  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New CF cards coming soon?

Same story - performance will vary from that stated by manufacturer - and performance for high-bandwidth sequential file write is where it really counts. No doubt RED will test them out, but I wouldn't hold your breath on it, and I really wouldn't buy any of these just yet.

how much 4K can you put on a 32gb card?

Yes indeed.. we try and get every card as soon as it comes out.. most of the times the manufacture's speed ratings are either BS, inconsistent card to card, or they don't play nice with the way RED writes to the cards... but every once in awhile we get surprised :)

Yummy. Red #3971 is very much looking forward to it. About 15min of 4k is a very useable length even for interviews. 1000 feet of 4k :)

Will they be about twice as much as the 16gig cards?

The pre-production units are due in soon... Media is something that we take pretty seriously so there are still a couple months of hardcore testing that needs to be done before they hit the streets. A bit to early to determine pricing yet :(

32 gigs would really make a difference for us U/W guys. Eliminating the hard drive would knock off a significant amount of length/volume and source of additional heat generation.

Need a hardcore betatester? If I can't break it nobody can! :biggrin:

And speed... Compact Flash has generally been the faster of the 2 "standard" formats. You are right about Type II going the way of the do-do bird... and things will change again when CFAST makes its way out of the labs and bring a whole new form factor and connection interface.

The good thing though is RED will be ready wherever the industry decides to go, as on both the DSMC family and the RED ONE have modular media bays.

I just shipped my RED yesterday for the upgrade program where I'll be getting the 16GB CF card reader installed. Should I just wait for a 32GB CF card reader to be released? Or will that be something I will just have to pay even if I hold on the upgrade?

The willingness and foresight RED has shown both in designing modular interfaces and being willing to toss out the roadmap when better options surface deserves praise.:party:
While P2 workflow has much to like, Panasonic soured a lot of users with their proprietary media and high costs.

It should also be noted that when early A/B tests of RedCode showed no discernable difference vs uncompressed, RED stopped putting resources into developing uncompressed solutions - even though it gave critics ammunition to denigrate the RedOne. Jim's guiding principle of thinking of himself as a user of the technology first, and Red Leader second, is one of the things that has made this ride so special.

Before I get off this soapbox I want to note that a lot of folks, particularly on CML love to bash Jim for his "hype" tactics. That's a very limited view. Red is changing the game by making bold choices and believing that a better way is really a better way, even if it violates convention.

Is it just me? I'm really not bothered about any card above 8GB. I find it it a bit unnerving to shoot so much footage on one CF card. It's like putting all eggs... Ehh..just thinking aloud.
 
How about sub $200 16gb cards? It seems there are a bunch of new offerings that weren't up the last time the topic was raised, especially those CF-as-mini-RAID look fascinating, plus a bunch of other fast CF

Second, any thoughts to the Red One being unlocked from using only proprietary CF? Maybe a warning saying 'you are using unverified media'? It'd be great to address the concerns while still leaving open the possibilities
