  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I own a GH-1 and MKii and this is how RED can truly seal the deal

S35 Sized ssensor OR, if you feel the need to crush the competition, Full Frame sensor with S35 frame guides.

I'll pay 3 to 3.5k for that camera body happily.

Optional Accessories:

Audio Module
Whatever you want

The rest is trivial to me and this would end the stop-gap swiftly. The other guys can have 8,000K and all that good stuff.

After shooting serious work with both the GH-1 and my new MKii I can see more people jumping on an MKii or GH-1 and totally forgetting about Scarlet until they can afford it. And when they can afford it, they'll probably just rent someone elses.

Put this camera out now and it'll kill the options.

Just my thoughts.

Great post Kholi. You nailed all the points. The landscape has changed so much even since the last Scarlet update.

I have faith in RED that they're truly steps ahead of the competition... and I hope that their manufacturing status is ahead of where we think it is.

GH1 is interesting due to its features. EVF, manual exposure, autofocus. I like the 4/3 format too.
But I will wait for a 2/3" Scarlet over either of these.
I personally don't much care about ultra shallow DOF and 2/3" is capable of very nice 16mm like DOF flexibility. Based on the few sample shots from the lab prototype posted here, as well as footage from RED 1, 2k and 1080p scaled from 3k raw will be of much better quality than either of the still cams can produce and you can get it at any speed you want from time lapse rates to 120fps continuous. Worth the wait for me.

GH1 isn't too bad for jello. Definitely looking forward to raw acquisition over HDV or AVC(h.264).

After scarlet ships I can't see anyone considering h264 or AVCHD as acquisition formats for any serious motion work. GH1 and 5DM2 will valuable as still only and Canon and Pana will most likely be dropping new cams to compete.

jello and h264 are two drawbacks you didn't mention

Jello on GH-1 is damned near close to RED. Spoken from experience.

H.264 can be converted for editing, so no big deal there either. It's not really going to make or break any project that's worth salt anyway.

Kenn - That's my thought as well.

David -- Just trying to put out a thought, but not saying this is how it should be. I totally think 2/3" sensor is fine. Would prefer an S35 as it's not too shallow and pretty much what we're all accustomedtoo anyway. If Full Frame is a must then I'll take Academy Guides.

I think one of the key battle grounds is going to be price point.
Remember RED dropped their prices unexpectedly back Nov 13, or was it Dec 3?
(I always get those two big announcements mixed up)

s35 or full frame sensor? Seriously? Let's not forget that most professional cameras between $15, 000 and $150, 000 have 2/3" sensors, so just $7000 for a s35 camera that can shoot video at up to 72fps (without skipping lines or any of those ugly hacks the SLR video modes use) is dirt cheap...

As for those (including me) who don't have the cash for a s35mm version, the video quality, resolution and frame rates the 2/3" can do will absolutely smash the competition anyway, and if 2/3" at 1080p is enough for George Lucas to shoot Attack of the Clones (budget $115 Million), then I'm totally ecstatic about 2/3" 3K at up to 120fps...

Just out of curiosity, I need a new SLR. How is the GH-1 as a still camera?

Ian,
Go with the 5D2...it is an amazing still camera, and as a bonus you get 1080p motion. My 5D2 never leaves my side.

Kholi,

Those cameras do make some pretty pictures on the surface do to the MPEG-4 AVC /H.264 but they do have a few draw-backs:

AVCHD is a 15 frame Long GOP (long group of pictures) which means at 24p you only have 2 full/true frames.

AVCHD: Chroma sampling is only 4:2:0

Both of those facts can make an editor or a colorist’s life very unhappy

Will people shoot them anyway? … yes

My point is the more complex the project the more of a pain those draw-backs become. But with enough money any draw-back goes away. Lol

Be well man

I like the micro 4/3 format of the GH1. It lends itself to inexpensive lens mount adapters for cine lenses and there is very good glass available for 4/3 too.
I recently bought a 70's vintage Taylor Hobson 8-24mm f1.6 wide zoom after seeing a couple of stills from it shot on a G1 with a c mount adapter. There are quite a few M4/3 enthusiasts shooting 16mm primes on G1's. The sample definitely convinced me that high quality vintage 16mm lenses will perform very well on Scarlet Cinema. Downside is more competition and higher prices for good vintage lenses.
We just committed to a very high end gallery exhibition in Greenwich Connecticut for my wife Suzy's oil paintings. She is easily among the very top master portrait artists in the country. The exhibition is in September, so no play money available before then. :( Otherwise I might pick up a GH1 and c mount adapter to try out some of the lenses I have collected over the last few months.
You can check out Suzy's work at www.suzyhartfineart.com
The exhibition will be on board the Sea Fair, a $40m luxury yacht purpose built for art exhibitions www.expoships.com
I'm really proud of her and her work give her as much support as I can.

5d2/D3x/1ds3 is definitely going to be better, but in that kind of price range the Rebel T1i, 50d, or D90 all shoot better stills and you get access to tons of grat used glass that isn't out there for 4/3 yet

Interesting comment that last as one of the big draws for the G1/GH1 is it's capability to use just about every piece of glass out there given its exceptionally short back flange distance. Adaptors for most mounts exist, and the camera manually focusses extremely well given the 10x zoom it activates for you to achieve focus with.

As to 'better', well that depends on what you are looking for. Noise is going to be margnially higher than APS-C from about ISO 800 on up. DR is basically the same. Resolution is basically the same. Compactness and weight are significantly different.

To my knowledge there aren't yet any mounts for u4/3 except 4/3 to u4/3 so if you want to be using other glass on a GH1 you're going to have to be okay with no autofocus or auto-exposure control. I'm not denigrating the GH1, I'm contemplating getting one myself, but the other cameras in the price range have better low-light performance. You just have to consider the compromises that are going into it if you're buying it primarily as a still camera. If you're getting it to do some substantial motion work, than you're pretty much down it it and the 5d2.

D70S quality. They're on the same level. So I guess not too terrible but definitely not the best.

Correct. Depends if you are looking for AF/AE - most of the people I have seen fascinated with the G1/GH1 are using it for older manual lenses, or using other make lenses as manual lenses.

I think making functional adaptors to both Nikon and Canon mounts would be a great bonus to the format, and apart from competitive limitations see no reason why they couldn't be made. There's probably even enough space to fit a ring motor to drive the older lenses without motors in..
