  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The running rig update

http://www.the-running-rig.com/news.htm

27-5-09 After calculating prototyping and costs for the RR-1 we have desided to not produce it because of high cost of manufacturing that will take its price very high in a price range that you can get a reasonable steadicam device for your cam, as you can find loads of them in the market today and with very atractive features and prices. The good news is that the HR-1 which is a shoulder hand held rig is almost done and its close to production. We believe that this is a very usefull tool for hand held shooting offering many new ways to shoot your project in a very affordable price.Soon......

I think this looks like an impressive unit. If the spring support doesnt interfere with the movement, and it can support the weight of the Red One, I'd be first in line. Can it be held and panned with one hand, leaving the other hand free to adjust focus? If not, could some sort of centered handle be devised?

How do you control which direction the camera will spin though? If you want to pan left to follow someone but the camera moves in a counter direction...wouldn't that be inhibiting a lot of the time? I can see it being useful for lots but then it can make operating more difficult? I love the idea.

Hi,

I really see your point but where is the spring located?, I cant seem to see it. This is top notch progress. Have you tried jumps with it? How much will the spring handle? Steady arms can handle a lot but of course the weight and size makes those kinds of moves impossible. This is a really good direction. I'm very very excited to hear more... By loosing a parallelogram, you loose horizontal balance yea? wondering why you chose to abandon it? I suppose if you had sensors talking to your your tilt motor, you could really pull out some cool moves. Must have a really strong motor for red and not noisy too.

If i am passing through greece can i come and have a look? Will bring my red.

Ok have ur address. I was thinking back loaded springs were the way to go with these smaller cams and was working on it myself... But maybe you have saved me the time?

I don't think those dates fit with me at the moment... the 11th is earliest. Will email you for another suitable time?

In any case i will be keeping a sharp eye on this progress.

Hello Andrew. The spring loaded back support system is there not only to help taking all of the weight of the camera and HR-1tm of your arms but also stabilise vibrations that are created of you walking .It kinds of work in the same way as a steadicam arm does.
I will keep you updated for all tests that will take place with the red set up.
The HR-1tm works best withremote FFocus units so you dont have to worry about operating and FF pulling at the same time. But Because in the real world a lot of ops want to pull their own focus the way to do this either go with a remote ff unit and mound the controller on one handle , and control the pan action with the other handle. Now if you to place a cable driven FF unit it will has to be rooted so that it doesnt interfear with the pan action to a degree that you can rotate 270 degrees. That is possible also.
With the spring back mount its possible to operate one handed as long as the total rig is balanced close to CGs.
It takes a lot of explaining how to do this and I will procced to that when tests are completed with the red.
Please take a minute and send me an email at
Constantine@the-running-rig.com so I can keep you in line for all updates.
Thank you very much for your inerest on the HR-1tm Andrew.

Sounds great - Just sent you an email.

Well now I guess I need to REALLY cross my fingers that the viewfactor charade works its self out. I need a wireless FF!

What if there was some kind of shock absorption on the shoulder to camera section?

My problem with this rig is the bouncy up and down movement when walking. This footage would all need to be stabilized (which may be standard practice soon) to pass my quality test.

Is there a way to dampen the vertical forces of walking with some kind of springs or air shocks?

The Red is great for stabilizing in post because of so much excess resolution, so I'm not worried too much, but I guess it is a pain to do it all the time, and results would be superior if you don't have to.

Those videos were done without the stabilizing spring. Im sure Konstantin will upload some more videos when the spring apparatus is tested and constructed.

Updates on the www.the-running-rig.com with INTRODUCTORY PRICE and PRICE OFFER of the HR-1.
All of the components analytically.
thanks for your interest and your possitive comments. Will update with pictures of the components seperatly in the next few days.

Hello guys.
I have uploaded a new video which is a compination of a follow through some narrow alley with uneven stairs and curves all the way to a small church yard which ends up with a 360 around the subject, then a small move ffward to the last frame. There is no image stabilization, the lens is not a wide lense as you will notice , the camera weight is 8 kgr, and it required 2 kilos os batteries at the back of the HR-1 as counter weights and at a distance of 35cm from the center of th shoulder pad and back.
Please tell me your comments about this shot .

its the first video titled follow up and 360 circular move
Thank you all

Great video. So this was all done without the stabilizing spring? How is that coming along, by the way?

Hello . just for History I have added a new section in my website with past projects under PROJECTS from aerial remote heads, aerial blimps, to camera crane and remote head. A lot more will be added as soon as I organize all of my past photos and videos. Thank you all.

Thank you very much Jason , and I emailed you with all info about the HR-1 RIG.
Are you using a RED ONE?
If so some additional info for you here.
You will need to get extension cables for the red drive and the battery module from Red which can all together be mounted at the back of the HR-1 and can be used as counter weights. this way you can achieeve all possible rotations.

PS we can have a long talk through SKYPE if you wish just state day and time, thanks
