Just curious, what the other forum members are doing to pass the time while waiting for the Scarlet? Busy shooting projects with your current gear? Holding pat and waiting for Scarlet? Pre-production with a script in hand? Or did you just jump ship and get an EX3?

Me personally, I'm shooting a music video later this month, or at least the nightclub scene for the video. I've got some other shooting days for the video so I'll be busy with that for a few weeks, then I have to edit it. So I've got a couple weeks to keep my mind off the Scarlet.

After that it'll be back to obsessing.

Get a AJA Ki Pro (when ever in June it's supposed to drop) and use what you have now. ProRes is better than any other outta camera codec sub 25K...

Shoot your scenes with any camera and work on the acting. Work on the script. Play with lighting. Get a still camera if nothing else.

from the pictures i've seen, this doesn't look small enough to be a portable solution. maybe i'm wrong. i'd love to get one of these but it will be useless once the scarlet comes out. that's an expensive piece to add to the rig.

I just finished editing a school musical. Still need to do a sound edit on a stage performance and then I have a complete edit waiting of a live music performance of the excellent Irish music group Comas.

Besides that I'm renovating my house and started work on a short movie over at wreckamovie.com (A New Dawn)

So lot's of stuff to keep me busy until Scarlet comes along.

For those interested, I'm using an XHA1 (which will become the B-cam when I get a Scarlet Fixed)

I'm busy producing some Ads with my newly bought GH1 to get some more money. After that I'll do two Shorts just for fun and training. And then I hope the Scarlet Fixed is available. :-)

Ahh, and I'll start producing a Webshow later this month...

So, yeah. I'm busy and not sitting around waiting for the fixed scarlet. But I'd love to do all of this with the Scarlet.

just shot some super 8 Kodachrome (expired 1980) test ... the results looked pretty good ... now looking to buy a super 8 camera .... will shoot a 3-5min short on super 8 kodachrome ...

IDK bout portability, def something to consider, but it wont be useless when Scarlet comes out. Redcode has to be transcoded to edit (until Redrocket ships) Ki pro you get straight ProRes even from Scarlet, that can save time with the whole offline/online if u gonna finish in ProRes or lower.... Somethin to think about... Im in the same boat as you and alot of others waiting for Scarlet.

I am passing the time by writing / creating storyboards and retelling our native stories. Shot on the RED camera. - getting all the tiny details of a tribal elders face is beautiful. and the clarity option for color in our Tribal Artifacts is priceless for all the detail it covers, - BEAUTIFUL.

So I just have fun.

broke down and bought a D90, needed to replace my DSLR anyway so the video is just a bonus. Great pictures, the video is a challenge but fun. This is the perfect stepping stone to Scarlet for me, glad I got it.

Simplifying . . .

Simplifying . . .

I went from not buying a Red One to waiting for Scarlet to buying an EX-3 to waiting for the 5DMkII firmware update to buying one of those to developing an iPhone (and other platforms) app to allow others to generate revenue for themselves from which I take . . . 30%. Then I can REALLY do what I want!

I'm doing green screen tests on Red One, and learning the ins and outs of Red workflow from the best way to do grading, to effects, to finishing.. Also learning VFXs at fxphd and working with red footage.

Testing out various VFX shots on HVX.. By the the time scarlet arrives, I'll be ready to pull clean green screens and match move VFXs to be composited into the superb images that'll come off the camera.

And finally working on a feature script for the Ultimate Filmmaking Competition. Will plan on shooting a short scene from the script on the scarlet in the late winter.

Picked up the HD POV cam from Sony to fool around with for the summer. Will hopefully make a great supplemental camera once the Scarlett arrives.

Hmm

Hmm

I also went from not buying two RED Ones (canceled them) to deciding I want to wait for Scarlet, basically. It was the best decision I could have made. I was not professional enough to own a RED One, I really didn't deserve that. Sure, sure, it's a capitalist system, and I have the money, but the point is you shouldn't be so concerned about gear (as I was) when you lack the knowledge to put together a really professional project.

That being said, I am there now. I'm ready to step up to a truly professional camera. I use HVX200s, and have two of those, which get out there on the rental market a good deal, I've easily made my money back from rentals and saved rental fees, so that's great. The HVX200 has been a fantastic intermediary camera. Not to mention that I'm focusing for now on corporate work, and those cameras will continue to be solid for that type of work for some time to come.

It's just personally speaking, the hobbyist in me (I consider my narrative work a hobby for now), wants to own a few Scarlets, probably two different models, one higher end, one lower (higher frame rates, etc.), so that I can do my personal projects on a better camera. I do not believe in renting. Renting is a total waste of money. That's one thing I said when I entered this business and was a n00b, and still years later absolutely maintain. Renting is just like renting an apartment -- a great way to flush money down the toilet and gain nothing by it. If you want to use something often, you buy it. I'm willing to rent things I can't afford ;) Technocranes, huge generator trucks, etc. haha.

I'm going to shoot my second short I hope within the next 6 weeks, I have the script in rough draft form, it'll be final probably within a week or two, and mostly final by the end of tonight actually I think. It being just a comedy like my first short, it's fine not being shot with a gorgeous, perfect camera, the HVX200 looks good already. It's just not ideal, that's all.

Then I want to make money off corporate work so I can put it into the Scarlets and into making a higher budget short film, maybe even get a B list actor for a day, really put some cash into it and hope it goes places. That kind of thing I wouldn't do until I felt the script was perfect, so I'll probably write several different drama shorts and over a long period of time refine them and pick the best one, whatever I feel is most powerful and most useful as a calling card, the most "me," and I've had time to refine my style further, etc.

Much to be done, Scarlets or not! But I do want to get a few...

My calender is full of ongoing AV systems engineering projects. 10-12 hour workdays for the next three months at least. Then nodding out staring at the Reduser or Scarlet forum screens.:sosp:

I've spent most of my days hiding under the kitchen sink in the fetal position holding my breath and biting my nails, chanting "scaaaaarlet..... scaaaaaaaaaaarlet....."

:) Patience is a virtue I suppose.
