Hi guys. I'm wondering if anyone else has started their collection of Nikon lenses for the S35, or if this is not a good idea. Should I wait until the S35 is actually released? Is there any way I could get burned by jumping the gun and buying lenses?

I've shot Nikon for over 20 years but recently I sold my last 3 Nikon lenses, partly because they were not very good and one was an auto focus only push pull zoom so it would have been useless anyway. The other was a 30-70 slow zoom. Also useless.

So now I can start over and buy good lenses. Do you think the Nikon mount will be available right away or will I buy the S35 body and be sitting around for 2 months with a camera I can't use since I decided to buy the Nikon lenses before the camera and mount were available.

Also, where is a good place to buy Nikon lenses? Anything I should look for or avoid specifically? Or should I just wait like everyone else?

20mm f2.8
24mm f2.0
35mm f1.4
50m f1.4
85mm f1.4
135mm f2.0

Just sent them off to RPlens for their cinema conversion.

Need to add a nice 100mm macro and I'll have a nice complete set.

Zeiss ZF:

21mm f/2.8
28mm f/2
35mm f/2
50mm f/2 makro
85mm f/1.4
100mm f/2 makro

Get them from Duclos Lenses with the cine-mod, and you'll have the best Nikon mount set available.

why would I send all my lenses to be converted for cinema? wouldn't I just get a nikon mount for the S35 and I'm done?

The cinema conversion means de-clicking the iris and putting lens gears and an 80mm front on.

Doesn't change the mount.

Well worth it.

I have these (Duclos mod) and use the Nikon mount. Fantastic.

Got it. That makes perfect sense.

Hi there,

Could anyone recommend a fast Nikon-mount zoom covering roughly 24-70mm? Ideally f2.8 or faster across the entire range. Searching eBay, I've found plenty of slow zooms. I've also found a Sigma 28-70 f2.8 AF lens but it has a minuscule focus throw so would be very tricky to manual focus with. There's also a Nikon 17-55mm f2.8 AF-S lens but it costs a lot!

I've got a decent set of Nikon primes and a Sigma 10-20mm f4 zoom lens but I'd like to add a fast zoom to my kit without spending a fortune. I was hoping to find a decent, old, manual-focus zoom but I haven't been able to find such a beast on eBay.

You mean like this?

a bit like that, yes. but I'm after a 2nd hand lens, ideally made before autofocus was implemented (to keep the price down!)

I've got a nice Nikon FX lens collection I've been buying piece by piece on Ebay. If you lurk and shop and snipe it when you buy it (I use esnipe), you can get excellent prices on used lenses.

I'm talking to the Dulcos folks about converting them. Depending on price, I might just have those gears added. Much nicer than the adapter rings that you buy from Redrock and other vendors.

I would get Nikon glass for playing around or for no-low budget stuff.
There's no need to go over board buying the fastest / best Nikons and getting them rehoused. If you're doing a lot of healthy paid work, you're going to be renting or buying cine lenses or Red Primes anyways, and that's where I would put the cash.
There are some Nikon lenses however, like certain macros, where its hard or expensive to rent/buy the equivalent in cine land - in which case it would be wise to buy those speciality lenses beforehand and have both the PL and Nikon mounts for your camera.

What will be the quality of 35mm still lenses on the s35? It's like shooting on a 1.6x crop camera...

Canon
28mm f/1.8
50mm f/1.4
17-40mm f/4L
24-105mm f/4L IS
70-200mm f/2.8L IS
400mm f/2.8L IS
2x Tele

personally i would wait. i burned myself by doing that too early before the R1 was released. sold my good old mamiya 7ii to buy glass, then ended up choosing to stick with pl-mount and having to resell the nikon glass.

I hope this is the right topic!

I have a question about a sigma lens, i have for my D90. In the near future i want to buy a Scarlet s35. The Sigma lens is not a full frame lens but a APS lens. Is it possible that is fits on a Scarlet with a nikon mounth. And do i get the same image when i use my d90 or is the lens diffferent because of the chip size?

lens specs:

Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 II EX DG MACRO HSM

I'm really new with all the lens stuff because i'm not a camera man or operator... But i need a good image for motion graphics and short movies... so maybe you guys can help me out

thanks

Buy a set of Nikons that match well in terms of color consistency. The good thing about buying through Peter Sensor at RP Lens is that he hand picks the lenses and tries to get ones that are above par, and then they are modified to have the Delrin focus ring, click stops removed, and 80mm fronts added.

I have used Nikon AI, AIS, the modern zooms, and the Zeiss ZF lenses. In terms of cine feel, the ZF do have better focus mechanics, and they seem pretty darn sharp. The Nikons are sharp, many of them have very nice Bokeh, and they can be more affordable.

But, having used the Red Pro Primes I have lens envy, as they are sharp, nice contrast, and match the RED really well. And the mechanics are very good. The only drawback - they are heavy.

If a lightweight setup is what you are after and your lens budget is under $10,000 then you should look at the Zeiss ZF. They give you lightweight, relatively fast (although wish they had more consistent speed), and have very good mechanics for still lenses.

S35/REDOne is basically the same as APS-C (the most common there is also an APS-H.) the APS-C lenses work fine as far as optics and coverage, but the nikon mounts are dumb mounts. Birger makes an EOS "smart" mount for Canon SLR lenses and we commonly use regular and APS-C (called EF-S lenses by Canon)

Hmm...I'm also interested in this as well. I was under the impression that since the Zeiss ZF are 35mm lenses, there wouldn't be any problems with using them with an S35 Scarlet, but it causes cropping on the image? I admit that I don't know very much about lenses, as I am just starting out (but learning quickly!) I'm looking to invest $15k to $18k in a fully kitted out Scarlet S35, including lenses, but I understand that lenses (and the person behind them) make the image. Should I be saving up for an RPP set instead? Honestly, these kinds of decisions are difficult to make without seeing sample films from the 2/3" Scarlet, as that may actually be enough for my needs. I'm looking to begin directing some indie flicks as well as write screenplays, and the friend that I'm splitting this with would likely be using it to shoot some reels for school. We're both looking for shallow DoF, but the price of an S35 Scarlet kit is looking less and less viable, especially with lenses.
