  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ASIC issue...

BTW... this is the Side Module Upgrade. We have added a run/stop button and user settings buttons to the module. It is shown on Scarlet 8X fixed, but is the same for any brain.

There's my Scarlet. Sweet lord, that's amazing.

For anyone who's interested, there's some great pictures and explanations about how ICs look inside and how they look at this blog. On the second page there's even an explanation of how gates are implemented in hardware (the program that the ASIC implements are made up of gates).

The examples there are more generic chips like microcontrollers and older computer processors, but the idea is the same - it's just that an ASIC is made to do a very specific function (or a set of specific functions).

Very interested. Was just wondering what the heck an ASIC's was.

Thanks for the link Stephen.

Jim, it's hard to tetl from the draft render what that Run Button is made of... but no chance that it's translucent and acts as a tally light, is there?

It almost appears "clearish", but then again so does the Red Logo, so I'm wondering if that's just the render.

Thanks.

Thanks Stephen really good article, thats for the info.

Yes it Scarlet fixed is looking very sexy, definitely the next camera purchase.

I dunno *sigh* every time I start thinking "no I can't possibly afford a Scarlet" Jim goes and posts something like that (Not to mention the 30th Oct thread). Oh dear, my poor bank balance :biggrin:

I worry that the big boys have seen too much and are about to roll out something of their own. I am concerned that too much is being shared and the competition is circling like a pack of wolves waiting for a weak moment to pounce on their prey.

It might help to think of it this way: Since the announcement of the Scarlet program (some time ago now) all the competition has done is add video capability to some of their DSLRs. Also that video functionality has some real limitations. I fervently believe that when the Scarlet is released it is going to make the competition look like weaksauce. Red has proven to be a very nimble company, and from what I see they are leading in the marketplace of ideas. It's clear they are upset about the delay, but just think how much better they will be for this experience when they design their next camera.

I have a Canon Scoopic 16 MS. For anyone familiar, you can imagine why the Scarlet 8x fixed is my dream camera. Thank you for the render, Mr. Jannard. I may have to stay home on the 30th, because I'm going to be worthless at work. As for the delay, I look at it this way: Anticipation is enjoyable too.

hey jim
.......no one can dare to make a masterpiece after telling the entire world that he is making it. you are doing it, (when i say you, i mean , the entire team of red).

we believe you, you will do it and whatever the product would be, it ll be cut above the rest, no doubt it, i pray to GOD personally, that do some miracle to solve your problem, and you will get your results soon.

hope to see red scarlet and epic in the hands of independent filmmakers.

Melted down my guess. The less R1's out there the more likely they will be to become a coveted collector's item which helps the brand.

Schools. Education.. These are perfectly working cameras that make great pictures folks. You don't trash good equipment.

Epic and Scarlet will not make the R1s pictures any less beautiful. In fact, the R1 will be able to use the SAME sensor as Epic so it's really a matter of design differences. That's all.

Come on...

:shocked:

sorry to be the ignorant one here...

I am curious if the ASIC that is being developed can be implemented in products like REDRocket, REDRay and others? Is it even possible?

I think it could be really beneficial to use the 'REDChip' in all of their products to make REDCode processing a seamless activity. Maybe this is why Jim has consistently said the ASIC is the key to this problem.

I will add my voice to the ever-growing number saying thank you to Jim and the whole team, for:

1. Your honesty and transparency, so rare, and so refreshing;
2. The courage to forge a product that's unprecedented, and incredible;
3. Holding yourself to a high standard, and doing it the right way.

While I have not in the past been blessed with the finances to go RED from the beginning, when it was all only an idea, I have been a RED owner in spirit since that time, as I truly believe in the product and the company. It's been amazing to watch everything develop, and I live vicariously through all of you on this wild ride.

Thankfully, the cash will be appearing in my bank account soon, ready to be traded for a shiny new tool... So, from an (extremely) excited near-future RED shooter, thank you for enabling all our dreams to move to a screen with ever more ease and quality.

Regarding the Ones that will be traded in... why do so many seem to think they will be of no use with Epic and Scarlet in play? They are fantastic cameras, and will remain so for years. The quality of results the give us right now is so high, that even in five or ten years, I dare say they will continue to be effective tools with which to capture imagery, and tons of people would love to use them. Even after I have a sweet little Scarlet/Epic system in my hands, if the dollars fall into my hands, I plan to also pick up a R1. They are great cameras, and I'd love to put one to use, even despite/because of their quirks/personality.

One more time: Panasonic, Canon, et al dominate the market for a very good reason and they will for many years to come. If you pay attention they are developing the future slowly but surely. The VDSLRs are out there, cheap and very close to perfection. RAW capture? watch for it in due time. The options are gonna be many and for our benefit.

The same thing could of (and was) said about ARRI, DALSA, and Panavision dominating the high end Digital market just a few short years ago. I think we can all agree that RED now is dominate, with more RED cameras out there in sheer numbers alone than all the high end digital cameras combined.
