RealD's projectors produce stereoscopic images with one projector, and therefore are capable of projecting 2D at 48 fps. Are RealD projectors the only ones capable of this, or is it standard in digital exhibition?

Most digital projectors these days are capable of refresh rates up to at least 120fps.

The RealD system requires a projector running at 144 fps. This allows each eye to be updated 3 times per second, often referred to as triple flashing. 24x2x3 = 144. This is done to minimize eyestrain and is pretty effective at doing that.

3 times per frame, I think you meant...

I.e.

Frame sequence:
1L 1R 1L 1R 1L 1R * 2L 2R 2L 2R 2L 2R * etc

Yes, of course, 3 times per frame. Did I say per second? Must have been drowsing off there....
