  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Help choosing a good Monitor

Not to side track but how would you mount that in the field? It looks like its meant to go rather on a server rack like grid as there doesn't seem to be a back mount or anything for a stand, anyone can clarify? apologize if it seems an ignorant question but just genuinely want to know...

Hi Imran,
I think it has a vesa mount through which you can mount on to a stand.

Is anyone using the TV Logic 17" HD-SDI Monitors? If yes, what model?
Please post your feedbacks.

Thanks.

Yes, i am using the Multi Format TVLogic LVM-171WP monitor
I think it is better than the Panasonic.
The TVLogic 24" is a grading monitor which is used in post houses.
It is most important that your field monitor will be calibrated as you post monitor but unless you are also the post house I doubt if this is practical.

I've had Marshall's before and got rid of them because poor customer service. May pana 1700 has gone in for service and was turned around quickly. Love to know about TV LOGIC.

I'd stay away from single SDI input.

Hi Vigna,
we're using a JVC DT-V17L2DU 17" the last 18 months and it's a very great monitor.

It has 2 HD-SDI + 1 HD-SDI out, 1 DVI (for reviews from computer) and the 12v 4 pin XLR that allows to use floor batteries or mounting a V mount battery plate the RED Bricks.
It could last almost a shooting day with only 1 RED Brick!

It went once to service for a minor problem with 1 HD-SDI input and in Madrid they need just 24h to solve it!

I showed it many times side by side with a 24" Sony LCD (a Broadcast model I don't remember the code now) and DoPs always want to have the JVC and let the Sony for Agency/Clients.

IMHO is the best quality/price solution for HD-SDI in the market.

I have 3 of the pana 1700s and 2 of the Pana 8.4" units. They have all worked hard for years and have not let me down! I just added the Pana 1760. I do have 3 of the Sony 14" HD CRT monitors but we rarely pull them out due to their bulkieness and smaller screen size (and they have been in the shop!)

Best,
Rich

We bought a second JVC 2 months ago, the DT-V17L3DU 17" it's exactly like the JVC DT-V17L2DU but with a waveform, but it's the worst waveform I ever saw. As far we always shoot with REDs and we don't use it we don't care but it's absolutely unusable for PRO works. If you want a waveform... go ASTRO!

Thanks for all your inputs friends. We are now contemplating on buying the Panasonic BT-LH1760W 17" Widescreen HD/SD LCD Video Monitor since

a). There have been positive feedbacks about the Panasonic HD-SDI Monitors.
b). Marshall 17" monitor has only one HD-SDI Input
c). JVC's Waveform is not that great
d). Astro and Eizo are very expensive.

This is what I have understood from the feedback from the posts in this thread.

Panasonic 1700s have been one of the most commonly used field monitors for awhile now in rental houses. You see them all the time on commercial and TV production and they pop up in big budget villages here and there too (I think 2012 used a pair for their set along with a raptor recorder for playback).

Saying that, the TV Logic LVM 17's are great too. They can calibrate their models to match for post work and the panels are good performers, especially on the smaller models. They also have a budget model with fewer features but the same panel and body used. We modify our yokes to work on junior or baby pins for field work, add a battery plate to the back with a carry handle, and have a custom ATA case the allows the whole rig to mount directly from the case to a stand.

Sometimes it comes down to personal preference or using familiar gear compared to what you already have. If you are familiar with Panasonic brand gear, you can certainly get a great oppenheimer mount and have a great field unit. I lean a little more towards TV Logic, which also has a new 17" coming out soon.

As for Marshall, I find their line to be lacking compared to the above mentioned units.

For field monitors, I find the viewing angle is one of the most important factors to be considered. I've seen the TVLogic 17" a lot on location, but the viewing angle was not very good to my taste. I haven't used the JVC 17" model, but I've used the 24" model (8-bit) extensively for in-stuido use. Unfortunately, the JVC 24" didn't really have good enough viewing angle, so I had to drop it.

From my experience, JVC 24" (8-bit) shows better contrast than the TVLogic 24" (10-bit).

I've seen the Panasonic 17" on location a few times, and it shows better viewing angle than the two mentioned previously.

Overall, I think the JVC has better contrast with its glossy panel, and the Panasonic has better viewing angle than others.

I'm thinking about purchasing the Panasonic model for location use at the moment.

BTW, I'm using the 42" Cine-Tal as grading monitor. It's got very good color and above average contrast, but the viewing angle is not too good. This monitor supports
a whole lot of functions to satisfy all my current needs and much more. But no one wants to carry this monster around on location I believe :)

Great post Jason. Thanks.

Can anyone point out the difference between a Panasonic BT-LH1710 and BT-LH1760? Which one is better among these two models and why?

I believe that the only difference is that the BT-LH1760 has an LCD that is equipped with double speed drive, helping eliminate motion blur; plus $1,000 more. Other than that, the specs seem to be the same.

I don't know about the TV logic 17", but the smaller 8-9" monitors look terrible. They look about the same or worse as Marshall ones. Both units I've used are washed out and way oversharpened. Maybe you can adjust it in the menu, but there isn't much you can do with the controls on the face of it. I'm surprised that people like these. Like I said, maybe the 17" is better, but the small ones look like crap.
