Obviously Mysterium-X upgrade for RED1 is coming up soon as possible and it has the first priority before any Epic (or Scarlet) ship.

Hey Sanjin your talking about two different things here.. well three if you count your assumed priority list. Can you be more specific on what you mean? The Asic and the upgrade really are two different things.. Maybe you are talking sensors?

Jarred, probably you are right and I was talking sensors.

I hope that first to upgrade of R1 to M-X is a good idea because of opportunity in a large scale of R1 users to "test" new sensor just because Epic is totally another camera than R1 anyway...

My idea was to first give the new sensor to "improve" sensitivity, exposure latitude, DR, new sensor size workflow,...etc... at those large scale users testing... because new camera hardware probably needs more time to get perfect before shipping...

Yes the Sensors are done.. we have been testing the M-X upgrade for the R1 camera in the field for a month or so now... Just tweaking the knobs to make sure everything works :)

MX Upgrade still doesn't take away from trade-in policy if you can keep old faithful and get Epic X?

Quotes from EPIC Upgrade FAQs by Big Jon, Straight Shooter, RED Digital Cinema, jon@red.com:

"2. Keep your RED ONE and upgrade your sensor to Mysterium-X for $4500.

I understand that the RED ONE owner has the option of upgrading his/her sensor to Mysterium-X and that the charge is $4500.

Can a modified RED ONE with Mysterium-X modification be used to upgrade to an EPIC X?

Yes, the Mysterium-X upgrade does not preclude upgrading to an EPIC camera at a later date."

Jarred, I'm assisting a buddy with buying a RED one-
we have a project on the horizon. Perhaps we can hold off
till the upgrade, but if we purchase before the upgrade, is it
just a matter of returning the body for upgrading? Cost?

What's the upside of this upgrade? this seems to have slipped under my radar.

Thanks

OK, I found the Snowflake post, that pretty much answers it. Was asleep at the wheel, didn't make the connection. Thanks.

I know there are no dates, but how is the M-X update going to compare to the EPIC-X upgrade for RED One owners? In other words, I'm guessing it doesn't make sense to upgrade the RED One if we are going to do the EPIC-X upgrade, right?

Last I heard- R1 will not ship with the MX sensor as the default sensor, even after it,s released. I,m guessing you would have to pay for the R1 and then the $4.5k additionally if you want to ship out initially in that form. But, you know the saying around here... "subject to change" and all that.

Jim posted yesterday that although you CAN upgrade the RED ONE, the technological limits of the RED ONE guts can not give you the framerates of the EPIC.

I hope RED puts priority on the EPIC-X, so I don´t have to go through the hassel of upgrading my RED ONE for what becomes a month or two´s use... (before I send it in and before the Epic-X ships)

My guess at this point: Steve Gibby, OffHollywood and their kind get their epic-X´s around january 2010... RED start ramping up in march 2010... then Scarlet will follow.

Yeah, sounds right, thanks Raul.

DROOL!

Please, as soon as it is possible, and wise to do so, let us know if you plan to release it before Epic-X, and if so a rough ETA and initial production numbers. Petty please.

I could really use that information!

I totally see your point and I agree that it will be the best scenario for most. However, for a few like OffHollywood it might be cool to have the upgrade in a pair of cameras. For me it would be sweet to have the option to rent a pair with the added dynamic range for snow in Feb if Epic-X is not out. I want what's best for the guys that partially funded the start of Red, but if it isn't hard it would be nice to see the sensor first. I would assume that running the sensor on Red One would be a great way to test the sensor itself and there would be very little stability issues associated with a different aspect ratio with the same number of total pixels.

dont worry guys we will make everything clear soon... watching the speculation is fun though!

Disagree totally, would rather see Mysterium X go to Epic X so we can move to the new platform as soon as possible.

Michael,

a new camera is always about new sensor.

When Epic-X modular design improves usability the most people would jump there anyway.

What the most people want now is the new sensor that gives one stop+ higher sensitivity.

Not all people need more fps (if you need it go Phantom HD Gold, Weisscam, etc,...).

Arri, they "play" with new cameras at "classic" speed up to 60 fps but they talk more about higher sensitivity of its new sensor (also optical viewfinder as one of the options together with EVF).

As we know RED "lost" some jobs before just because of lower sensitivity of Mysterium sensor.

At the end it's not about new platform it's more about new sensor.

So why I shouldn't ask for that new sensor upgrade just because I have RED camera already.

To pay US$4,500 is still more attractive then US$17,500 (credit towards the purchase of an EPIC X S35 Private Reserve package, which is only available to RED ONE customers).

Also it's more ecological, practical and cheaper.

I agree with you Sanjin, the sensor is king. But the $$$ is also important. We'll have to wait and see if there is a credit from the upgrade towards Epic-X. Just as sensitivity is important, reliability is an other factor that may have dissuaded many from approving Red though. I'd say it may be worth the wait and keep things simple till you guys can get it all at once. That is from an owner's POV (which I am not).

But from a producer's POV they only care about their own schedule and screw the owners. Is it available and how much is the rental.

I am curious to see if Red decided to make the Red One upgrade batch identical to Epic-X's sensor and work on the way to allow for them to drop right in and work with the area of the sensor that has the resolution that the Red One can handle. That way less design, less manufacturing, less trashed sensors... it would only make sense. You might see a very high percentage of the $4,000 upgrade being honored on top of your $17,500 credit.

Hi Sanjin,

For the few who voided their warranties you may be right, most will prefer the new cameras, for quicker start up times, better battery performance, less compression & the lower price of Scarlet to name a few.
