I really really would like to be able to shoot to a CF card, dump the CF card, then reinsert said used & full CF card back into the Red with the option of a one button re-format. It could be a menu item setup beforehand by the user that wants fast reformats to save time and menu boggling.

I personally like to format my CF cards within the Red One to save headaches for possible corruption later on. Plus by reformatting in the Red, it allows for easy sequential numbering of magazines. This also has provided a good checksum to prevent accidental erasure within the offloading computer.

Having the option for a one buttom formatter would save I & others a lot of time..It sounds simple but it's actually quite important as I waste a lot of time as it is going through the menu system each time.

Rock on

You don't want to make it too easy though, otherwise you'd have people accidentally formatting cards left and right.

One thing you can do is assign the format menu to one of the A / B / C buttons on the back. Just go into the menu you want to assign and keep the button A B or C pressed for a few seconds.
It's not as fast as what you're suggesting, but it saves some time.

What would be cool is if the camera automatically formatted any empty unformatted media as soon as it's inserted. This way, all you'd have to do is delete everything that's on the card before unmounting it from your computer...

I agree with Jonathan that a "one button format" could be quite dangerous.

Except when you have photos from your Canon camera stored on there and then you lose them because of the auto-format function not seeing Red data and thinking it empty.

Not saying this would happen to me, but I think when it comes to the potential to lose expensive shot data I'd rather err on the side of taking a couple more seconds, just as a last "are you REALLY sure?" kind of sanity check.

Well yes, a confirmation screen is always safer, I agree.

Just delete the .profile files after you download the card. The Red will say the card is unformatted and, with one click on OK, it will offer to format it for you.

The added benefit of this method it that your footage is still safely on the card until you format it in camera, just in case you discover you didn't download it properly.

This was brought up before when the camera was first released and I think one of the firmware versions would auto-format a card it believed to be blank. Personally I just don't like that because accidents can happen. Best way is to make the process idiot proof.

How do you set that up?

I always have to go to System > Format > OK > Wait > OK.

I also would love a auto-format option if the card is empty, with no GUI interference. Has happened a couple of times that I lost crucial seconds because the card was not formatted.

Really ? Well then I need to try that, I thought that was no onger the case on the new firmwares...
Thanks for the tip ! :)

Agree.

And why not a Smart Handle:
With two buttons, record and format.
Next to each other... Same color and very sensitive to the touch.

If you never screw up accidentaly means you're smart, hence the name!

Thanks Brent. I will check that out.

I think it would be cool if we had the option for a quick format button but it would be something that would have to be enabled every time you turn the camera on. When the camera shuts off, it goes back to default. The risktakers would be warned beforehand upon enabling the auto format button feature everytime.

Yeah right, I'd rather have quick format which I have to turn on every time I change the battery or switch the camera off, than just click through two more menus.

Sounds like a useful feature to me :P.

Usability anyone?

OK guys. What I am suggesting either works or it doesn't. No shades of gray.
The debates on this site are interesting but black is still black, white is still white.

I am really sorry that I do not own a camera so I can't test it, but the last time I did this it worked.

One step that we could lose without any security issues would be:

Please remove the full-screen confirmation page when a card has been formatted. Why not just go to the ready-to-shoot page, and only give a message if there should have been a problem.

Would remove at least one step from the equation.
