...calm before the storm? :emote_happyhappy:

It is almost time based on release dates, a little more and "Summer 2009 (est.)" will be technically over.

Anyone wanna make bets? I say they are a month or so late but there is more in the bag than they let on with announcements to date. That's what I'm hoping for anyway.

Either way there are definitely several working DSMC's being tested right now by some very lucky fellows... whom I hate! :)

i say they're hard at work, but I still don't expect to see anything released until late this year, if that.

yes, he did just get married ...
perhaps off on a 2nd honeymoon ??

Yea, but I still expected one or two posts here and there. It's been dead silent around here. He's only replied like twice in the last month!

Well at least it can't be bad, that's for sure. It just feels lonely around here... like he is cheating on us with an other forum. Dam u Jim!! :)

I do miss those surprise Sunday night posts back in the day. I just knew if I stayed up late enough, Jim would drop a 'pearl of goodness'.

Don't hold your breath...

All over the world people are trying to keep their jobs, houses, etc.

Loans for this type of thing are much harder to get right now, and won't be any easier to get for several months to come, at the very least.

Red will hold out on any more details regarding release until there is enough noise on the forums, etc., to warrant an explanation. Which will likely be that "due to the economy, release has been delayed".

A single, but strong indicator of this is the fact that the EVF that I've been expecting for the last five months (which I've paid for in full by the way) currently isn't shipping due to "parts suppliers dealing with the difficult economic climate".

Bottom line:

Now, or any time within the next six months would be the worst possible time to release the new cameras.

Don't get me wrong, I'll be buying a couple Scarlets and upgrading to Epic as soon as I possibly can. So I hope I'm wrong.

But my money is on Spring 2010 for either camera, at the earliest.

Really hits home when you put it like that

Logan,

I don't entirely agree with your angle. Despite the current economic cycle, business must move forward or risk falling by the wayside. My personal opinion is that Red is building a 'better mousetrap', being very careful and deliberate. Jim will speak when the time is right.

If we haven't noticed, Red has been pretty active with product releases of late. My two cents

mhalsell,

I agree with your statement that businesses must move forward, even in challenging times.

Which is why I bought my Red and all the accessories at the height of the economic disaster, investing tens of thousands of dollars in the process. :) And I'm doing just fine, thanks to the quality, affordable products the Red has made available.

But I also feel that Red is probably loathe to dump two brand new cameras, and all the necessary accessories at a time when people just plain don't have the money for them. So why rush to release a product that the market isn't ready for?

Now I know a lot of people have saved up their pennies for Scarlet. But with just the body, you're just getting started, and the accessories add up, very quickly.

Back to my EVF example. What makes you think that if just one part supplier who's having a little trouble with the economy can't fulfill their orders, that all these other suppliers are magically going to be able to provide for entirely new camera systems and accessories?

Sorry to rain on your parade... cause I know how exciting it is to be a part of all this... But a good shot of reality (in terms of the delivery schedule) is at most times drastically overdue for this forum.

I wish I saw this posting from Jim earlier... if anything reinforces what I've been saying, it's this:

"We don't have the best track record of making projected release dates. In many instances, we announce something and then frustrate our customers by being late. We now find ourselves not wanting to talk about a lot of things currently in development. But you should know that there are a ton of things going on behind the scenes.

We recently asked for "test pilots" to try out our new color science. About a week later there is a build for everyone to work with. Then, soon after, there is a full download package called Build 20 available. This seems like a much better approach to "announcement and release" compared to our old way of doing things.

If we feel fairly certain of hitting our targets in a timely fashion, we'll tell you about it. RED Rocket™™ is an example.

But going forward we are not likely to announce or give out dates of things we are working on until just before they are ready. The exception would be something we need a lot of customer feedback on (like Scarlet & EPIC)... but even then we'll try to get closer to completion before talking about it and asking for feedback.

We really appreciate our customers and their patience with us as we are building a camera company from scratch. It has been much more complicated and difficult than ever imagined. We are always trying to find ways to improve our business. That includes how we communicate with our partners and customers."

Jim

Now that is candor I can appreciate!

People hear and see what they want, but to me, this post is FULL of subtext, particularly regarding Epic and Scarlet.

i think we'll hear something in august. big news.

Quite true. People seem to be overlooking the fact that software products (i.e., firmware, Redcine X, color science enhancements) don't rely on third party suppliers. Hardware products do.

Tom knows something we don't... :skep:

Okay, I can see them starting to take deposits on cameras soon... but delivery is a whole other issue.

No I just have a hunch something big will be announced around late Aug - initial ship dates, etc.

Jim did mention at one point that a couple of suppliers had failed due to the economy. They were scrambling to find replacements.

It's definitely a new record for longest tease. Before NAB it was pretty strongly implied that Scarlet/Epic specs changed again and would be announced 'soon'. I expect that'll be the next big announcement. More concrete MysteriumX specs.

The EVF is an interesting barometer. The 'new' EVF was supposed to be released in June I thought. Is that the one you're referring to? Maybe it got bumped off the priority list due to the already announced camera delays and focus put onto the RedRocket instead.
