Hey guys,

As I've been reading posts on computer requirements, I
went to a computer store and showed the Red & Premiere Pro Minimum Requirements to know if I can afford a PC that allows RED editing.

This is their proposal:

System No 6 Vista 775

Case Case Atx Std Black Nops

CPU Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 3.00G/1333/12M/S775

HDRIVE SATA2 500.0 Seagate 7200.12 16M ST3500418AS

WARRANTY 4 Year Warranty

MB S775 ASUS P5Q P45 PCIE

OPSYS MS-WIN Vista HOME PREM DVD OEM EN SP1 1PK

OPT DVD+/- RW LG GH22NS30 STATA DL 22/22 OEM BLK

POWER 650W POWER ATX ANTEC EARTH EA650

SIMM KINGSTONG KVR 800MHZ DDR2 NO-ECC 4GB KIT

CRDVIDEO SAPPHIRE PCIE RAD HD4870 512M TVO BOX

HDRIVE SATA2 500.0 SEAGATE 7200.12 16M ST3500418AS

SIMM KINGSTON KVR 800MHZ DDR2 NO-ECC 4GB KIT

All this totalling Canadian $1,790 tx. included

My question is: Hoping not to spend more than $1,500 (I'm 20) Would you buy that computer? Is there a decent way to cut the prices?

I'm basically starting as a fashion photographer and music video director. So I'll use the red soon, I've used my laptop for HVX500 editing and it was ridiculously anti-proactive.

Is there any specs that would also be good but cheaper?
or should I purchase it in the US (I'm from Montreal), or Ebay, or a website that offers better prices?

Thank you very much!

Your GFX card may be not the best choice and for a computer, that will be mainly used for editing video and or photos. The choice of the GFX card is of paramount importance. Nevertheless, you need to check yourself, if chosen card is supported by your choice of software. Personally, I would go with something NVIDIA, as it seems, that it is more widely supported maker, than say ATI.

If you are going the PC route you'd want to go with the top of the line vista too. Native 64 bit is important, even if the programmes are 32 bit.

NVIDIA GTX 260
DVD writer on IDE port

6XHDD 1TO(raid5 rush)
1XHDD 1,5TO(E-sata EXT export)
COOLER MASTER 690 BOX
COOLER MASTER 600W power
VISTA PREMIUM 64bit
prefer the I7 processor, the 920 is 2,66GHZ but outperform the 3GHZ of old generation.
CS4 need a lot of ram.
R3D and REDCINE like only NVIDIA cards on PC.
This config work very well;fast,big,secure,inexpensive.
2000€ in France.I think less in the States.

Check out The Monolith thread for my own system specs, just modify to suit your budget with things like SSDs, monitor etc.

My latest system ran just under 2G's (core I7 920 Oc'd to 3.4Ghz 12GB RAM Vista ultimate 64). I'm easily able to edit 4K files previewing at 1/2 res 24fps all other settings set to highest. Honestly for the money there is no better processor out right now.

Charles follow this link and under the same user name you will find the specs to my system:
http://www.aoaforums.com/forum/inte...rclocking-the-q6600-intel-d975xbx2-board.html

The reason I chose this setup is because I have the choice of running Windows or OSx. I am much more comfortable with Windows and it was my first choice until I read this thread:
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=21851

then read this:
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=19019

With MacOsx you use the proxies instead of the redRaw to finish on. The RAW is used in cases where you have to alter the take a bit and MacOsX can you REDALERT to go back to the RAW and redo your proxies for the shot. Anyway it is all explained.

Then make sure you budget for backup. Trust me, you plug in a hard drive one day and poof your work is gone. For that check out this thread:
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=25180
I put together a LTO-3 system for $800.

The info I have provided will give you choices thats for sure. It all depends on the money you want to spend.

A tip to save money here in Canada is if you are going to buy through an online store I highly recommend NCIX:
http://ncix.com/

Why? Easy, when you go to checkout they offer a price matching service. So basically I take my item, ie: Mushkin ram and plug it into google and check out pricebat.ca. Find the cheapest store and reference the price at NCIX and boom, you get it for that price while getting everything at one store.

Just to add, my favorite part of my system is the cpu cooler, it is a monster, it's quiet and it really gets the job done.

By the way, welcome to reduser and if you have any questions about what I've written I would be more than happy to answer them.

Thank you very much!!!!

I went back to the store and simply showed the thread. The technician built another computer set-up. Quite more expensive. But like Zakaree said, worth saving money.

I'll compare the prices with NCIX store and get back on it once I get the extra money.

Thanks to everybody who helped!! I would have made a horrible mistake without these posts! :D

Hey - I haven't touched these forums in 2 years. Wow.

Anyways, for 500 I acquired a pretty meaty system that can edit 4K files previewing at half res in NLE. In AE, depending on complexity, things are little more dicey, but a ram preview fixes that...

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz (OC to 3.7ish)
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS ( Memory 640 MB + Texture Memory 1.11GB)
4gb SDRAM

Runs Maya / 3dsmax well. Render times vary but are very reasonable for 500 bucks...

NVIDIA GTX 260

And it is ok(with 10.5 leopard)? Some tricks to install it?Wich drivers?
I have hard tested the configuration i posted, here is my conclusion about security:
Because you have to use a workaround to install the os on 2 sata HDD on the Marvell sas controler in raid 1 and a raid 5 of 6 sata HDD on the intel ich10R due to this limitation of the board :
"When ICH10R SATA ports are set to RAID OR AHCI mode, SAS HDDs can be detected in windows only." --Limited by bios rom size.
The solution:
Bios 1102

1) Select RAID in bios and create Raid on Intel controller (ctrl+I). Reboot and go to bios

2) Select AHCI and create Raid on SAS controller (ctrl+M). Reboot and go to bios

3) In boot device, select Raid SAS as first hard drive, then reboot

4) Install Vista: when requested, load the Marvell driver and the Intel driver. Now you can see the 2 sata became 1.. the sata raid is created.

5) At the end of the installation, go to Computer and you can see the Raid SAS + Raid Sata correctly configured.

The drawback is:
you can't use the tools to repair the 2 raid.
Raid 1 is efficient when one hdd fails, the system is ok and can boot;you can continue to work but no access to the repair tool in Marvell gui. This is half secure.
Raid 5 works but you can't use the intel repair utility when a HDD fails because it sees HDD as individual. No security at all.

My advice for speed is:
Same config but replace the 6 HDD Raid 5 by a 6 HDD Raid 0.
For speed and security:
Keep the Raid 1 as it is for OS,use Raid 0 instead of Raid 5 which is useless for storage on 4 HDD;create an other 2 HDD Raid 0 (copy of the first) and export trought the e-sata port.
For security:
Install the os on a 2 HDD Raid 1 on the intel controler and storage on 4 HDD in Raid 5 on the same controler;use the 2 individual sas or e-sata to export.

Can you update the links there? With all this mess since the last reduser forums software error after the new user names policy, your information provided by the links doesn't match.

Sony Vegas and you are set. Definitely i7 though. If you want to save, overclock. Just ask around till you find a friend that does it and ask him to OC your i7 920 for you.

Once Chameleon Bootloader is installed, a Leopard (retail) Volume will boot from most Intel Core2 series or i7 with a vanilla install. Since 10.5.7, Apple has made it extremely easy to run and maintain OSx on a PC. I was able to update to 10.5.7 from the software update tool from 10.5.6. Your Bootloader acts as your EFI layer, and communicates to your hardware without modifying the osx install.

How reliable have you found it so far Alex?

Pretty reliable, I'm using a Black Magic Extreme and a LSI SAS RAID Card & LTo 4 Quantum.
