red listens!

Fishing for a job? ;)

correcto... and you can use those rings on the normal REDMOTE, Side Handle or the REDMOTE PRO to handle either of the rings (Z,I,F) as well.

Sorry if this is answered somewhere else (or in one of the 40 pages of discussion I have not read yet)...

Jarred: So it sounds like the REDMOTE that comes with the fixed is Wireless?!? Awesome if true - I can think of 100's of reasons why that would be uber-useful. On the photo it's shown mounted on the back. Does it snap off of that module for wireless use? Is the REDMOTE PRO also wireless?

And also a suggestion to those trying to figure out the fixed vs interchangeable decision. Since the fixed kit includes a lot of the accessories, and since everything is modular between the two... What I think I'm going to do is get the fixed first and then later buy an interchangeable brain as another accessory. Cause I'll already have everything (sans-lenses) needed to make that one work. Unless of course RED is going to come out with a version of the 8x fixed lens with a mini-pl mount.

Beryllium = Asbestos on crack.

The current EVF can adjust the internal lens to focus on the image - so You can see without glasses. You would of course see nothing the moment You look away... Have You considered contact lenses for when You are going to use it?

 Peter

Yeah, tried em a couple times over the last 10 years, they always just irritate my eyes. Yay for internal lens focus

Although I am coming from a non-film background (traditional film), so I'm not set on an EVF.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking - 8X kit first then the Interchangeable as an "accessory". Although I'll definitely be going with the SSD & REDmote Pro right off the bat, so I hope there are upgrade options in the kit

Aux Power

Aux Power

Please tell me that the Scarletts will have accessory power connector(s) that will supply at least 1.5A.

The optional Pro I/O module does yes....

Is ISO finalized on the 2/3 Scarlet yet? I remember seeing the EPIC-X at 8,000 ISO, but I don't know if that applies to the Scarlet as well...

All REDMOTEs are wireless yes.. it clicks onto the back of the brain, or onto the back of each module :)

That new UI is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen on a piece of equipment like this.

Props to whomever at red designed this!

22. 3-axis internal motion sensor and GPS latitude / longitude data

In addition to the lat/long will the gps time also be recorded? Is this data recorded on a per frame basis? Is red willing to disclose what rate sensor part is they are using so we might be able to get some more detailed specs on it? Is the lens data also recorded (focal length, focus setting, aperture, etc)?

23. True Shutter Sync In/Out and Genlock

By 'True Shutter Sync', does this mean that when we trigger the camera externally (from ttl signal?) that the entire frame begins integration at the same time or is there any sort of rolling shutter (electronic or otherwise)? Does the Sync In trigger the start of integration or does the duration of the pulse also determine the integration time (i.e. do we have external realtime control over integration time)?

Are these various capabilities applicable to all the scarlet/epic cameras? Are these capabilities built into the brain or some other module (e.g. Pro I/O)?

Additionally, the price for the Scarlet S35 remained unchanged (so far). Is it safe to assume the estimated price on the FF35 will also remain unchanged? Is there any other information remaining/expected for the FF35?

Out of curiosity, why not a RJ45 for GigE?

Probably because a standard RJ45 jack isn't very robust with the 8 thin exposed wires inside it. This does make a lot of sense to use a LEMO, but...
