  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

OK... REDCINE-X time.

Hey Todd that is on the list. One thing to note as well is the new alpha gets installed as a different name in your applications folder ( with the build number on the end ) so if you made a shortcut to Alpha 1, Alpha 2 will not overwrite it so you need to make a new shortcut.

Jarred,
Hey, i just now noticed something that freaked me out. Here's the situation:

1. Two weeks ago shot some u/w footage
2. Last week loaded footage to Redcine v. 20.1.3
a. made my selcts
b. color correction
c. saved all data as .rcn files so that i could go back later and make any changes etc....

**NOW
I recently changed the name of the folder that I had orginally saved the name of the R3d files from something like
"MDC footage" to "Bay footage"
**no big deal i thought...because when i go to open the .rcn file it SHOULD ask me what folder is it in if i change the name...or can't be found---relink it right?

Well....first i went to REDCINE X to see if I could to a file-open AND then open that .rcn file to work on it within REDCINE X, but that does not appear to be available now. So i went back to REDCINE 20.1.3....and opened the saved .rcn file....nothing comes up--only the BLUE (blank) frames. Redcine does not ask me what NEW folder the R3D files are located in . Only by chance did i remember what the file name was....and after a few tries i got it to link up the footage. SO, is this something that can be addressed. I CONSTANTLY change file folder names for footage and would hate for the saved .rcn file not to link up with it....I did not see where i could re-link the footage...so hopeully i am not writing this for nothing. Would like to see it in RC X if possible.
thanks,

PART 2

PART 2

So, now the case is that i want to copy over these R3D files to a portable drive and the .rcn file as well so that i can send them to my stock agency and they have access to all of my color correction and in/out selections.

HOW can i do this if the original .rcn file points to a completely different folder and subfolders? Or can i do something else using build 20.1.3?

Thanks

For those of us without 30" monitors, could we have a quick key to show image only on the viewer window so we can see the image without the play tools and such?

I like the expanding thumbnails to show metadata, but could we toggle that effect on and off so that it doesn't overlap other clips in the bin as well as making it easier to shift select multiple clips.

The interface is great. The simplicity of Red Alert with the power of Redcine. I can't wait to see plugins for scopes and additional CC controls.

Just started to play with this, Nice work guys!

First couple thoughts:

The scrubber at the bottom of the footage window should scale to almost the full width of the window, to increase accuracy.

When rendering a timeline with multiple clips individual file names would be nice (#f in redcine)

AN "add all" to timeline button in the footage browser would be nice.

Also my renders are coming out a little soft and "uprezzed" looking I think this has been mentioned. Not sure why or if it's just because it's an Alpha and you want to keep it out of production work.

Yes Mike the scaling should be in the next alpha hopefully.. I like the Add All idea... good work.

They are still tweaking the scaling algorithms.. plus Snow Leopard has a couple H.264 flags that can mess with the gamma.. its not perfect yet which is exactly why you don't want to use this for production work.

Jarred,

I think H.264 in pre-snow leopard had the multiplying gamma from 1.8 to 2.2 automatically, so probably inheriting that? Maybe you should let Apple know rather than fixing it on your side.

But, geee, I was thinking since REDCINE-X is free, it won't be full featured app. but if you are realizing all the things that people are suggesting, it will be full fledge app.. How would the third parties react to this? I'm thankful, but just concerned.

Kinda Kaku.. but yes, its an Apple Fix not a RED fix.. all we can do is wait. Its not just a REDCINE-X thing it happens in After Effects etc..

As a stop gap I have been using the Elgato Turbo H.264 encoder to make H.264's with the proper gamma ( usually from PRORES output)... That little USB Hardware encoder is one of those little badass bits of kit that for some reason doesn't get the recognition it deserves..

Elgato would have been more popular if it could to wider range of format support I think. Matrox is trying to break the wall with CompressHD.

Since everybody is mentioning the wish list here, I'd do that, too. Please include monitor calibration scheme in REDCINE-X for both desktop and the REDROCKET output.

Great to know as it's less than $90. LINK

Thanks for sharing

The turbo KILLS the Matrox CompressHD.. I have both and Elgato not only is faster, it has slowly increased formats over the last 12 months.... for everything 1080p and below its pretty hard to beat. And you can walk into any Apple store and buy one.

I was really excited about the CompressHD when it came out.. but I was left disappointed. Hopefully they will improve things with Driver support.

CompressHD should be faster but Matrox has to get on that if you have the impression or facts, thanks for your information. Elgato is certainly easier to access.

Yes Mike the scaling should be in the next alpha hopefully..

Sounds good.

Here's an idea for Timeline scaling that I really liked when I've seen it implemented before. How about if you drag the mouse left and right on the on the Timeline's bottom bar, it Scrolls Back and Forth (like it does now), but if you drag up and down, it Zooms in and Out?

Also, if you were to do a combined drag, such as Up and Left, it would Scroll Left and Zoom in and the same time, etc...

I like that Casey.. but how about when you are on that bar and you scroll your mouse wheel up or down it scales in and out?

Yes, that would be cool too.

The thing I like about the former is that it is all one motion, plus the scroll wheel is many times reserved for up/down scroll (not everyone will have a supermouse), incase you would ever want that ability for the Timeline Window, as it could expand in the future...

You'd really have to try this out to see how great it is. It's pretty cool when in action. I can send you an old demo video which shows it being used briefly on an NLE. Also, I'll look for a way where you can try it out, if you are interested.

cool send me the vid to my email address thx.

Sorry, Found it.

this has probably been asked, but will there be a pc version any time soon?

scott.
