Unfortunately one of our customers left two Red packages in their car in Oceanside, CA overnight. The car was broken into and all equipment was stolen. Including but not limited to (2) Red bodies (#810 and #237).

Also stolen were a set of Zeiss T1.3 Prime lenses (MK III), an 18-85mm zoom, (2) 20" Sony Monitors, (2) Oconnor 2060 heads w/ Sticks, (2) EVFs w/ ET mounts, (2) 5.6" LCDs, all the batteries, drives, cf cards, accessories and an Action-Cam stabilizer.

If anyone hears or sees anything, please email or call us at Indie Rentals - (www.indierentals.com).

Thank you for your help.

sorry to hear that.

But...
One of your customer? Hummmmm.
One Car? Hummm
All of this in One car? what was that a luxury stretch limo?
doubt.

THAT BLOWS!

Have you looked at the customers themselves? I don't know who they are, but that's:

A) quite the package to leave in one's car - especially after all of the
'stolen from my car' posts here.

B)Just so happens to be 2 complete packages with lenses...

Im glad someone said it...

How could some random break into a car and have that much time to snake all the gear... usually people are super fast with break ins.. they dont have time to sit there and load shit from one car to another.. this smells like an inside job (not you indie.. but the renters)

it sounds very fishy....

I have had full camera packages including support and lenses, to total the value of a large house, but even so I have reinforced windows, a double alarm system, imbedded GPS units (4 of them), and 24/7 Onstar System, I would not ever leave any of my gear in the Vehicle, for this I always have a Dolly were and when needed I unload all the gear and bring it with me, even if it is just to go to dinner for an hour, I have done so and will continue to do so even when carrying only my Photographic gear which only amounts to just under 20K.

This stolen stuff has been happening way to much, other people are so stupid, and careless, if people are coming in here to post about their stolen stuff, it means presumably that they have also been reading about the stuff getting stolen, so.. WHY keep leaving your gear on the CAR???

Possible answers:

A) you are an absolute F%@%@% IDIOT!!

B) you are claiming insurance money to pay for the gear, since you can't pay for it yourself!

C) you are renting form a company and want to rip them off!!

Believe that for you guys at Indie Rentals "C" applies in this case, if not then what does apply to the guys that rented from you is absolutely "A"

Either way people have to smarten up, and sorry to you guys for this loss of gear.

ciao

It does sound fishy. But I know from experience that it can and does happen.

I purchased a used 8x10 Linfhof View camera from a local establishment many years ago and that same night it was stolen from my vehicle. Needless to say my insurance company was not favorable impressed with me. They had to pony up for a brand new Sinar which was significantly more than the used Lihholf. (a new Linhof though was much more than the Sinar).

You can be sure the insurance company will look very closely at the customer.

As Ketch says, the stupid part is leaving it in the car in the first place.

Thoughts on the subject of theft of camera equipment -

Be mindful of your surroundings when loading/leaving BOTH the rental house AND location. By this, who's just sitting in their car in the area? Hey, that car looks familiar or has been with me since the rental house.... Stuff like this. Even with a camera truck parked in your driveway... NOT safe. Nor is the trunk. (Even if you've done this a thousand times, still stupid.) If you're going to leave everything in your car - chances are the criminals didn't chance upon your car....

Still think the renter's are involved...

Any evidence (like video from location) from where it happened?

1) Absolutely agree with you all that leaving equipment in the car overnight is stupid. Should be obvious that one should not do that. We even told the customer not to (for some reason - I don't know why my employee decided to tell them that, but I think they seemed pretty "green").

2) Yes, it all fit in the van they drove away from our facility.

3) I hope his insurance (which is valid) pays, but who knows. We have backup insurance, but of course our rates will go up.

We definitely don't need our equipment stolen - especially this stuff. Although we have plenty of other Red packages, we still have to get the claim and buy the same stuff to replace it, all the while losing potential revenue while it's not available to us to rent.

Anyway, yes people, remember - protect your gear, even if you rent it... Our customer is going to be financially hurt from this regardless. We are too. Be smart.

Thanks for the comments, and if anything floats up on any of your jobs - let us know. Many of our ATA cases are green with a yellow stripe around the top.

I'm sorry, but this person was fucking stupid to leave all this stuff in a car overnight. Maybe there is some kind of reasonable excuse, but I have a hard time even trying to imagine what that excuse would be.

Just yesterday we were discussing how all these Reds almost always disappear from cars. And then BAM, 24 hours later, another car heist. I think Ketch has it right. Get motion alarms for the cars, and it would be very wise to embed laptop-version lojacks into Reds. If I get Epic, I am going to lojack it for sure.

Theft of camera gear out of cars happens ALL THE TIME! Hell theft of camera gear on set happens all the time. I recall a moment back in film school when a thief literally rushed onto the location and grabbed the camera, tripod and all and took off running.

Bottom line is thieves are amongst us at all time.

Indie Rents clued us in I believe, This is an expensive lesson for some greenhorns.

in NY some insurance policies have clause that will not pay for equipment left in an unattended vehicle. This clause was put in place after there was a bunch of these type of thefts were happening over the last 2 years. As a rental house, how are we to control what the customer does. We are not leaving the vehicle unattended, the customer is. If anything, they should not pay for any of the customers own equipment only. Brokers will remove this clause most of the time if you ask them and it is up to you if you want to accept this type of coverage.

You should also be documenting any lost rentals due to this theft and submitting for loss of revenue which you should be covered for.

Expensive lessons are soon learnt !

I have been following reduser for over a year, and always reading about some red or other being stolen from a car, and always thinking you idiots, why leave it in there ?

But a month ago, ... on a quiet sunday afternoon ... after finishing a shoot on a hot day, rare here in London,

I packed our libec 30 jib, dolly track, tripods, 7" production monitor and lenses / radio mics into the car and headed over the road to a local pub to quench a good days work. The car park being in full view of the pub, apart from my car duh !

I took my 2 * ex1's one clean, one with letus, with me to the pub, On my return, passenger window smashed and all kit, (except boom mic with 416 thank god), gone !

I think we must have been watched during the day, and taken advantage of as soon as we disappeared for half an hour.

Lesson is, It doesnt matter how comfortable you feel, in leaving the equipment in your car, just imagine you are leaving the kit in a car with no glass windows, as it only takes some shit of a kid with a screwdriver, to make that window into tiny little pieces,

Then unless your kit is tethered in some way, or have a cage, you are fucked !

I will never ever leave kit unattended again, and the next time my other half asks me "should i stay with the car" i wont turn her down again !

NEVER LEAVE ANYTHING IN YOUR CAR, UNATTENDED, IF YOU DO , DONT EXPECT IT TO BE THERE ON YOUR RETURN

cheers guys !
Andy

I wouldn't be able to sleep if something valuable is left in my car.

Eric, sorry to hear this...that really sucks. Insurance will kick in...the premium is higher for unattended vehicles.

Are you guys going to retain your place on the R1 list? It would be a shame for someone like you guys to lose low numbers, especially #237, on top of losing two full packages.

It makes no sense not to have lo-jack built into every single camera though. Even if it becomes harder now with the modular design.
