  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I own a GH-1 and MKii and this is how RED can truly seal the deal

Kholi, thats overlooking other huge differences such as still vs cine lense, proper audio, remote options and the list goes on.

Cine Lenses -- GH-1 can do that. next

Proper Audio -- You need to add money to the Scarlet (so far I think) to do that. You can do the same with the GH-1 or MKii. next

Remote Options -- add money for these.

Now, if you had said HD-SDI out, that's a difference. So long as it has it built in because you can get HD-SDI out of the MKii by getting an HDMI to HD-SDI converter.

So I think in the end, is it JUST the RAW that'll cost 3K more to have?

That's RAW 3k, at whatever fps you want, not what you're told you need. And no nasty subsampling artifacts, and false colors from the aliasing. Vastly faster rolling shutter too. There's a lot of things different in a camera engineered for parity of video and stills.

Let's see what Canon announces in July- August (Their usual press conference is during that time frame). Thy have the sensor technology, and if the rumors are true that they will apple the Sensor to the XL line, and if they keep the current pricing, that'll be the true challenger. This cam,I'm sure, will be much more than the 5d markII. They typically release products on the september-October time frame, so it should be even sooner than Scarlet's release. I'm sure things like better codec, better rolling shutter and even VFR will be present in this camcorder to diferentiate from the 5d.

That should be the Scarlet's real threat.

I'd like to think that they'd tackle a faster rolling shutter, but the information so far is not promising... The 5d2 only looks as "good" as it does, wrt rolling shutter, we assume by looking at the artifacts which point to line skipping, and such line skipping would give you a 3x improvement in rolling shutter. For a stills camera, rs is irrelevant, but for a full frame, all the pixels, digital cinema camera, it's vital. To me, that points to a whole new chip design being needed, not an already designed stills sensor.

Ergonomics: No EVF on 5D, LCD not orientable, controls placed for still shooting not motion shooting. For good motion camera ergonomics look at a Sony or Panasonic 2/3" over the shoulder style ENG/EFP camera. Properly rigged they balance on the shoulder with all relevant controls for operating the camera and lens at hand without having to look at them once one is familiar with the layout . EVF or LCD is orientable to any angle for ease of use with high or low shot placements. The camera has enough weight for steady hand held shots without needing image stabilizers. With camera balanced on the shoulder and both hands on the lens for operating, the EVF and body resting against the head provide added stabilizing points.
GH1 is better in this respect with an orientable LCD, but too small and light for stable extended hand held shooting and still not easily adapted to a comfortably balanced and handily controlled shoulder rig.
Red modular system can be ergonomically configured anyway you want it, like a still camera if that suits or like an ENG camera if that is preferable depending on the demands of the production. LCD and EVF are not only orientable, they can be mounted in any location to suit any shooting situation, above, below, or to either side of the body. One can mount an ENG style broad range servo zoom and shoulder rig, or a cine style focus assist and rail system, or a compact still lens.

GH1 seems like a such an interesting cam for its price point, in fact I ordered one today but I might just flip it before years end.
Hoping scarlet is a lifer.

duration, sound n timecode

duration, sound n timecode

Hi Kohli,

Read your thread. I am thinking of buying a GH1, can you please tell how much duration can the GH1 shoot on the available memory cards?
How can I record quality sound? what additional gadgets need to be attached for recording sound?
If the camera does not generate a timecode, how can it be sorted during the edit? I will have to move the offline edit from my home computer to an online machine in a studio.

30 Minutes per 4GB, no limit on US recording so long as you have the space

Zoom H4N + Boom is what we're all doing

Slate and reference sound has worked just fine. Camera records sound.

Must see these video shots on Panasonic GH1 & Hot Rod PL Deluxe - Body Mount Style! by Illya Friedman:

"So today I realized that the Panasonic Lumix GH1 together with the Hot Rod PL (Deluxe) make probably the lightest,
easiest and most flexible body-mount style rig on the planet.

Super easy to use- no effort was involved in this quick video. If I had actually planned it out and adjusted appropriately,
I could have done something cool, instead I just look like a goof."

Tom,

Canon 5DMKII is OK FF35 DSLR one of the best in its class

but when it comes HD video 1080 24p combined with many attractive lens mounts like PL or Leica M then Panasonic Lumix GH1 is a winner.

For example a wide angle shots with the fastest lens available:

1. Canon 5D MKII body Price:$ 2,699.95 + Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM Autofocus Lens Price:$ 1,689.00 + Total price: $ 4388.95

2. Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 Digital Camera (Black) with 14-140mm Lens Price:$ 1,499.95 (take off this slow 14-140mm kit lens)

+ Novoflex LEICA M to MICRO FOUR THIRDS CAM ADPTR Price:$ 269.95

+ Leica 21mm f/1.4 Summilux-M Aspherical Manual Focus Price:$ 5,995.00

Total price = $ 7764.9

or

3. Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 Digital Camera (Black) with 14-140mm Lens Price:$ 1,499.95 (take off this slow 14-140mm kit lens)

+ HotRod PL mount for Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 (price still unknown???)

+ Arri/Carl Zeiss 14mm T1.3 Master Prime lens Price: about $ 23.000

or

4. Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 Digital Camera (Black) with 14-140mm Lens Price:$ 1,499.95 (take off this slow 14-140mm kit lens)

+ Panasonic 25mm f/1.4 Micro Four Thirds Lens for Panasonic Digital SLR Cameras Price:$1,099.95

Total price: $ 2599.90

So Canon 5D MKII can't get faster wide angle lens then 24mm f/1.4 and also can't get PL mount properly

installed at the body to get maybe the fastest wide angle MP 14mm T1.3.

What you could choose now?

Wait a second. How wide is the Leica 21mm f/1.4 really going to be on a GH1 once you calculate the crop factor? What's the FOV compared to the Canon 24mm F/1.4 on a FF35 5D2?

Also, our friend Pawel has shown that PL mounts are possible on these Canon cameras, and I believe the MP 14mm is F/1.2!

To top it all off, the compression on the GH1 looks awful to me. I think the 5D2 has nearly double the bandwidth, and much better low-light sensitivity.

A 4/3 sensor is 18mm wide and a FF35 sensor is 36mm wide, so that's a 2X difference -- so the 21mm on the GH1 looks like a 42mm on the Canon. In other words, you'd have to find a 12mm lens for the GH1 to match the FOV of the 24mm on the Canon.

I'd say the main thing in the GH1's favor is that it does 24 fps (maybe not really an issue for a time-lapse shooter like you Tom.)

David,

exactly but could be another option like a

Arri/Carl Zeiss Ultra Prime lens for PL mount 12mm T1.9 12mm with horizontal angle of view 90°

for an ANSI Super 35 or horizontal angle of view 45° for GH1 micro 4/3 sensor size.

There are very strong rumors that Canon is busy working on a 24p update.

But yeah, if you need to deliver at 24p now, that's a major consideration.

It is also rumored that the Canon 60D, which will be announced soon, will shoot 1080/24p.

The difference between 4/3 (18mm wide) and S35 (24mm wide) is only 1.3X.

David,

correct and then Arri/Carl Zeiss Ultra Prime lens for PL mount 12mm T1.9 12mm with horizontal angle of view 90°

for an ANSI Super 35 would be about 70° horizontal angle of view for GH1 micro 4/3 sensor size that is a bit less wider then Canon 24mm @ FF35 (73°44').

To repeat again:

"Field of View is 1/2 that of FF35mm cameras: Micro 4/3 cameras have a much smaller format than FF35mm cameras.
A 50mm lens via adapter on your Micro 4/3 camera will still be a 50 mm lens, BUT its field of view will be halved down the field of view of a 100mm lens.
A 25mm adapted lens has the field of view of a FF35mm format 50mm lens, etc."

What we need is a 16mm f/1.4 FF35 prime lens!

It doesn't exist.

Optical engineers said that is impossible at FF35mm image circle to achieve that speed with any acceptable optical value...

Or I'm totally wrong...???!!!
