  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is it true?

Did you check the link, Jonathan? Were you there? I am specifically asking those that were there. Thanks.

there is no working camera...even Jannard and Jarred stated that it won't have its chip in yet as they haven't come in...
Epic-X was the only one that was there because thats one of the first cams to be released and its probably the first finished polished prototype they've done..

Yep, just another confirm: Epic-X, not working. Bomb evf (working), some modules.
No Scarlet.

AND they are ready to ship... They're just waiting for the ASIC...

I thought they weren't going to ship till after a large amount of tests were done...
The body is ready to ship but the Epic-X itself isn't I thought?

Something like:

internal tests

small group

tweaks

release

or did I get that wrong?

No offence, but that makes you sound a bit like a jerk... Jim stated many times before and during the show that they only had a non-working Epic-X prototype there. So there's no need to get all aggressive...

I really wasn't being aggressive. Must have typed to quickly. I wasn't being smart at all, just legitimately asking. That's the problem with nonverbal communication. I post a lot at Scarletuser and a bit here too, so I'm up to speed on it being Epic X. I read every post by Jim and Jarred. That's why I was taken aback when I saw the DVXuser thread. So thought I would ask the people that were there to confirm. No aggression here, stephen.

Thanks for all the replies, everyone. The poster at DVXuser, as I suspected, was confused.

Not true. After they get the ASIC they can begin the full QA process, hopefully the ASIC is perfect and they dont need to go back and spin a new one. Not doubting Red at all, just making statements about product development and ASICs.

after the complexity post today I think we'll see footage and small bits from Epic-X during christmas but not shipping till 2010...RED would be running on rocket fuel if they could spit these things out this year! Given...3 months a lot can happen and change so maybe...

Even if the first batch of asics worked, there would still be a long period of internal testing and firmware fixes. I think we will see the first Epics/Scarlet s35's around Christmas or early January. PURE SPECULATION on my part though. With the nature of ASIC's though, there won't be the continuous major firmware updates though. The RED One does not use an asic and can be updated and changed infinitely if RED so desired, within hardware limitations of course. Once Epic and Scarlet are out, they should be fully featured and production ready.

I don't know, if they release the Scarlet (especially the fixed lens Scarlet) sometime around the beginning of 2nd quarter next year, it might be a tad bit late. That's almost time for another "half-generation" of vDSLRs to be released, no doubt leap frogging the current gen. If the rumors in the "Other Cameras" forum are true about Canon's bid to enter the RAW sector perhaps as soon as within the month, well, a Scarlet might seem kind of long in the tooth for some potential Red customers by the time its released, including me.

For the record, yes, I for one would be willing to deal with minor bugs if it gets me a Scarlet quicker, for the main reason that my current camera will depreciate even more by the time the Scarlet is released and I will have to pay maybe $2K out of my pocket to switch over rather than $1K or so I was expecting. Hopefully any bugs would be fixed by the great firmware releases Red seems to put out.
