  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New CF cards coming soon?

PLEASE< PLEASE< PLEASE add a protect button much like the SD cards which won't allow a delete/format option?

P2 did it right with that and it would be a valuable option for Red Techs who are dealing with 20+ CF cards and or hard-drives. I'm using a marked "exposed" plastic bin for CF or HDD overflow. THEY ALL LOOK THE SAME without Marking tape.

I'm sure the 32gb will have a new module much like the 16Gb cards did.

Can't wait!

I have griped a little bit about the closed nature of the REDONE...
....

I can understand your perspective Michael on the cards, but the closed nature of the REDONE is something I really don't understand, maybe i am just reading you wrong.

(goes on to correctly list a lot of open things about the R1)

Well, I was sort of trying to admit that I can be a pain in the ass ...

Basically where I am is that after a discussion with you many moons ago I came to the conclusion that your and Jim's heart were in the right place and whatever decisions you made were simply trying to strike a balance giving the customer all that you can with a new and developing product without creating too many potential problems/liabilities down the road. So I kind of see RED like family and I have pretty much that family unconditional love. On the other hand, I was raised in a family with an Irish father and English mother so, despite the unconditional love, there wasn't a lot of holding back on expressing the differing opinions.

The card thing isn't that big of a deal, it is just my feeling that we should be trusted with it at some level.

Us underwater guys are virtually always wanting/needing to push the limits of the technology, jury rigging things and bending safety rules, etc. - and just naturally chafe at anything that says you can't do that...

Just wondering if you guys have been working with PreTec to provide us with some awesome CFast card solution. Their CFast 32 Gb cards have been out since March 09 if I'm not mistaken. I'd love to see some blazing SATA speeds with those cards.
I didn't do the math, but it seems like they would work for some 6K high speed stuff!:)

Yes indeed.. we try and get every card as soon as it comes out.. most of the times the manufacture's speed ratings are either BS, inconsistent card to card, or they don't play nice with the way RED writes to the cards... but every once in awhile we get surprised :)

Jarred, you mentioned "We get surprised" which ones are you surprised by?

thanks.

did anyone try Transcend and Hoodman ???

Yup just tested the Transcend.. still not there yet :( Tested really fast for the normal Block Size a CF card would normally see, but didn't do so well for the way the RED writes to them.

Hi Jarred, I'm assuming the 300x Lexar 16 gig cards have been tested and are a no go -- could you enlighten us as to why the 8 gig cards work so well and the 16 gigs aren't up to it? Is Lexar changing the way they manufacture or rate?

Thanks.

Hi Jim,
I just test the new SanDisk Extreme Pro 64GB card, It's 90MB/s, But it only let me format by 2K, I try to check the read and white speed on my computer, It's faster than RedCF a lot. could you tell me why? Is That means I am only stick with RedCF anyway?

Don't expect to be answered unless you have your real name. Those are Jim's rules.

Hi Joseph Hutson,
Siuki Yip is my real name from my passport, in chinese is 葉紹麒, hahahahaha

How about the extreme pro 32s? Can you give us the parameters (or a benchmark test) you use so we can test these ourselves. Some of us have a strong interest in cards larger than 16 even if we are limited only to the original REDCODE (RC28?) 4K 2:1 data rate. Also have some dual use desire i.e. REDONE and 5D/7D etc.

Would like to have some idea of what the real parameters are.

Also what are the actual specs on the RED 16GB and do these work in 5d/7d?

Good question!!!!

An answer from Jim please :drool5:

I have a SanDisk 64GB Extreme Pro right now. Actually just got it yesterday. Haven't started any real testing.

Some quick file access tests show that read speed looks to be close to the 90MB/s claimed. Write speed is noticeably slower, like half as fast. But I haven't done any serious benchmarks yet.

Compatibility is an issue. The card doesn't work in any device I've tried, other than my FW800 and eSATA card readers. ...Kinda like the RED 16GB cards.

Thank you for your reply.

Waiting for an answer from Red.

Tested these ones already.. dropped frames. Weird controller in the cards indeed that probably still needs some work. I was hoping the Photofast would be fast enough as well but they are half the speed as the Sandisk ones.

Hoping Lexar comes out with something new soon.... or we might need to make our own again when it comes time to increase size.

Bummer... Too bad. I had high hopes for these cards.

I haven't stuck the 64GB card into the RED yet, but it would be limited to 2K anyhow. This SanDisk card is probably getting sent back. It's not compatible with the D2x or D3x, so that kills the option of keeping it for use with the DSLRs here. The Nikons have a 32GB ceiling on their CF interface anyway.

Thank you for your confirmation Jarred ! You're the man..
