hello.
Am I nuts?

locked picture and prepping files for color correction in Color.

Trying to follow the RED Whitepaper for online.
(paper dated November 11, 2008 from www.red.com/support)

Claims FCP will injest R3D footage as a media manage (after you create an off-line seq of your locked project).*

The Paper suggests that when I right-click the new offline sequence in Browser, select "Batch Capture" from the shortcut menu, the Log & Transfer window will appear, allowing me to reinjest RED footage needed for my sequence.

This process apparently works easily for my color correctionist. So clearly I'm missing something??

any ideas?

THANK YOU.

*I am doing "Workflow 2: Work offline Using ProRes; Finish Using RED Quicktime Media" - (my offline was ProRes (hq)).

Based on this workflow, I get all way through step 5.3 of Workflow 2 -- creating offline project and setting Log & Transfer settings.

then, as mentioned above, it's a dead-end with the last step of injesting via a batch capture.

For this method to work you need to have created your offline ProRes with Log & Transfer. If you created them with eg Red Rushes it won't work.

Nick, does FCP uprez the entire R3D file, or just the part of the R3D used in the sequence?

Nick,
Thanks so much for your reply.

Yes... my R3Ds were transcoded in Red Rushes.

Darn.

:emote_hanged:

To test this -
I recreated a short sequence (this time using Log & Transfer to manually set in and out points and ingest as ProRes, then making that sequence offline, then reingesting as R3D) --
And the whole process worked perfectly.

I'm guessing that L&T bakes in metadata that facilitates the batch L&T process, which RR does not.

So this probably means there is no way "trick" L&T into batch reingesting something transcoded w/ RR...

I guess it's time to look into some 3rd party alternatives...

As a side note:
It seems ... really... ODD... that the RED whitepaper, put out by RED support, doesn't explicitly warn of this HUGE caveat??

(I'm pretty sure I didn't miss it, but please correct me if I'm wrong. All they say is that "L&T is their preferred method of ingest.") This seems like a pretty significant piece of info to make clear...!

PS.

Joe,
It seems this process only onlines the portion of the R3D shot that is used in your sequence. (Whereas, if you were to simply Reconnect your ProRes to R3D files without the batch ingest, it would be connecting to the ENTIRE R3D.)

CORRECTION (just for proper documentation) -

The dead end for me was actually step #5.2

"5.2. When the Import Preferences sheet appears, choose Native from the
“Transcode to” column corresponding to the RED Plugin. "

You will know that this process is not working, because there will be no other options in the "Transcode to" column. For me, the only thing listed was "ProRes".

If I'm understanding you correctly, are you saying you don't see the Native setting in L+T preferences for RED footage. You only see ProRes.

Do you have the latest Final Cut Pro Plugin from the RED site?

Hey Steve,
Thanks for your note.

I'm all up to date. Have current everything.

The issue is that you have to transcode your ProRes offline using Log & Transfer. You cannot use Red Rushes. I mentioned above how I confirmed this (by manually reingesting new ProRes offline files from the same R3Ds).

I have found very little documentation of this, and yet people are having the same problem. So, as an afterthought, I added that "correction" above - so people can know exactly what the dead end looks like.

I hope no one else has to go through this!

I did check it out, thanks so much!

Seems Clipfinder is best way to go.

For some reason, I'm having trouble getting Clipfinder to ship back a proper XML to FCP that's connected to the R3Ds.... they're still connected to the original ProRes movs...

not sure what I'm doing wrong. Following the CF manual (minus the QuickRender in REd Alert - I hope that's not causing problems?).

In CF, I select File --> replace mov with R3D. Then I navigate to my R3Ds. The "info" column indicates that I'm connected to the R3ds. Then I select Edit --> run conform on FCP XML file. When I bring the XML into a new FCP prj.

If you happen to know of a better "How To" or a thread that describes this Clipfinder conform process (particularly the Conform Settings), please let me know.
Thanks again.

cheers
susan

Susan,

Unfortunately, the "conform" section in the Clipfinder manual dates from the time before RED came out with the Color workflow.
To prep your edit for Color, just do the following (with the latest beta version)
- select "Run conform on FCP XML File" from the Tools menu
- check "replace clips with H-proxy"
- check "match only first 16 characters"
- set "Clip Directories" to the location of your R3Ds
- set "adjust sequence width..." to your target dimensions
- press "Run conform"
- reimport the resulting XML into FCP, then "send to Color"

Feel free to mail me if you need more info.
My mail address is in the Clipfinder Help Pages (CMD-?).
I'll also be in LA for the REDucation community day on July 23rd.

Cheers,
Hans

Hello Steve
Would it not be so much simpler to simply output a quicktime file with Red Cine, then do a file import to FCP Studio ?
