  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birns and Sawyer's matching test: RED ONE, Canon 5D Mark II and Panasonic Lumix GH1

Wow. The GH1 footy actually cut in with the other stuff almost painlessly. Does that mean they pushed the shit out it to get it to match the R1/5D stuff, or does it mean they had to 'cripple' the R1/5D stuff to (almost) match the GH1 shots??

that was much more interesting than I would have thought. The GH1 footage really impressed me. it cut in very well, and appeared to have better skew and shutter characteristics than the mkII.

I'm going to have to investigate the GH1 now. Curious about sensor size, framerates, codec, etc.

The GH1 is actually a nice little camera... The codec absolutely cripples it, but if you get the look right in camera - it's basically the HVX look (with real 1080 detail/resolution) with built in 35mm-ish DOF. Get some fast lenses and it really looks quite nice. Way less aliasing and jello than the 5dmk2.

is there anyway to get nikon glass onto the GH1?

I personally didn't like a lot of the GH1 shots. I'm still impressed by the lack of noise on the 5D. Definitely looks like a winner when it comes to any low-light shooting.

Not a very good matching test. all nighttime RED footage shot only on 300mm, then NO RED footage on the roof early morning then back to a 300mm and a zoom- what happened you guys forget the box of primes on the red team

Absolutely. But for other stuff, the 5d feels a bit mushy to me.

Yea, they totally didn't do the RED footage any justice - which seems to be a recurring occurrence when people do these type of shoot outs. Shame really.

. If they could have replicated a majority of shots with each camera then things would be a little clearer i suspect.I would have loved to see those 50, 85 ultra prime shots on the RED ONE.

Excellent!

But also I could do the same just with R1 with EasyRig 3 Cinema handheld rig plus IMS and bunch of the best still (all mounts) and PL cine lenses (Panavision lenses also included).

I said just with one cam (R1) in all types of shooting situation like at an available light, indoors and outdoors in 4K, 3K (varispeed) and 2K (120fps), etc...

What else...?

For my point of view not so much need of 3 different cams and all those shooting and post mess.

Not even when Scarlet and Epic would ship.

Just take your old R1 upgraded to Mysterium-X and go...

Again question: What else...?

R1 didn't hold up so well in those lighting conditions. I'm guessing they didn't use Build 20 / color science?

It was all available light. The Red usually doesn't do very well in those conditions because it's a slower camera than the other two, so everything is going to be underexposed - something you really don't want to do with a Red - even if you shoot wide open with Super Speeds.

As explained by the people who shot it, this was all done totally guerilla and run and gun. The lenses weren't changed on individual shots because there was no time to run and get the other lens while they were shooting in the middle of Hollywood Blvd (the entire crew was the three operators and the director).

As for other comments: It was also explained that this was not a "shoot out." It was an experiment, something they did because they could, and because they thought it might be interesting to see if you could intercut images from these three devices, shot under admittedly poor conditions, and not have a completely jarring effect. Not to mention that they liked the fact that they could use the Panasonic and Canon cameras in a completely guerilla approach, because everyone thought they were just tourists taking stills. Their opinion - and the only really sensible opinion - was that these are three different tools, each with strengths and weaknesses, meant for different purposes. They were the first to say that they wouldn't really want to shoot a longform piece on the Canon, nor would they consider the Lumix a "movie camera."

Judging from some of the comments here, my guess is that they might at least somewhat regret having shown this in the first place.

Most people I think understand the intent, and like I said, it's indeed and interesting experiment. Of course, this is REDuser, so i don't think it should be any surprise to find a RE bias here.

Myself, I'm still very interested on how one can use a nikon lens on the GH1?
