All I have read for months is guessing. I hope we here something soon so people can sell their crystal balls and get a RED! I know RED is keeping silent on purpose at this point for competeive reasons. Here is to 2010 and until then lets torture the pitful 7D.

I don't see competitive reasons being a factor. Scarlet and Epic specs have been posted on their website for a long time now. Sure, minor things will change here and there by release. But every company basically knows what they are up to.

Well, see, I think part of the reason that RED has shed their old tactic and become more undercover is because they will probably be changing things slightly more than minorly. Maybe not majorly, but I'm guessing somewhere in between. The landscape has changed a lot in the 9 months since RED originally announced the DSMC line, and I think they are probably gonna have quite a few tricks up their sleeves to make for an interesting release. Now I've been wrong before, but I'd be pretty surprised if RED came out with exactly the cameras listed on their website. Time will tell...
Peace,

Red have been very open about why they are being silent.

Every time they released specs and potential release windows early, they got slammed.

When they have something, they will release it. Until then they are still cooking and won't know the specifics until then.

I think the 7D was built with video in mind and not as an after thought. I also believe Canon can do more with it via firmware releases but is waiting to see what RED comes up with. They could add Raw video to the 7D no problem if they need to. They will then compete on the price point because they can there. Now a 7D with raw video and interchangable lenses would be worth a lot to many and at $1,700.00 ahh hard pressed to buy a scarlet at that price point for a lot of people. Only thing you would really miss is frame rates and I get Canon could change that some as well. Great times to be alive.

I like my xlr jacks. And phantom power.

I very much doubt this - recording compressed RAW would probably require additional hardware such as a different ASIC - as in, if they were going to do it, you'd already be able to... No way it would have anywhere near the horsepower to do any decent RAW compression on the fly at anything over 10 frames per second in software.

Why would they? To go "HAHA! We can do it too!" IF they could they would have done it by now. Would bring them more customers.

Canon was never strong on updating their systems with a new firmware. They do not design their systems with any hardware headroom. Minor flaws in programming can be solved with a new firmware but not something severe like you assume. Canon serves a totally different clientel with every camera that costs less then 2.000$. They get bought by everyday people who are not interested in upgrade possibilities. They want to buy a camera and shoot their daughters wedding the next weekend. These people would only be confused by announcements like that. They don't care about aliasing and detail reproduction. Believe me, they don't even see the difference.

Yes, there was a firmware update for the 5D MII that changed the way you could handle things a bit. But it was not like a major concept change.

I don't say that Canon is a bad company. They just serve different needs.

HI

HI

Agree with you more.:undecided:

Agree that this is two different markets but all companies are trying to get more customers from any sector. The reason I think Canon could add Raw is the 7D has two processors and was built for video. I could see them saying when Scarlet is announced "Hey the 7D can shoot raw video now" if not the 7D then the 1D for sure. Even though Canon won't be able to touch Red color science it could steal some customers. I think out of all the companies Canon is more worried than Sony or Panasonic for some strange reason. The 5D has made life a lot more interesting.

Why would they wait? If RED announces anything it's going to be improved frame rates.

Canon KNOWS that RED is going to release a RAW camera. They don't need to wait and see what RED has. If they intend to be competitive then they need to improve pretty dramatically from the currently posted specs.

If Canon really wanted to compete with RED then they have a very long way to go just to get in the same ballpark.

No. Only if it's economical. Canon won't spend money on developing a feature for product that is for normal consumers.

In my opinion, the video feature of the 5D is because "everybody does it now". I do not see that either 5D or 7D were designed for video. Video includes audio. And audio was always bad on any compact camera.

About the new 1D: this thing is like THE professional photo camera. Canon's flagship. You really think they will make it a hybrid-videocamera? Why? The formfactor still needs to be that of a photocamera or the photographers won't like it. They won't make it modular for sure! The 1D basically sells itself as long as they DON'T change too much in the concept.
And do cinematographers want to work with the body of a still camera? I just don't see it.
Different with Epic/Scarlet as you can adjust the look of the camera simply by the modules you choose.

Video includes audio.

Were you around for the first year of RED audio (it didn't work essentially)? Most of the arguments we heard were "pro cameras don't have sound - you'll use a proper dual system sound setup or you're an amateur".

Plus I posted a link in this thread to a little box that solves audio on a 7D. There's even a test posted somewhere out there that shows how clean the box is into the 7D.

It's mostly about the codec at this point. You can buy all the accessories you need to make a 7D work like a little video camera. A lot of those accessories are required for Scarlet too. The question is what does Scarlet really cost for the s35 version ($10k+) and do people really see the system and the codec as $8k better? Or does Scarlet's price change? Now, I think a working pro will absolutely see that Scarlet's system is much nicer but my GUESS is that same person will actually spring for an EPIC.

All I know is WalMart still exists in a monstrously popular way to the chagrin of everyone who loves quality and hates outsourcing of American manufacturing. Apply that to your favorite market. (RED is made in Singapore if I recall correctly)

This is fun! My guess is why they would wait to release raw for video (if they have it) is to steal thunder from RED! DSMC is a huge threat to Canon! espically at the 5D and 1D levels. Its not that the 1D needs video but you had better put it in there because Canon userers can use their glass on a DSMC Scarlet! If you could not use Canon glass then I would say fine Canon is not worried. Scarlet is shaking the market that is one reason Canon put video on the 5D to see what would happen and "bang" it was a hit. RED has put the lid on in order for other companies to keep guessing. Jim knows the quality he has in RED and the features that others will copy as soon as they can.

Believe whatever you want, but the reason Canon put video into the 5D was because the Associated Press - one of their biggest customers - asked them to.

That is certainly true! but they had no idea it would become what it is now. DSMC is here to stay and Canon knows this from the success of the 5D and soon to be massive success of the Scarlet.
