  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Steven Soderbergh's "The Informant" trailer

At first i was going to say that the "look" looked a bit washed out, but then I realised the colouring perfectly suits the era the film is based in.. has a nostalgic early 90's late 80's look to it.. The glory days!

Story seems interesting... but cant say the same about the photography. Seen better stuff from the red.(like everything from the redreel)

Agreed, it suits the look of the film. I'm pumped about this one!

I think that trailer is a great example of the aesthetic of the RED image. You could look at that and sort of know it was shot RED. Not HD not FILM, but it does look like RED.

Really liked the look of this. Gave me a real sense of that time period. Warner Bros. seems to be going full steam with RED productions. They might be the studio that using the camera the most.

yea especially with films that arent highly lit RED pumped which i see often. nostalgia, stylized, etc you get to see aesthetics of red really getting into it's own. soderbergh is trying all kinds of timetables with his red's to explore.

For the record Im a massive RED supporter but this is really not the best RED footage I've seen and other than the fact that it was directed by Sodenbergh and stars Matt Damon, i don't think this is doing anything for RED. It's hard to say what was intentional, what was a limitation of the camera, or what was a mistake but the skin tones look terrible, the blooming/highlights are all over the place, and the picture is soft overall.

Poor choices or poor shooting? Looks like a combination to me. Anyone know what facility graded this?

For just one second try and forget it was shot on RED and see it as a movie... do you want to see it when it comes out in september? I think that is the question you have to ask yourself...
My answer is yes. I thought it looked pretty damn funny and well directed...

It looks like it was shot with a diffusion filter, which is an artistic choice. Not every RED movie has to be about showing off resolution.

Correct... look is intentional and double fog filter used throughout. I like it.

To me the style and look fit the film but the blown out highlights take away from the over all effect of the period look. It isn't as much a failure of the camera, but more a decision to not protect the highlights. I think the same look and feel could have been achieved with out blowing out the highlights as much, leading to a better, less "digital" look. It is the kind of thing that people who haven't worked with the Red will look at and say, "the camera looks digital". I just hope people don't get the opinion that the Red always look like that.
