  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Mysterium-X...

I'm now shooting only ISO 800 and 2000 for testing. 800 is the new 320... only better.

Hi Jim,

Just to be clear, when you say "shooting 800 and 2000", this is still just a metadata/monitoring/post-processing choice, yes?

You're not really changing the sensor ISO when shooting?

So what is the ACTUAL ISO for the sensor?

Thanks,
Antony

I'm guessing 800 ASA. I think he is saying that the noise floor is much cleaner so the higher ASAs up to 2000 and beyond are much more useable as well.

The development news gets more and more exciting. The development blueprint RED is laying out is mind boggling. RED will soon be 'the new standard' in the marketplace. The bar is rising!

Man the 30th cannot come soon enough!
So the ASICS are good then? No serious problems so far?

I think the way to make the time pass faster is to stay off of RedUser...unfortunately, it takes to much self-control.

That's been my policy and then you come and find threads like this! The other day a Jim J thread was more than 25 pages deep before I found it. Hmmm

Can't wait to shoot with the Red Jim, really can't wait.

Jim, if the camera business ever goes arse up you oughta sell drugs. You really know how to get folks hooked and keep 'em hooked. You're the Pied Piper of the camera world and I'm following as blithely as the rest of 'em.

I can already see pushers on the streets selling vials full of a strange, red fluid and saying "This stuff will blow your mind!"

Ambient and household lighting enabled!

Ambient and household lighting enabled!

I have just stopped down the aperture to the equivalent of ISO 16000. Amazing to get a useable image.

Jim

I know you Hollywood pros have access to excellent lighting and Key Grips who know how to maximize it, but for us, lighting with the large soft boxes we have isn't even an option in certain situations (museums, galleries, hotels, churches, etc.). This will be a revolution for us. We've been making do using noise reduction filters like Neat Video's, but there is a plastic-like look to it when we push it. You can not imagine the implications of this, in terms of the less destructive thresholds we will be able to use on our noise filters, or even no filter at all. Like I have said earlier: Our works will be divided into two eras: BS (before Scarlet), and AS.

It sound amazing and I guess this will do wonders for outdoor keying, and tracking to.

Jim, I have been believing in you form the start and I was one of the few that was right when ”the fraud” really turned out to be the real thing. And now with the modular system and optical viewfinder etc, almost everything I was hoping for has come true. But one big thing remains on my wish list, a non rolling shutter brain. As a post production guy I would give anything for a RED brain with a CCD. Is that even possible? I have been used to work with HD footage because in some case the rolling shutter just does my work almost impossible and now with RED the problems from the 35mm world remains.
Do you think my last wish will come true?

Any way, your guys are just amazing, my absolutely best wishes and regards /Pontus W

(Pleas change my name to Pontus W)
Have you used a RED One before? There haven't been any complaints about the rolling shutter. Plus, the newer sensors are supposed to reset even faster, eliminating any claims there might have been about it being too slow.

By the way, you have a sweet [real] name.

True!! It will feel like an very nice refresh. In Scarlet Red have really squeeze in everything I didnt even dear to wich for already in next camera purchase. No wonder all exitment!!! The high rez, bit depth and dynamic range. Ok I should not forget the redcode instead of dvcpro HD. I have an hvx 200 and "post" something shot in 8bit just don't do it for me anymore! Cant wait to start record cleaner and more crisp images!

Sounds sweet! But I'm curious... How is the blue channel holding up? Improvements?

My test bed is a modified RED ONE. ISO 2000 is the highest it goes. The new cameras will go higher. The cleaner the sensor, the more you can push it.

Ha ha, pretty dam Impressive Jim, especially considering that with my new Phase One P30+ DB system I got to stay in the 400 ISO to get noise free images, 800 ISO usable images and 1600 ISO with lots of Post Noise reduction, and surely not good in off for a Paid assignment.

In deed RED will present a all new ground of possibilities, can't wait.
