  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

wireless video monitoring

Now. Because he actors are improvising, so is the steady op. So there's no marks for reference unless the whole floor is marked in grids.
So in the case where that's not an option or another tool to use, would it not better to have the AC to side of action (so he/she can better gauge the distance) and have a wireless monitor to backup with remote focus? Or what is the best solution for the job considering a compromise has to be made. ie. the producer says this is what i want to do and i'll employ the person that finds a good workaround.

I agree with arrinick...

In addition...the monitor is not going to help you to pull focus...the problem is it may look sharp on the monitor but you have to understand THAT IS NOT THE REAL IMAGE. This is what is being reflected off the shutter and into a video camera...that has it's own little focus all unto itself.

If your ac needs an additional tool to pull focus in your situation try a "CINE TAPE" Most rental houses carry them.

Pulling off a monitor in critical changing situations like this is the wrong way to do it - in other words by the time the monitor displays the picture as being out of focus it is too late so is your film/main camera. it is the amateur answer to the problem - a good ac will be working off 2 possible systems 1. his sense of distance honed through experience and 2. possibly a camera mounted focus system (about 7000 dollars) which will give a readout of subject to camera distance - again this is just a useful guide and can get fooled.

In short - you can't beat a good AC.

Good Call.

An ac that wants to work with Steadycam needs to be excellent at judging distance from straight on, or from profile. You should watch the rehersal closely, and get rough marks all over; as much as you can...

either way, there are books on this topic.

How do you pull focus without the monitor?

Skill.

No really, it's that simple. After years of Acing, I can look at two objects and tell you their distance apart with a very high degree of accuracy. If I was still exercising this mental trick I'd be even better. When pulling focus for a moving target like Steadicam, the only way to do it is to place one's self perpendicular to the camera and object being photographed and judge the changing distance. If I was to rely on a monitor what it would be telling me is when images went OUT of focus, which then is too late.

I'd think i would give the job to Mitch or jtm.#1 they listened to the producer. #2 they provided a workable system. All other responses didn't take into consideration the desired conditions. Tape cannot be used in this situation. And as performance in this situation is improv, there can be no marks or necessarily rehearsals (as in: The Wind that Shakes the Barley).
