  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDCINE-X

Coming soon to desktop screen near you...

I think they are holding it for Snow Leopard launch and probably they may open tomorrow.

I'll be surprised if RED comes out with REDCINE-X as 64-bit app. I don't think the release delay is related to Snow Leoard, Jarred clearly mentioned that there are few stubborn bugs that they want to get rid of before they release it.

This is Red's biggest drawback. They're almost Mac-only developpers, forgetting a lot about the post-production process. All the useful apps are Mac-only and for someone who loves Red but only work with PCs (sorry, like 90% of the people, even in the so called hype business of cinema) I feel abandonned.

Err... the notion that the Mac only represents 10% of post production seems a little hard to believe from where I'm sitting. From what we encounter it's more like an 80-20 or 70-30 split in favor of the Mac. If Red needs to favor one platform over the other for pragmatic reasons, favoring the Mac seems to make sense. Especially because there are many fewer configurations that need to be supported, which makes testing a lot easier.

Currently, the only option you have on PC is to load your dailies in Adobe's Premiere. I'm sorry but Redcine is far too buggy, just try to load 30min of dailies and you'll see. It's quite obvious that this app has been ported from Mac to PC and not developped from the ground for Windows...

I think it's pretty well established that the current version of RedCine is actually a sort of "SCRATCH Lite", so this isn't quite the case. It seems to be more of an OS X app written using code from a Windows app and then ported back to Windows. It certainly doesn't follow any OS X interface conventions or run in a particularly bug free way on OS X.

Red's decision to replace RedCine with a new app written fully in-house will probably improve quality on both platforms.

especially because eSata is another standard which is lacking for Mac...

Huh? Apple doesn't include eSATA on its logic boards at the moment, but it's hardly difficult to find Mac-compatable eSATA or SAS cards.

Heh heh heh.. Can we talk about Snow Leopard yet?

Let's see how tonights build looks..

Another long Friday night to party...?!?! I am so ready for it!!!:biggrinjester:

Yes you can, hih hih hih.

I already made the thread in the apple workflow.

I have a great expectation on your "heh heh heh".

Oh, tell them to take a nap if the get stuck.

If the build looks good and if it gets released, I can make some more hype at Adobe Japan presentation on the September 4th. Over one hundred people are expected to attend. I'm taking my Mac Pro with RED ROCKET to show of the realtime playback and the fast conversion, so users can expect what happens in Premiere Pro in the future.

Kaku if the build comes out of the oven healthy.. it will still be very Alpha... It still has awhile to go to be as slick as the demo video with flipping menu's etc.

Any parallels between Quciktime X streaming and RedRay?

Thanks for letting me know Jarred.

Then I will concentrate showing the ROCKETcine-X maybe.

He he Jarred, thanks for the answer... yes, it was a little bit of provocation from me, Jim doesn't have the monopole, does he ? :ciappa:

Again, it's not really a question of Mac vs Windows, I think it's great for Mac users that all these Red apps exist, not to mention for free...

I just feeel a little disappointed that there dosen't seem to be a real global vision of the Windows development in general for the R3D files. It doesn't only concern Red, but for instance I don't understand why so many third-party developpers offer transcoding solutions for Mac which already exist for free (ok, with some extra work but it's worth the savings imho) whereas on the Windows platform they could just release a dailies viewer/r3d batch converter to make some easy money like you said... Sure Scratch Cine is probably a great tool, but I'm not rich enough !

Well, time will tell if Redcine-X (PC version...) will hold its promises !

Anyway, I just want to point out that Red offered me the possibility of making the pictures I wouldn't be able to afford otherwise, and meeting great people through Reduser !

No worries Jean.. life would be pretty boring without a little provocation now and then :)

If you hear a knock at your door this morning and see some burly men standing outside, don't answer it.

Actually, we put alot of effort into windows development (and linux).
All our new applications (SDK, ROCKETcineX, REDcineX, new REDline, etc) are all designed from the ground up on Windows and Mac. The only difference is we release on mac first in order to not grind development to a halt simultaneous releases.

Buggy alpha or not, we're all still itching to try it!

That's always such a double edge sword as no matter what we say, people forget really fast that it's an alpha and start ripping into it :)

Tonights build is due in about an hour and a half.. I'll see how it turns out.

YAY! :D I personally promise not to criticize this build in any capacity (as long as my computer still functions after opening it)

Can't you send me the Red Milk Girls instead ? Or the one featured on Landmine.tv ? By the way, the proof that Redcine is very buggy : I was never able to see the girl hidden everybody talked about. I just hope that the one on the next Windows version will have bigger advantages that the one on the Mac version.

Don't rush it! There is no use in having access to a program that doesn't function properly. When it's running well set it loose otherwise you'll just be bombarded with bug reports your already aware of and have to listen to anctious nellies wondering when they will get a new build to fix all of them. Seems pointless. We appreciate your efforts and will appreciate them more when everything works great. Probably not the popular vote around here but I think it makes sense for everyone.
