Well it's been a while and we're still waiting for details, getting more anxious towards the end of October obviously. As we wait for the release of Scarlet and the DSMC system, what other industry related products are we getting pumped on?

I'll start... As an avid action sports enthusiast/filmer, helmet cams get me all tingly inside. The new Go Pro HD helmet cam (footage here: http://www.goprocamera.com/hdheropreview/) has gotten me the most pumped since the announcement of the Scarlet. 1080 and 720p. 720p up to 60fps, 170deg wideangle, SDHC cards up to 32gb, 3hour li-ion battery, waterproof housing, only $299 and SMALL. Seems to be an excellent cam to add to the quiver which will hopefully include a Scarlet soon. I pre-ordered right away.

What products is everyone else excited for/tying themselves over on (until Scarlet)?

nice footage, but you tell me it's HD but the aspect ratio is 4x3 ????????????????

Wow, that is some great footage.

I'm not really buying anything while waiting for the Scarlet, but I'm searching all over my house for my 16mm lenses. Still can't find them... yet.

wow thats awesome footage.

i wish it shot 24p, i'd buy 3 lol.

The gopro shoots 1080p @ 30fps, 960p @ 30 fps (this is the 4:3 resolution and used because of the widest coverage of it's fisheye lens) and 720P @ 30 and 60 fps. The 720p mode has a narrower fov than the two other modes(I think something like 130 degrees instead of the ~170 the 1080 and 960p modes provide). The product pdf on their page is quite useful, and the camera seems like a really nice thing for extreme sports/crash camera. 1080p camera with a waterproof case for 300$ isn't shabby at all.

That camera is totally badass. That will totally kill my consumer level underwater video business, but that's life.

New iMacs with intel quad core i7 procs and up to 16 gb ram...

This would be damn nice with a Scarlet. The higher than 1080p display kicks the ass of most other displays, and the new mouse looks fun, too!

Great video... and now I'm gonna be sick...

Will they finally add another firewire port onto those iMacs?

such a shame. Such gorgeous/powerful computers, but they just dont have enough firewire ports.

Yeah, but it has up to 2TB internal HD capacity now. Otherwise, just get an external with multiple FW ports so you can daisy chain. It's not AS fast as a second port, but it's also not a Mac Pro tower eating up more space on/around your desk.

FWIW, I don't know anybody who keeps their MP on their desk - it's usually under it or rack-mounted. :001_tongue:

In my (admittedly limited) experience working with Redcode, FW just doesn't cut it (no editing puns intended). I also wouldn't use a single internal HDD as a scratch drive if there are other, better options available to me (e.g. external RAID). Unless, of course, you're working off of a laptop with no ExpressSlot, then FW is pretty much the way to go. That's the point, I think, to use what you have available to you to the best of its ability, while trying not to whine about why it's taking so long to transcode/render/encode something. If you're okay with cutting proxies, you can definitely configure your settings to best match the specs of your machine, no matter what it is (unless it's a dinosaur; in that case, no settings will help).

Back on topic, I'm definitely excited for what Canon and Panasonic have in store for their next-gen prosumer video cams. I like to think that with the advent of Scarlet, they're going to have to skip what they were initially working on as next-gen cams (typical minor improvements to ergonomics, SW, etc) and go straight to implementing 2/3"-sized sensors in an XL/HVX form factor, utilizing non-proprietary, solid-state media (e.g. SDHC, CF, XDHC? etc) and base it on a stronger acquisition codec (AVC-I, perhaps, in Panny's case at least). I don't expect to see these cams any time soon, especially with Panny just having released the HPX300, but it's nice to think that there will be even more great options for anybody in any situation in the next couple of years.

As for me, my heart (and wallet) are set on Scarlet. I really, really, really hope that we get some info on the RMPs on the 30th!

I picked up a MOTU Ultralite MKIII firewire audio preamp/mixer that I currently use for FFT analysis of room acoustics and sound systems. But I chose it because is also has SMPTE timecode read/write/genlock capability that should work well with Scarlet for double system field recording to a laptop or digital recorder. Super clean low noise preamp.

That looks like a pretty neat mixer/preamp. Great price too. Love that it has MIDI capability as well. As far as we know, you'll need one of the I/O modules to take advantage of the TC I/O / Genlock, right?

Also, can this run off batts? I ask, because I only saw DC and FW bus-power (which is pretty good) on the product page. It might be tough to have (one of) your sound guy(s) tethered to a laptop when you're out in the field.

While we're on the topic of being pumped for current/future hardware and firewire.... has anybody had a look at Light Peak being developed by Intel and Apple? This is one tech that will be SUPER beneficial to this segment.

I have in mind tethering it and the laptop to the house mixing console for music events. It will also record timecode clock along with the music tracks to digital recorders with SPDIF inputs. Be pretty easy to rig a battery pack for it, but a cart based system with wireless mics would be more practical.

Yup. It's all speculation at this point, since no one has any public plans to implement it (that I've seen), I'm not sure I can bank on it. USB took a few years to standardize, so I'm guessing by 2012 we're cooking. If I'm picking up a new computer in the next 6 months, I'm pretty sure I've got no shot at having Light Peak on it, so I might as well pace myself for a late 2012 upgrade...

The tech looks incredible though. You could conceivably run a line straight from the camera to the computer - reducing the transfer time and simultaneously the weight and size of the camera.

i'd love it. My macbook pro could become my mutli-cam monitoring system!
