I had the same reaction as Zak. Sit back and enjoy watching the lens bubble pop.

Red Primes @ $19,000 vs Super Speeds @ $53,000 ?
Duclos/ PL / Tokina 11-16 @ $2995 vs Zeiss 12mm and 14mm @ $21,500 ( for both ) ?

Seriously. The new lenses are MUCH better.

I hope that most of that glass is on consignment.... prices for Old 1980's and 1990's glass is about to hit a steep downward slope.

Hi Tim,

Looks like the Japenise rehousing. Ken Stone has sold many lenses with Zeiss & Olympus glass that look very like that.

I agree with you in this regard - from your POV which I share. It's just you don't represent the avarage buyer. If so, you would not have initiated the Duclos 11-16 Tokina PL modification.

Firstly, you have to take in account that RPPs still dont have an 18mm. We all agree that this a big gap, for many a dealbreaker. Secondly RPPs are not super fast. If you want super fast primes you either buy MPs or Elites or Zeiss SuperSpeeds. If your take the prices of MPs in account and T1.3 is a must an used but well mantained set of SuperSpeeds is a valid option. For some reason the russian glas never really took off.
Thirdly, although RPPs are unquestionable a bargain you don't know how they perform on the long run (serviceability, etc...), you know that with Cooke, Zeiss and Angenieux. Last but not least most DPs are very conservative. They love to stick to the tools they know. Especially if they have to switch to an unknown, new digital camera system.
Additionally the reputation of Zeiss, Cooke and Angenieux is founding on high long-term quality. It will take some time and work for contenders to achieve that. This mixture of soft and hard facts plus the high demand still keeps the prices high. A set of pristine MKIII SuperSpeeds will find a buyer and they are still ready to pay more than 45k. It's an easy equation. I rent out a set of MKIII SuperSpeeds for for 200k per day. I do that 7 days a months, meaning 200 x 7 x 12 which results in roughly 15K in a year. If you substract that off the 50.000 USD you'll be in the realm of 35k. Here I suppose the "real" price of a set of MKIII SuperSpeeds will settle down. We know that the calculation above is not for private owners who rarely rent out their camera package but it works well for rental houses which are in the market for a prime set with the necessary demand.

Assuming the 18mm RPP is available, the lenses had their first services/repairs and all is to perfect satisfaction then we are talking. But this will take at least another year. Enough time for the set of MKIII SuperSpeeds to make a meaningful ROI happen.

I do alot of handheld. I bailed on the chance for RPP's for two reasons: weight/size and no 18mm. The latter being the dealbreaker for me. One day RED will have an 18mm, but between now and then I would've been one of the masses in NYC scrambling to subrent an 18mm. I see it getting ugly as rental houses will give priority to anyone renting the full set instead of those wanting just the 18.

The size factor is a big deal if the camera's on your shoulder alot.

I patiently wait to see what Illumina as up their sleeve.

Regarding the conservatism of DP's, I don't quite buy it or this site wouldn't exist. If something's better and cheaper, DP's jump on it like locusts. Look at Kinos, HMI's, RED.
