  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Fixed vs. Interchangeable lenses...

After just getting back from a draining 21 hour weekend long Dance competition shoot...this thread is music to my ears.

The whole aspect of getting high res stills from Scarlet would be perfect for the gig I just did..I can't wait. Ahh the possibilities...looking forward to the new work flow updates.

It sounds like I'll want to put two Scarlets on reserve when you start taking money. An enviable place for a businessman to be, your customer begging you to come on and take my money already!

I'm not in the trenches developing the fixed lens so I'll just say that I wish a 16-135mm (s35mm equivalent) was feasible rather than the 28-225mm that it looks to be at this (subject to change) point.

For every time I venture above 135mm I'd probably drop below 28mm a couple dozen times.

But that could just be me.

In S35 cine, it is more like 18-144mm

Jim

I have no problem with the fixed lenses having worked with prosumer cameras all my career. But I need greater zoom than 8x. As was driven home this past weekend at my favorite church to work in the 12x zoom I have now on my panasonic is barely enough to give us a nice closeup of the B&G when we are banished to the balcony to shoot.

There is no question that everyone will want SOMETHING more from Scarlet. But if you look at the whole package, especially the size and price, we think this is an incredible combination.

BTW, it is MUCH easier to make a long zoom ratio for a small sensor. No doubt your 12X zoom is on a 1/3" sensor.

If the lens on Scarlet is really 18-144mm, I'd be a very happy camper! That seems like the best range for indie filmmaking. For anything wider or longer, we can always add adapters in front.

Plus, as Agwah mentioned above, no need to clean the sensor.

Thanks for the info, Jim!

Scarlet works for me. The wildlife footage I get with it will pay for it's big brother.

My eyes are not what they use to be. Auto focus is good for run and gun. I like that scarlet is small.

I feel like scarlet was made just for me. No bitchen from me. I was not happy with 5 SLR camera bodies, why would just one video camera be any different. There are many different needs and shooting conditions which require different gear.

Good Job Jim and Red

Greg

PS I got married last week and she is excited about getting some new photo and video gear

You'll hear no argument over price and such from me. It's just that there are about 3 issues in the event industry that make or break a camera. Zoom is one of them. I'd love to see Red give the EX1 and Z7U a run for their money being they are right now the "it" cameras of the industry.

I'll be honest, the engineering conversations go over my head. But can I assume that the greater the zoom capability the large a lense needs to be with larger senors?

Thanks for your response, Jim.

What I still don't get is why you can't offer the scarlet with everything you just mentioned Jim, but... make this amazing super duper wide, superman vision tele, mario andretti fast lens remooooovableeee. Then you could sell the Scarlet to all those damn wealthy soccer dads AND please the more hardcore users. If the stock scarlet lens does everything they need then more power to them. If it doesn't... then you at least have options.

Who cares if Nikon/Canon lenses aren't designed for this size sensor. They will work and they will make a LOT of people happy. Think about this for more than a second. Full frame glass on a 1.6x crop camera works pretty good right? I think so. I shoot with that combo every day. Now think of all that full frame or better yet... APS-C sized glass that we could use. Sure it would have a little crop... but is that the end of the world? I don't think so. I would rather have the option "on top" of scarlets amazing stocker.

I'll stick my neck out on a limb here and dare you to just test out some nikon/canon glass on an alpha scarlet. Tell us what you think.

I remember you saying there were no lenses that would be wide enough. So I was browsing around a bit on B&H and Sigma makes a 4.5mm fisheye, 180deg FOV that's designed for a APS-C sensor. If that's cropped a bit (someone help me here and do a little math, what is the size difference between a 2/3" and an APS-C sensor? And crop factor?) it's still pretty damn wide imo.

For anything wider or longer, we can always add adapters in front.
Oh hello blurry CA. Nice to meet you.

I like what I'm hearing so far on the lens for Scarlet.
Getting a chance to see Jim elaborate on some of the specifics for the lens should help provide reassurance and maintain positive momentum in the upcoming months.
Can't wait to hear and see more from Scarlet.

Even with everything I said in my previous post Jim (I'm not really bitching I promise)... I sincerely thank you for this camera. Whatever the specs.

hey Jim, it all sounds good. Your camera will serve a HUGE market, you'll still get the odd whiner so just ignore it. Scarlet is a breakthrough for all of us filmmakers and we thank you for that.

Scarlet is revolution, and if anyone finds a 3k camera for that price, let us know.
Gonna be exciting and the cash is waiting.

Jim, you do give us reasons to push ahead. Thank you sir.

Scarlet is going to be huge as it stands now, that is for sure. Good thing is whoever doesn’t like it have the right not to buy it! That’s democracy. At least in our good old U.S. of A.!

just to lay some of the questions to rest... where is the scarlet lens starting at? is it S35 18-144mm or 28-224mm? Or somewhere else? The statement that it'll have 8x is for me pointless if I don't have any bearing where those x starts...

I'm hoping the X start's at 18mm since that would give me every focal length I would ever use. But that may just be me...

Guys:

If you don't like the specs, Scarlet ain't for you. They're still going to sell them by the thousands for all the people who've never had anything even close to it.

Jim:

I'm a RED ONE owner (well, eventually... :P ) and I will be buying a Scarlet. I get what you're doing and I think it's phenomenal. Do your thing.

Sounds like it would start at the equivalent of an 18mm for S35, i.e. around a 7mm to 8mm for 2/3" sensors.

Sounds good Jim. Scarlet should be a nice little toy for vacation/home video stuff and work well for location scouts and such.

.

I wish that would end up being the case too as I have no trouble getting my hands on 16/s16mm glass. But I think part of the reason must be camera size. If it's a fixed stock lens you can have most of the lens inside the camera. This greatly reduces the overall footprint of the machine.
