  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I recently rented a red one (build 20) and conducted about 10 interviews for a documentary. After the first day, i found that all the footage was black in Red Cine and Red Alert, but not on the camera.

After consulting the forum, I found the problem, which was that a bug in build 20 made all the settings for RGB be -100 by default for each clip. Relieved i continued on, knowing that I'd be able to figure things out later.

Now, I have recently purchased Final Cut Studio 3 in order to be able to ingest these clips without having to transcode, but they're coming in black, and I'd like to somehow fix the R3D files in their native state before they get to Final Cut.

I'm sure this has been a common issue, so I'm wondering what the conventional wisdom is on this?

How do you recommend adjusting all the -100 settings back to 0?

is there a way to open the .R3D files, make this quick fix, save them again, and then ingest into FCP? Or is there a reliable fix in FCP?

Close FCP. Open one of the clips in Redalert, reset the clips to 'Default'. Apply a look if you like. Save a preset (File->Save Preset) in Redalert.

Go back to FCP, and in the L&T window go to the gear menu and choose the new preset you've made for RED footage.

In future, once you pick up the problem you can generally reset the camera's look settings to avoid having the issue with all your footage.

Thanks Cail! This was only the second time I've ever used the red, and I'm still new to the whole film world. so i got as far as the gear menu in the L&T window in FCP, but then couldn't find where to choose the new preset. does this look like your interface?

Thanks again!

Hey, I actually figured it out. Thanks so much for your help, you're a lifesaver. If you have a moment, my last question is about which setting the color space and output LUT/gamma space should be on when i save the presets in red alert.

Thanks!

Brendan

Whichever you like, really. Generally should be whatever you were monitoring with (which the "metadata" button in Redalert will show you) - when in doubt use REC709 gamma and Redspace colour.
