  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Rocket update...

is the red rocket expected to run much faster on snow leopard because the new OS will use the GPUs of the video card to accelerate CPU intensive processes, versus running on the current version of leopard?

Out of the box this is doubtful, but the SDK will probably be updated at some point to take advantage of OpenCL and hopefully later Direct X 11.

Got my deposit in.

I understand that specs are subject to change so don't come down too hard on me for asking a few questions.

1. Will Red Rocket be fully compatible with the higher resolution cameras in RED's pipeline? For example, how will RR handle 5K footage? I'd rather not spend nearly $5K on a PCIe card that might have a very limited useful lifespan.

2. Power requirements for the RR card? Some video cards require one, if not two additional power feed cables. Will the RR work with the higher end graphics display cards that also require additional power?

3. Can we get some idea as to the actual performance increase as installed in representative systems?

Okay, now that we've paid $5,000...do we get more information or even pictures? :-)

I'm still a bit unclear about what it can do as far as ouputting via HD-SDI. My hope is that there will be some type of realtime downconvert from 4k, so that we can immediately play back footage out the HD-SDI into a large HD Plasma. Obviously and even better, that Final Cut Pro will play back realtime 4K files out this device (or our Kona) and feed our monitors.

Thoughts?

What are some potential business opportunities with RED Rocket?

Transcoding services are the main thing? If they prefer to edit natively with r3d's instead of transcoding to ProResHQ, would you rent your RR to the production's tower temporarily or do you think they would just purchase their own?

Transcoding services...wondering what would be the most reasonable $/GB ratio. $1/GB? Thoughts?

OK, I guess I'd like some clarification on the PCIe power cable. I'm assuming this is the same thing as the power cable that accompanies many video cards that require more power than the PCIe slot alone can supply.

If so, why is it only listed for Mac users? Can we get power requirements / specs for the card so that those assembling a new PC will know if supplementary power is required? Or am I missing something?

PC power supplies already have this integrated. On the mac it's a special cable that does not ship with the macpro.

We'll post an update on the power numbers soon.

Does RED going to support Linux too ? I assume the driver comes from RED directly. Windows, Mac and Linux

I don't speak for Red, but yes, that is correct Chris. Same as the camera, pay the deposit to secure the order, then pay in full when it's ready to deliver.

None of us have paid in full yet.

i am assuming that paying a deposit would secure our 'place in line' and we don't have to pay in full until our rocket is ready to ship.....is this correct red team??

I paid in full.

Ok, so what did I just buy? Does it come with new software? What's it look like? What interface is between the card and the breakout box? I'm sort of wondering what the story's going to be in that $5,000 cardboard box. We know it does RED stuff in realtime [more to be enabled by the SDK as time goes on], but what's the trick/new workflow/etc. with the card?

I would have done the deposit if it were more than a few weeks away. Unless RED meant early July 2010, which is possible, :-), there wasn't a downside to just paying in full for me. To each their own.

I'm not sure if Brook was kidding or not. But yes, spending $5k on a product with a 5 line item description and no more is a little funny. I hope, since RED is supposedly only weeks away from shipping, that they could provide some more information for us early adopters.

Shoot, I was about to order the $1200 breakout box which would have been worthless to me if at the last minute, Jarred didn't clarify the information.

More info, please. :-)

Kevin

Sorry guys if you feel left in the dark... it's not intentional. There are some answers we just don't know yet ( like 5K speeds etc.) but we will answer questions we do know.. just ask away.

Hey, I can handle the dark for a couple weeks.

Jarred, can you answer that one question I posted, though? When we get this and hook it up, will it play realtime out to the monitors via HD-SDI somehow or are we having to wait until it's supported by software? In other words, what would play it out...Quicktime? One of RED apps?

Or is the main feature of this card, realtime playback, limited only to your computer monitor for right now?

Thanks.

Kevin

Yes, you can "Buy Now" (ie, pay in full now) or "Place a Deposit" (10% now, balance due when it is ready to ship). Both lock your place in queue, but "Buy Now" does shave a few days off of order processing times since we won't have to exchange emails to get balance paid when your number is up. Your choice - whatever works best for you.
