  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

This is going to be so sick. I can't wait till its up and running. Lake Forest is nice and everything but it has one problem, its in California. The move to Las Vegas is going to be very good for Red. Plus maybe future Red events during NAB will be held at the compound...one can only hope.

I don't think any of us can really grasp the magnitude of the opportunities the future holds for redusers...

It means that Jim is going to start a new Hollywood out there. Maybe a place where good movies are made.:thumbsup:

Nice to see Jim dream. And a logical dream at that.

Below is a Google Earth snapshot of the area. The only thing I'd say they would be lacking is green and winter. Maybe we can get Jim to put a second studio in my neck of the woods to compensate. :) I believe this area was once seriously considered as a spot by others in the past. Lots of film/vid people up here, though sadly many gravitate to anything Hollywood as the way, or are merely pipe dreamers. :couch:

I'm honestly surprised we don't see more people try to do what Jim is doing here. It's expensive, but the type of venture likely to see huge tax deferments and great assistance from nearly any local political entity, especially in an economic time like this. I would imagine just about any multi-millionare (and there are more out there than you realize) could make some plans, phone calls, and get such a thing started. But I guess the fact that most of those people seem to ship their money overseas to avoid paying taxes, instead of actually doing something with it, is what separates Jim from so many others in his tax bracket.

RED should also consider getting some room with Plymouth rock, cause "apparently" hollywood is moving to Massachusetts

Uhhhhhh.... right. The same way it was "moving" to Toronto, New Orleans, New York, Vancouver, Orlando, Utah, North Carolina and about a hundred other places.

I don't know why people seem to think an entire industry with a very deep infrastructure consisting of over 100,000 working professionals that is very well entrenched is suddenly going to pick up and do a wholesale move to someplace else that doesn't have any degree of trained workforce, acceptable weather year round, or any real knowledge of what it takes to create and finish high end production work on tight deadlines. It hasn't happened in the past, regardless of the financial enticements, and it's not going to happen in the foreseeable future. That's not to say that regional production centers can't get some work. They can, and do. But the industry as a whole is not going anywhere, not when all of the companies that run it and most of the talent it depends on are in greater Los Angeles. And that applies ten fold for post production.

And, by the way, a surefire way to make sure it doesn't happen is to begin to refer to a place as Hollywood_East_North_South_etc.
 
That's a very good point Mmost. I think one of the mistakes that many of these cities make (mine does it as well) is try to be like Hollywood. Do all they can to cater the industry to get them to move some of their work there, as if that's the only way it can be done.

It's ironic, considering we all agree that the Hollywood industry wastes money like the federal government, and that digital video is/was supposed to revolutionize and equalize the industry. Red perhaps most of all. Granted, this "revolution" is more talked about than practical, but none the less has hardly happened in many ways people said it would.

I'm hoping than when Jim and Red get this studio built they can look at the entire picture with fresh eyes. Different ways to plan shooting, different ways of workflow, staffing, management etc. Instead of just hiring a zillion union workers to peel gaff tape and pull cables on gargantuan productions that may or may not be any good, only this time shot in Vegas instead of LA.
