  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RELEASED: Beta Build 20 Firmware and RED ALERT!

On behalf of skim readers everywhere

Note: Download the companion version of RED Alert! (Build 20, Version 20.0.1 or later). TIFF, DPX and standalone QuickTime files rendered out of RED Alert! from Build 20 .R3D files will provide consistent color to the camera monitor ports.

Red Alert companion Version of Build 20 is the only app that can take advantage of the new Color Science. I assume this includes Red Rushes?

Existing version of RED QuickTime Codec, REDCINE and other post production tools should be compatible with Build 20 (Beta) .R3D files and QuickTime Reference files, but these applications will need to be updated before they will reflect the new Color Science. If using any of these tools, it should be expected that camera monitor and RED Alert! colors will not match to these applications, and you should re-white balance prior to performing editing or other color processing.

By updated I read this to be new versions to be released.

Note: Use of RED Alert! (Build 20, Version 20.0.1 or later) on pre-Build 20 camera firmware .R3D files can improve color purity and dynamic range and lower blue channel noise, however you should re-white balance prior to performing other color processing.

Old footage can processed to take advantage of the new Color Science but only through Red Alert Build 20.

4k anamorphic recording and monitoring????

Build 20

Build 20

4k anamorphic recording and monitoring????

Yes this is where the camera records a 1.2:1 aspect ratio image from an anamorphic lens, but the monitor path stretches that by 2:1 to show a 2.40:1 image.

I thought the new color science was all with the post debayer. It says that blue channel noise is reduced in the new build as well. Is that true? If so, does that mean that combined you get even less blue noise? Maybe I'm getting "color science" and less blue channel noise confused.

It means you will see the effects of the new colour science when you are monitoring on set. Both in the RED LCD and EVF plus the HDMI/HD-SDI outputs.

Stuart, can you tell us more about this preliminary implementation of 3D Master Slave feature?
Can we sync the shutter between the two cameras?
Does it resolve the issue of TC synchonization of the HD-SDI ouputs for use with the Transvideo monitors in 3D mode?

Thanks,

Arnaud

The syncing via the usb port is only for settings.
Shutter and timecode syncing still has to be done via genlock/timecode ports. Neither resolves the transvideo issue.

How do you mean? You want to see a histogram of the RAW when not viewing RAW?

Ineed. Since you get RAW then I want to know if I am clipping there. Then to gauge what you might do in post I might go to an other mode and set the ISO to what I think I might need to set it to and take a look, but in the end what you get is always the RAW so I want to know what goes on the negative.

But if you are in RAW view, you get a RAW histogram (albeit with gamma applied) and can see the absolute clipping there. I think a lot of people want their histogram based on redspace/REC709 when viewing in those modes to help place exposure. When in those modes you can still check RAW highlight clipping with the bar chart next to the traffic lights.

Correct, there was no Build 19 of firmware.

Guess this was to underline the monumental proportions of the update, right?

So, does this update give more similar color rendition between Rec709 and Redspace?
I find useful to use Redspace on low contrast and lesser exposed shots and Rec709 on high contrast shots, but a bit difficult to match color afterwards ... guess this update is going to improve this?

The colours in REC709 are much nicer now. Closer to redspace.

Deanan, Stuart, Brent,

Many thanks for the new release. It is looking really good.

I do have a question, though: it seems to me that clips rendered with the new versions of REDalert or REDline look substantially different from clips rendered with a previous version. Does that mean that anybody who has done the one-light in the previous REDAlert will have to re-do the one-light if they plan on rendering with the new version ?

Thanks again
and best wishes

Hans

You should certainly re-do the White Balance...

where does the 4k part come from?
