We have just released new versions of the Canon library, and MAC/PC applications. This library includes all of the fixes rolled out throughout the many 19_ releases... The application allows for sending lens test reports back to us for evaluation, so we can expand our lens test set from the fifty lenses we own to every lens owned by all of our customers. The applications can also phone home to tell you if there is a new software release, and facilitate the upgrade. All of this stuff is opt in. We send no data back home without permission.

To encourage people to use this feature "Send Lens Report" located in the "Help" menu, prizes are in order. When we reach 1000 unique lens reports we will draw a lottery (one entry per unique report, two unique winners):
  • free Impero, for immediate delivery
  • free Birger PL mount, first production unit
A unique report is defined as a unique lens (manufacturer, focal length, speed, mark#) and a specific serial number of mount.

BUTTONS
*******
There are three buttons {top, middle, bottom} and two button press durations {short, long}.

Top-Long: Move iris to wide open, initialize iris
Top-Short: Move iris incremental 1/4 stop open
Bottom-Short: Move iris incremental 1/4 stop closed
Bottom-Long: Move iris closed

Middle-Long: Do a complete focus calibration (5 to 11 seconds)
Middle-Short: Do a quick focus calibration* (1 to 2 seconds typical)

Top+Bottom: Initialize Iris
Top+Middle: toggle lens manual focus ring on/off (i.e. 85mm/1.2)
Bottom+Middle: "servo-safe-mode", eventually I will explain...

When a lens is first attached, a top-long and a middle-long button press are needed to get the calibrations to happen on both focus and iris.

*Quick focus calibration simply finds the stops on the lens, and returns to the current knob position. This allows for eliminating any drift that might occur over time with less than fantastic lenses.

19y issue ?

19y issue ?

Not entirely sure what is up with 19y ... installed it and worked fine with 24/1.4 lens. Mounted a 70-200/2.8 and the RedOne went into TimeLapse mode (and the 70-200 is not detected ... buttons on mount do not work ... BEI Device Interface reports no lens mounted).

Reverted back to 19x library and all is well ! Needless to say, test before going out in the field ... and by the look of things, test all the lenses as only one seemed to pull this trick on me. As I'm in the middle of a personal shoot, had to revert to 19x ...

Sent email to Erik via the new BEI Device > Help > Submit A Bug Report ...

David, did you plug the mount cable in the lower Aux port? I believe that one defaults to timelapse. Maybe it will work if you plug it into the upper one? Just a thought. These settings can be changed in the menus.

Sure & thanks ... in my setup, I use lower port for Birger and I set GPIO-B to 'record'. I use the top port for external triggering as and when and configure GPIO-A as required. I can assure you that with the system all setup with 19x all is fine, 19y I get this 'feature' (and only with the 70-200/2.8 IS).

Folk at Birger have received my bug report (via their latest BEI interface) and are looking into the problem.

All I can suggest is that we use the new reporting feature (error or no error) ! The more feedback Birger gets, the more stable the solution will be in the long term

Working in this release:

EF 50mm f/1.8 II (identifies as Mk I and can't learn distance stops, but works fine)
EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-5.6 USM
EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
EF 100mm f/2

NOT working (used to work in 19x):

EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM

This lens starts recording and also times out on BEI (on MacBook Pro, haven't tried PC). It also appears to auto-stop down to some other value than wide open.

One suggestion I'd make for the bug reports/lens database is to have it communicate directly with Birger server and not need email, as my email system is separate from my work laptop.

HTH Erik.

Thanks,

Paul

also problems with the canon 17-55 f2.8

also problems with the canon 17-55 f2.8

i can fix it mostly by setting the stabilizer off and setting MF on,
and after the lens is recognized setting back the stabilizer on, and AF on.
i also need the impero to do a recalibrate to get it working on the impero.
also iris on this lens with the impero is erratic. need to use the knobs on the mount.

If your application reports "Boot SW Rev" of 44, you need to send your mount in for an upgrade. GPIO ports occasionally trigger on lens attachment with the old camera adapters. I think there are only about 20 more of these old camera adapters out in the wild. We have plenty in stock to handle the upgrades.

19Z will be released tonight or tomorrow morning. I will post when it is up, or you can check yourself using the new applications. This version should fix the issues with lens attachment.

SEND TEST REPORTS! It allows quick fixes to be deployed, like this.

Did i miss something??!!

Did i miss something??!!

Is it just me, or did Erik announce a BIRGER PL MOUNT as one of the prizes for his little contest?!

So now Birger is going to allow PL mount lenses as well?

SPILL THE DAMN BEANS ERIK! What gives?!

:yikes:

Hi Erik,

that's one of our mounts (the early ones). I was under the impression we were waiting for the Imperos to come in before you would ask for them back and send us the new kit. Has this changed or should I wait for your upgrade email?

Thanks for the info, will try 19z tomorrow.

Just a guess Jay, but I imagine Birger probably has designed something similar to the IMS such that there's a part with the /i pin cable which lives on the camera and then you swap out either the EOS or PL portion without needing to constantly thread the /i pin cable into slots etc with the potential for crimps etc. Would make sense and be a hot seller I'd imagine.

Only guessing though.....

This is the basic idea. Everyone that has a camera adapter from us that an i/data cable plugs into, already owns the base of the system... if yours does not take the i/cable it will be upgraded next week.

Will the collimation be the same for both mount, or it will still be required to be updated while swapping the mount?

Great news Erik, thanks. I don't know about your timeline for the PL portion, but if possible I'd love to buy it now since our mount needs to be sent back anyway to swap for the new version. One shipment to cover Impero, revised EOS mount and PL mount would be sweet and save on shipping costs. But I understand if this isn't possible.

Cheers,

Paul
