One of my goals at NAB was to find the best Monitors for post production. It a subject that has been touched on here several times but I was still unsure of the way to go.

While at the reduser party I was visiting with Peter Majtan, Steve Gibby and Jay Kelly and posed the question, What is the best post monitor that won't require a second mortgage. Peter, confidently recommended the Panasonic 11 series. He had replaced all his monitors with these and even assured me that if I didn't like it, he would buy it (not that I would hold him to it).

I visited Panasonic the next morning and spoke with Michael Miller. Their specialist in the 11 series. This is a 1080P monitor that is available in 8 and 10 bit. The 10 bit requires an extra attachment.

I tried to PM Peter to verify the model on the Plasma screen but his private storage is full. Wondering if anyone has any experience with the 11 series?

Wanting to order but want to make sure I'm on the right path.

Thanks for any help.

Many people have experience with the Series 11 plasmas, because they're used in essentially every major post house in Los Angeles. They've become (along with some Pioneer units, although those are no longer manufactured) the de facto replacement for CRT's. LCD solutions have largely been rejected due to problems with the blacks and viewing angle issues.

You should be aware, however, that all of these installations are calibrated using very high end meters, and calibrated on a very regular basis.

Hey Frank,

Yeah that was a productive little meeting wasn't it?! I'm looking into the same thing myself.

Checked with Cineform and they said they will be supporting Dual Link HD-SDI very soon because of it's use for 3d.

Thanks Peter!

Thanks for the heads up. I'll look into it.

Yes it was, Very productive. I was surprised that the price has gone down a bit since Peter purchased his. The dual HD-SDI add-on now costs more than the 50" screen. Go figure.

Looked at the Panasonic Monitors after a discussion with Peter Putman (ROAM Consulting - http://www.hpaonline.com/mc/page.do?sitePageId=42179), he pointed me to the monitors and had created a custom profile for the monitors. The Panasonic series which as pointed out are now used in almost every posthouse

Hey Clark

Has Peter made that profile available to the general public or just the lucky(paying) few?

BTW Clark. I've got a video of Garrett Brown almost running over your toes on his segway at NAB. I have never uploaded or hosted video so I don't know how to show it.

heya Frank, don't know for sure. The profile was on the monitors displayed at the Panasonic booth as a preset "default" but most of the time in the booth they were set for the viewing conditions.... so unless you asked they were set on kinda of "vivid" profile.

Garrett was a madman driving that segway around..... Was he going forward or backward at the time? Since he spent most of the time watching the monitor... his driving was dangerous for those not keeping him in sight and prepared to jump out of the way (LOL).

Followup - I asked Michael Millar/Panasonic about the status of Peter Putnam's profiles for the Plasma displays and they are not installed - BUT.... he could make them available as a good starting point for setting up....

here's his response:

"There is no preset to Pete Putnam's presets. Of course I can provide
you with the settings he ended up with, but the proper way to set it up
would be to calibrate the panel in the room you will be using it in.
Every panel has a tiny bit of variation and room light does make a
difference, so setting it up in your environment is the best practice.
But I will be glad to give you the setting we were using, it will be a
good starting point. -Mike"

Thank Clark. I appreciate your help.
How would I go about getting the settings they are using? It would be a great starting point.

PS, I am sending you a PM on a separate matter

this board is so expensive i'm wondering if i want a monitor to use with red rocket should i just get something else instead of the 11 series? is there another great monitor for the price of the 11 series plus the hdsdi board?

I'm not sure if I'm answering your question right, but any HD-SDI board is going to be about the same cost.

As for calibration on the low-cost side there is the Spyder 3 colorimeter. This will help get you pretty close. If however you have multiple different monitors (LCD's & plasma) in the same room, there will have to be some compromises made to one to get it to match the other(s). This is something an average user can dive into but I would recommend hiring a professional.

You could use an HDSDI to HDMI converter. But last time I checked the 11 series only has 8-bit HDMI input modules which would make it interesting to take a look at the new NeoPDP panels in the consumer line that have 10-bit HDMI inputs.

Wha? I thought the 11 series had HDMI 1.3a inputs and supported extended color / 10bit. If not, then I guess the SDI module is the way to go.

The current consumer models all support HDMI 1.3 'deep color'.

I'm talking about the 11 pro series. According to Panasonics spec sheet the PF11 series has two optional HDMI input boards: TY-FB8HM and TY-FB10HMD. Both are a couple of years old since they also work with older series. The specs don't mention HDMI 1.3 support and the guys at avsforums.com suggest that both models indeed don't do 10-bit.

So until anyone finds an HDMI input module for the 50pf11 that supports HDMI 1.3 I'm assuming there isn't one.

Anyone interested in consumer 12 series, get at least G10.
NEO PDP, blacks 0,03cd/m2, full 1080p motion resolution and additional settings for calibration.
