  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is the Panasonic TH-42PF11UK still the plasma monitor of choice?

The TH-42PH11UK is not a 12-series as Loren labeled in his link. It's just a late addition to the 11 series line. :( Oh, and its specs are a complete joke.

When you start comparing specs of most of the "pro" monitors against most of the current consumer panels, the "pro" models begin to look like crap. If you start comparing them with your own eyes, side by side, your eyes will tell you the same thing. Or at least mine have. The *ONLY* reason I can come up with to buy a 11-series Pro model is if you absolutely, positively, must have SDI / HD-SDI inputs on the panel itself. But it makes a lot more sense to

Panasonic better pull their head out of their ass for the upcoming 12 series. As of right now, I can get a much better image and display by using a G10/G15 labeled (12th gen panels) consumer display along with an AJA HD-SDI to HDMI 1.3a converter. If I could get 10bit HDMI out of the RED Rocket, that would eliminate an unnecessary link in the chain.

So what is the current best 11 series to go with?
And if there is a better consumer model available, what is it?

Getting lost in all the these version/models.

I was mistaken, I didn't even look at the resolution, which is a deal breaker.

I would like to add that I have been using a Gateway extreme XHD3000, 30 inch monitor for nearly a year now. It is the highest resolution I know of, 1600P, 2560x1600. It is a dual link DVI. The pixel frequency MHz is 268. When the monitor is set at a lower 1080P resolution, the pixel MHz is 148. It has two sets of color controls, one on the monitor and another via a software program. The best part of it is the audio which is the best I've ever heard. (I can't stand dolby.) My only complaint is the blacks leave something to be desired and you have to look at it straight on for best performance. Not at an angle. I have read several ratings that they burn out after a year. As I believe heat is the real killer, my guess is that gamers haven't paid any attention to heat, such as setting up a tiny fan nearby. I have done nothing so far as I can put my hand over any part and it the same temperature as luke warm water. Retails now on line for about $1000.

TH-42PF11UK in europe is replaced with a TH-42PF11EK, which Im told is identical. The 12 series are begining to emerge which appear to be 40,000:1 contrast ratio, the 11 series are 30,000:1. So far as the numbers are concerened I think you need the 'PF' and '11' or '12'.

This is how our TH-42PF11EK is set up in the picture menu. It used with HDSDI input. Any views welcome.

was just talking to a dealer about these. He said the 42 in the sweet spot for these. Something to do with the amount of pixels on the screen vs the next size up in the pf11 series when viewing 1080p material.

The 42 looks good to us. I think the dependency is the viewing distance we were working on 4 x the height or 2.5 of the diagonal of the screen.

Could you use one of these,
http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/miniconverters/

(SDI out of card to HDMI in 11series) instead of getting the HDSDI board on the display?

Also, I'm considering,

42" 12 series

or

42" 11 series

which is better for color critical work?

Looks like the 11 series come with HDMI onboard, with the 12 it is additional?

just started looking into these..

In terms of calibration, Matrox MXO and many others speak wonders about the ability to calibrate any monitor using the provided proc amps, would these proc amps provide accurate calibration? If not, what do you guys recommend?

Im told this isnt a problem, but the Panasonic HDMI board is HDMI rev 2A which apparently supports 10bit. The very new boards are intended to be HDMI rev 1.3, I think they are only just available now.

It depends on the purpose of the display.

2.5 x diagonal distance is okay for editing, but too much for HD color work, IMO.

While getting the quote for 58 inch PF12, I was told that 50 inch is coming, too. Very reasonably priced. I checked with the HDMI card not being 10-bit, but the Panasonic sales person wasn't sure...

I'm getting a 58pf12 in a week with a hdsdi card! Will post a review and pics. I will have a guy come in and probe it to 709 for me as well. CANT WAIT!!!!!!

am going to buy it to..

i hope there is no issue compared to the 11th series....

really hope so...(you know, sometimes a newer generation does not mean necessarily better...(but panasonic it's serious so should be better...)

PS:what system are you going to use to calibrate it?a guy with his own patch generator/reader and changing the pana color control settings manually for the HDSDI input? (no LUT?)

Thanks

g

I checked this with panasonic in the UK. They say the card is 10bit but they are changing from the existing card which is Version 1.2A to HDMT 1.3. Im not sure of the difference but they did say definitely 10bit.

Be good to check it in practice though.

Im trying to compile a list of base settings for these monitors and am in touch with panasonic about it. Its slow progress but Ill post what IO find out here. if you discover anything then please let us know.

One thing Im trying to find out more about is in 'Monitor' mode which is the suggested set up as this mode excludes any automatic ajustments, 100% white (using an SMPTE chart) measures at 24 FL but contrast control is not ajustable. In 'Normal' mode contrast is ajustable and 32 FL is possible. I've yet to discover if there is any additional processing happening in 'Normal' rather than 'Monitor'. Any info would be welcome on this.

Shxxxt,

I can't buy the new 50 or 58 inch because they still have old ones in stock (I guess where Jason is don't have this problem). I'm allowed to buy only the 65 inch but I'm gonna go for it.

Dave, thanks for the clarification about the HDMI being 10-bit, great, I can't believe the top sales of Pana couldn't answer this.

Also, to clarify my previous posting, PF12 is not the master monitor replacement I've been talking about. Pana is going beyond to really go with Plasma to comply the requirements of being "master monitor". We might see this at InterBEE. Let you guys know if I see anything at the show.

I'm getting Klein K10.
