I Find myself looking at the Canon 7D thinking that For 1700 bucks--- 1080p, 60 at 720p--- It's not a bad deal. Better cine quality than an $8000 XLH1

I really want to wait for the Scarlet, But maybe there is room in my life for BOTH... I said it Both.
As much as I think the idea of an all around solution for stills and Movie is awsome, DSLR's are pretty light, and shoot very acceptable video, as an extra.

I guess the redundancy of having both is well.... Redundant. But one of them is here. (almost) That is Very tempting.
I am also curious.... have there been any posts about the use of a 4mp sensor camera for a still camera...( the 2/3rds sensor Scarlet was 4mp in the literature at some point? Right ) the eng cams are around 2point something MP's?
Does anyone still have a 4mp Digital camera they use? Besides their brand new Picture phone.
The Canon is an 18mp camera...
Don't get me wrong. I'm not comparing the two so critically.
But if I made a movie with a 1080p Camera it wouldn't look bad up on the bigscreen.

I'm not trying to get at anything specific but it's something to think about.

Yeah, the Crop is Crap.

Would zooming in on a Fisheye Zoom 10-16mm have a acceptable effect for a wide lense? Obviously the glass is not as premium as it could be on a lens like that but does it work?

The sensor is about as big as a red one, with very similar crop factors when compared to ff35mm sensors. You have to be just as aware of the lens choice as you are when shooting red. There are "ultrawide" options for such sensors, this whole forum seems to be in love with the tokina 11-16mm f2.8, there's the canon 10-20mm(which unfortunately in my opinion feels like a cheap child's toy made in china out of soft plastic) and more. Not cinema grade stuff by far, but it's doable.

As a 5D Mark II owner I'm kinda pissed that Canon didn't just give us a 24p firmware update... No wonder I like RED!

The difference between the 5D and the 7D is that the 7D isn't a full frame sensor. This is an issue when putting on wide glass.

The 7D is classified as a 1.6x "smaller-than 35mm" sensor.

15mm FF glass would be 24mm on the 7D.. which I guess is fine but you have to know that a head of time.

It's like shooting 2k on your Red. You can't find a Wide angle lens wide enough unless you shoot with 16mm glass.

Rumor is that Canon will be releasing a firmware upgrade for the 5D for 24/25p

Red is about the same size as a 1.6 crop sensor and is actually quite a bit better for video than a FF (at least for focus and low light work)

If the 7D will take a PL mount adapter which it seems it will then it is a bargain especially for projects that do not need all the resolution of a RED.

The downfall of these "video" DSLR's is the codec at the moment but rumor is that Nikon is working on a RAW video codec so that may change.

It records h264 video. I'm sure it will look super on a website.

This is just wrong. First of all, the APS-C 1.6 crop size sensor is almost identical to RED/S35 so it's like shooting 4k with the RED. Second, their are numerous super wides available for the APS-C/EF-S sensor. Canon has had the 10-22 for several years as has Tokina with the 11-16 f2.8 , and Sigma has a 10-20 f3.5. These are all very good rectilinear lenses. There are also even wider fisheyes available from Sigma - a 4.5mm 180 degree circular fisheye on APS-c and a 10mm 167 degree fisheye that fills the APS-C sensor.

What more could you need?

Keep in mind that the crop factor is only relative to FF35 sensor dimensions. Those who don't shoot FF35 won't see the relevance or the point to referencing a crop factor. Also focal length is focal length, doesn't matter what format the lens is designed for. The APS-C sensor in the 7D is very similar in size to the RED One sensor or S35 format. 15mm on the 7D will give you about the same FOV that a 15mm lens would on any other APS-C camera or about the same as what 15mm gives you on the RED One. ...A 15mm lens designed to cover a full frame sensor is no wider than a 15mm APS-C or S35 lens, it just provides a larger imaging circle or coverage area.

...Ooops, Michael beat me to it.

And I agree with Ace. That video looks like crap.

It's not just shot badly. I took the clip to After Effects and raised gamma just a bit. Look at what the codec is doing in the circled area:
