  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

With Red is it possible to have an exposure that is longer than the frame rate, for example, shooting 60 fps with a 1/48 sec exposure? In essence, creating a virtual 450 degree shutter angle.

Yes but you need to install a flux capacitor.

Hahahahahahahaha.

Yes, breaking the laws of the time/space continium with a camera setting would be impressive.

I've wondered if this were possible before, kind of like so you could have a continuous timelapse. I think it's more something you would have to do in post. Set a 360 degree shutter and then do some kind of additive time echo thing. It would take forever to render but would look really cool.

I think all you'd have to is shoot at 48fps w/ a 360 degree shutter and then speed up the footage in post to 60fps, assuming you don't want the frames to pollute each other.

The HVX allows for some advanced time/space bending. You can shoot 30fps with a 1/15th shutter.

I think there is a very good and very old thread on DVXuser explaining what the camera actually did.

Roberto, I could see this being possible if the shutter was multiple of the frame rate, e.g. 30fps and 1/15th. But I think combining 60fps and 1/48th would be impossilbe for any current camera to do.

With frame accumulation it's possible but you need enough memory to hold several frame's worth of pixels - quite an issue at 4K@24-30fps.

In short, not happening on the RED ONE. Epic, who knows? :)

I used to have a Sony camcorder which could do this. Or to be strictly accurate, because it was PAL, it shot at 50 fps interlaced, with exposures of up to 0.5 seconds.

I used this feature for some interesting motion trail effects.

And it didn't have a flux capacitor AFAIK :-)

However, I have not tried this with my Red yet, so no idea if it can do it.
