News Corp is set to start charging online customers for news content across all its websites.
The media giant is looking for additional revenue streams after announcing big losses.
(…)
News Corp owns the Times and Sun newspapers in the UK and the New York Post and Wall Street Journal in the US.

Yeah I imagine that's going to work out great for them like it did for the New York Times and CNN. Good luck with that...

This could work, you know, if Murdoch bought every news outlet on the planet as well as the AP & Reuters so only he controlled the news. I don't get how he's going to make a dime off this idea, but obviously he's a good business guy so maybe he knows something I don't.

There is no news. There is only content.

I could not agree more. I can't even imagine wanting to pay for FauxNews, if I thought they (mainstream news outfits) had any journalistic credibility I might actually consider it.

I don't see the buyouts of AP and Reuter's happening because thankfully his company's losing big dollars these days. Which is why he's probably had some accounting firm calculate the potential profits if say every person who currently lands on his news sites were to suddenly have to pay $20 a month. Problem with that equation is there's no way it's going to happen. 99% of the people currently going to his site will instantly go someplace else the moment the fees appear. And he'll be forced as CNN and NYT were to either bag the whole idea or settle for no traffic to the sites.

There will always be some free news somewhere that people will turn to, if and until every gov't of the world legislates that all news services must be fee-based. Which is never going to happen. So yeah, this idea I'm sure looks great on paper but to anyone who understands the basic workings of the web and brand loyalty vs. very little interest in fees would see this could never work. Personally I consider I'm already paying for the internet as a whole by paying for broadband service. Anything on top of that has got to be super premium to get me to pay more, and news from Fox is definitely not such a thing.

If I were going to subscribe to any news site it would be AP. Most news outlets get the bulk of their non-local news stories from AP. Since print news is dying a slow death, there has to be some form of payment online for real news stories covered by real journalists that are fact checked for accuracy by good editors. It is expensive to field and support good journalists all over the world. Forget TV news, its all commentary these days with a corporate agenda.

If we want a strong independent free press, then we need to pay for it as independent free citizens.

ture dat

ture dat

most of the stuff out there now is so empty of any value --- wonder how they think the stuff they create is worth paying for .... the model for so long has been to put up crap and let people come look at it for free and then charge the advertisers ... I wonder if they truly have the skill to or stomach to do real news anymore ..... but then again it is fox and they have a cult following who do any thing to listen to people reinforce their own opinions instead of watching real news

I agree the agencies are the best source for news, they always were, but only since the internet have we had direct access to them.

The Really good news is....... Fox is going to start a news service!

Sorry, this won't work Murdoch. :emote_hanged:
