  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-X at IBC...

Here is a top down view of Epic vs. R1 to answer some of your sizing questions.. on the Epic there is a Redmote attached that obviously can be removed.

Wow, well done on the size reduction and re-packaging. As I like to say, the second time you design something is almost always better than the first. You learn so much with each iteration.

Looks very slick, and I like that it's smaller - BUT
It does make me more averse to using heavier lenses and zooms (yes, ahem, like the RPP's) with it since the center of gravity shifts significantly forward makes it harder to balance the camera. What would you do for counterweight if using a RPPs + Arri MB + Brow, follow focus, etc. ? More Battery modules??

Get a tripod mount for the lens instead of the camera!

Unfortunately most lenses, like MPs, do not have provision for a mount or even lens support. But, I'm not complaining. Small is good.

On the other hand, using huge lenses will be a breeze because the camera won't need any support.

Comparing to the original EVF, that's what I call design advance wow.

That old thing is like a can!

I agree although I don't like too small cameras, the lighter, the less attention you give your shots, the advance ov DV like cameras transformed films into too many shots "just to cover your ass and work it out in the edit" instead of thinking ahead of well installed shots that makes sense and tell a story...

Any word on SD output

If I remember Jim correctly at IBC, no SD output, as he said "this is an HD camera, people (steadicamers) we love ya guys, but they're gonna have to get there"...

In short, it's HD times, we're moving forward, no going backwards with Epic...

But there's SD transcoders for 500$ for those who want/need one...

Can I put in a last second request for updating the plastic eycup in the new viewfinder so it can hold an Eypiece Chamois for longer than two set ups?

Gee you've got to give me your technique!!! Mine flies off every time I peak in there... Even with gaffer, the EVF is like a Chamois-proof device! It just doesn't want it!!!

EDIT: I found gaffing it to my face much more efficient! But then you have to live with looking stupid on set...

I'm sure Jim has the manufacturing facilities to make a ton of RED BOMB CHAMOIS.

Given what we pay for a single eyepiece chamois now - $5-$6 (http://www.filmtools.com/eychamsmal.html) - and how many you go through on a single feature - I think it's a GREAT idea.

Yeah, I can see this already, an aluminum chiseled chamois, with a special update program to have it molded on your face... I bet ET is already working on the "Red Bomb Chamois" mount, the tears guard cover and the Parkingson's shock proof support... Oh hang on, it's on Abelcine's website already...

Video of the day...

new PRO-RES light codec quicktime.. right click and save as. Windows guys are gonna need to install the prores playback codec.

This is not a render, and it is 2:4:1 aspect, what do you guys shoot stuff with Epix, Scarlet or R1?

I guess when not holding cameras you guy put a bowl of fruit on the turntable?

Remember the original Frankie watch shot as shown at the first IBC RED attended? That's the turntable for you! Great to see it in use again for product shots.

And I'll point out that the Epic includes the adjustble sensor backfocus mecahnism INSIDE the body!

Great shot Jarred.

Jarred,

I think it is interesting the the top of the Epic gets so hot there is a caution warning about it. Does it get hotter than R1?

Dusty

THEY may not know the actual temperature until the ASICs get done.

The epic is looking really sweet (figured I'd bump the photo to the end of the thread)

A few questions:

1) Is the height of the optical center the same as RED or can you tell us what it is?

2) Does the EVF connector/CF module on the left side come off? I'm wondering if the camera can be configured with that off or on the right side for doing side by side 3D shooting?

3) This is a combined epic/RED question: Is there any way of doing behind the lens filtering? On my RED it looks like I can put a stepping filter ring in there and screw on a filter and still have clearance for many/most lenses. Other than being sure that the lenses don't hit the filter, what other concerns should I know about? Any warranty issues?

2) Yes it can be (Someone posted that it could be done for 3D shooting as what was said at IBC)

Yes.

Time for a FAQ?
