  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Your Top 5 Movies of the 2000s.. so far?

Little Miss Sunshine
Oldboy
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Donnie Darko
Caché

were some good ones, but there are more. Some people in here have a soppy, disgusting, blockbuster hollywood taste, but I won't call names. :)

History: Sophie Scholl (2005)

 Okay fine...I'll bite..

Some people also have a snobby, pretentious, "look-at-me-I-like-art-house-cult-movies-so-my-taste-in-movies-is-better-than-yours-and-you're-lucky-I-didn't-include-my-long-list-of-foreign-experimental-films-that-you've-never-heard-of-and-don't-bother-trying-to-find-them-on-IMDB" attitude.

:leaving:

Overly facetious comebacks aside...

I haven't posted my favs yet (it's too hard for me to pick 5). In fact I'd definitely belong in the group that has been spat upon. But that's okay, it's necessary.. We need the film nerds AND the film geeks to keep this art alive. You know, all we geeks care about are cool special effects, popcorn, T&A, IMAX, Megan Fox, lightsabers, more T&A, and spaceships...and all nerds want to see are boring, culturally inquisitive, boring, humanistic, philosophically stimulating, boring, and unconventional films with accents in the title. Gotta have both though!

One things for sure though; put me down for a tall order (3 to be exact) of Rings.

Ähem.. The posted ones were all very well known. Caché might be a bordercase.

I'm not that sure if you would find much filmgeeks in Europe that like your given description. :) and well, what is boring? For me it's a bad script. The question is if you're pleased if one is fooling it with MONEY or not.

They are well known of course (but indeed have achieved cult status no doubt); but that doesn't mean if you were so inclined, you couldn't list unheard of ones correct? Hehe

You're right; most of these film geeks I spoke of are indeed American bred. :patriot:

For the typical film geek, boring is pretty easy to diagnose; we can't withstand more than a minute of film time without being dazzled somehow. So if the film fails to succeed on that level, its boring. Need more pointless scenes of action and sex.

In all seriousness, I just don't see the point of knocking someone else's taste in movies. If it inspires them, then thats whats important.

The problem with threads like this one is that there a few categories that we should establish: movies that have inspired you on a personal level, movies you deem important to society, and movies you feel have achieved a new level of cinematic storytelling; the latter two being more geared for discussion than the former. With these three categories, we can already establish what is merely subjective, and what can be objective discussion. So if someone is effected by a Hollywood popcorn fest, I wouldn't call judgment on their taste in movies as a whole. That's basically why I felt I needed to come at you like I did. No harm intended...really!

Anyways, here are my top 5 movies that have inspired me personally in the last 9 years, and in no particular order:

No Country for Old Men
Lord of the Rings (all 3 as one)
Children of Men
The Aviator
Pirates of Caribbean Dead Man's Chest...jk
Collateral

Sure, but I feel borred as well by many as well, some Wim Wenders stuff or Kitano stuff really crosses the border of art to boredom. I like a nice mix of entertainment and deep thoughts. Some of the best examples are Oldboy and Little Miss Sunshine.

However, entertainment doesn't mean special effect fests for me. I just wonder a bit what this movie geeks who want to be filmmakers want to tell the world new and original. And given they won't have access to effects money but a major interest in that type of movies..

The Damned United.

[Not sure if this one got a US release]

Sheen gave an epic performance.

I think Juno needs an honourable mention somewhere; I'd certainly opt for it over Little Miss Sunshine which felt like an unbearably long setup to a single joke at times.

If we include doco, then In the Shadow of the Moon has to take the top spot.

In no particular order:

No Country for Old Men
Children of Men
Diving Bell and the Butterfly
There Will Be Blood
28 Days Later

These are just off the top of my head. Great lists from everyone else though.

My list goes to 11 (in no special order):

1. Amelie
2. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
3. 10 Items or Less
4. Anchorman
5. Sin City
6. The Darwin Awards
7. Pineapple Express
8. The Orphanage
9. Fido
10. Flakes
11. Super Troopers

They are considered favorites for me based on how hard I laughed, cried, was creeped out, wanted to watch it again, or couldn't get it out of my head - nothing to do with technical achievements, SPFX, etc.

In the Mood for Love
Amelie
Lord of the Rings
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
No Country for Old Men

Runners-up:
Gladiator
O Brother Where Art Thou
The Man Who Wasn't There
Road to Perdition
Adaption
The Incredibles
Pan's Labyrinth
Shawn of the Dead
Diving Bell and the Butterfly
There Will be Blood
Munich
Master and Commander
Catch Me if You Can
A.I.

Hmmm..
LOTR
Children of men
Pan's Labyrinth & the Hellboy's (mostly 2)
Firefly/Serenity (can't really separate)
Fight club
Wall-E

Fight Club - phenomenal and Finchers best !

and dubious judgement of what is in the 2000's

If I'm not mistaken, Fight Club was released in 1999. It would have definitely made my top 5 though.

You are not mistaken and I almost mentioned this fact too but I am sure Evin is a righteous dude and we should let him have it!

Wish I had remembered Fight Club and put it on my list instead of Sympathy for Mr Vengeance.

1) Kenny
2) The Nugget
3) Crackerjack
4) Slumdog Millionaire
5) Borat

I'm seeing a bleak picture here. As in, most of these films wouldn't be in any top list if the crop was better.

The only one I'll vouch for is Amelie. Several I haven't seen, but I haven't wanted to see them all that much based on trailers, etc.

Hahah - thanks for the laugh... that was funny. :-)

OK, I agree - let's include Fight Club! It's that good.

I don't know how I forgot about Amelie... I would say it replaces The Fountain in my top 5.

...Ask me next week, my top 5 picks would probably change anyway. If we opened up our choices to the 70's, 80's and 90's, then I'd probably give a mostly different list.

Most of these have already been said, but. . .

Children of Men
There Will Be Blood
The Royal Tenenbaums
The Fountain
The New World

What seems crazy is it that it doesn't feel like 9 years have passed since Fight Club. The years fly by too fast ... scary.

I don't know how I forgot about Amelie...
I don't know how I forgot about it either. Jeunets best by far. Great seeing Kassovitz (hero of mine) on the screen instead of directing.

A little more thought put into it but still nowhere near enough. Too many movies mentioned here I simply haven't seen yet.

No Country For Old Men
The Notebook
Band Of Brothers (if LOTR trilogy counts as one then why not)
Anchorman
LOTR Trilogy
John Adams
Michael Clayton
The Bourne Identity
Catch Me If You Can
Walk The Line
The Departed
Little Miss Sunshine
Munich
Children of Men
Spanglish
Hotel Rwanda
V For Vendetta
Crash
In Burges
The Hangover
Donnie Darko
Gladiator

Docs are movies too!

Born into Brothels
King of Kong
Dog Town and Z Boys
