Beautiful place, indeed. Until you cut down the trees.

Fabián

True, but...You can't tell me those shoes you're wearing aren't made of wood. Or that car your driving? Wood.

Frank: nur genug! (manchmal)

Well, coincidentally, I am currently not wearing any shoes, nor driving a car. Good point, though-- I should have been more specific. I am not opposed to human-advancing commodities, but logging in the Pacific Northwest (as is the case in most of the world's forests) has been an unsustainable practice for quite some time, with only 10% of the original forests left in Washington State, for example. We can do better.

Nonetheless, I can appreciate the value of the documentary, and for one hope it will be available in english to be fully appreciated. I just prefer my trees standing, that is all.

Cheers,

Fabián

Hi Fabián,

our film looks into the environmental aspect very much, too. It was a must for us in the writing process as well as a requirement by the network.

I´m hoping for an English version also, but have no info from the network in regard to that so far.

James: How come ? Ever been here ??

Frank

hi, i have watched your documentary on the french chanel of Arte during my lunch break, and appreciated it very much.

I was wondering, How long did it took to shoot all this footage ?

and what else from the red did you use ?
matebox and filters and everything ? what about the sound ?
any artificial lights, for the indoors shots ?
how many people were involved in the shooting of the footage ?

My apologies Fabián--your point is well made. I trust my comment was interpreted in the (almost) complete humour it was meant. I fully endorse your closing thoughts.

James: How come ? Ever been here ??

Frank

Yes Frank, in an almost previous life. I studied German for 6 years at school, and was lucky enough to attend school in Germany for a couple of months, in a small town near Hanover. I travelled around Europe in the year after finishing school and managed to be in Berlin on the night of reunification--quite a night. I don't know why such a delicate, romanic language :wink5: should stay with me, but a fair bit remains.

Irgendwie, ich hoffe auch das einen englischen Version kommt werden. And they do a better job translating than me!

I agree it was a pity that web version is so compressed, but at least it gives us all an idea of the programme, and your stills show how amazing the footage really looks. Was it broadcast in HD (>720)?

Frank, I'm glad to hear you touched on the importance of the sustainable management of the forests-- thanks for sharing your work here.

I look forward to a release in English.

James, no apology necessary-- your comment was well-interpreted and received. I'm still chuckling about my wooden shoes ;)

Cheers,

Fabián

Hi !

It took us three weeks to get all the footage. From those three weeks, we actually planned to have three days off, but we ended up shooting the whole time due to unforeseen developments with the loggers. In the 52 minute version of the film, which airs next sunday, you can see a way longer loader repair scene. This wasn´t planned to be shot, but of course we did.

We used the RED EVF, the RED Drive, the RED LCD and about 16 CF cards. From ET we used the EFV mount, the Drive mount, the Ultra lite 15 to save us some weight. Our matte box is an ARRI MB20 II. Focus was done with a Chrosziel Studio Rig. Filters were pretty basic: ND´s, ND grads, POL, Infrared and CTB for tungsten lit interiors.

Lenses were RED 18-50mm, RED 50-150mm, RED 300mm and ZEISS HS 18,50,85mm

Sound was recorded directly to the camera (build 17, no upgraded audio board by the time) using a MM1 for ambient sound recording and an SQN3 with MKH416 mic for interview stuff.

I lit the interiors with some very basic stuff, all tungsten to save weight: 3 1K fresnels, 3 800W Arrilite´s open face, 3 Dedoligts, 1 Litepanel. Those were partly corrected with CTB or bounced with Lastolites, which we also used for fill while shooting exterior stuff in the bright sunshine.

The crew consisted mainly of 6 people.

HEHE ! Well, just keep practicing, James and it will all come back !
I will look into the possibility to do an English version, but I can´t promise anything, it´s out of my hands, I can only make a recommendation to the network.

Concerning the web version: I´ll try and see if I can post a least a small clip in a better quality soon.

The film was aired and will air again on sunday in SD and 1080p on satellite.

Hi Fabián,

well one couldn´t do such a movie without talking about those aspects, too. And I was convinced after wrapping the film that the loggers and the government very much care about the environment. So many rules and regulations for all involved.

Frank

thanks for your answers.
i'll try to watch it when it airs sunday at 6pm (if i don't forget).

how did the R1 reacted to the dust, heat, swet...Etc ?

It did great ! We were surprised to see that we didn´t even have one single shut down or any other problem at all. It was very dusty, hot and rough to shoot out there, but the only real problem was to change lenses under those conditions.

Of course, my AC had to clean ALL the stuff each evening for three weeks in a row and we were constantly complaining about the dirt, but it never was more than annoying.

I can highly recommend the R1 for that kind of shooting, but you have to keep in mind it´s a heavy beast, no matter how much you strip it down.
