Edit
The Readers i had were 400 not 800
my ignorance of their exsistence
based on what camera stores carry ; )
Let all others be warned and only buy firewire 800

We all have or know of someone who has an iPod with a dead hard drive. Of course you can simply buy another drive but you're back to the same power-hungry, failure-prone, fragile rotating media. Instead, upgrade your iPod to use Flash Memory. Sure a hard drive can hold all 30,000 of your songs, but even a 4GB card can hold over 24 hours of music - I usually change out songs often enough that I don't need to carry 20+ Gig of songs at all times.

The cards just need to be formatted on the camera first.

Have you tried other readers? You may have a reader issue. Other systems? You may have a system issue. I have two of the Lexar Pro FW800 readers and they both read the 16GB cards just fine on any system I've used them on. An older SanDisk USB2 reader and an older Lexar FW400 reader do not like the 16GB cards. The CF slot built into my 30" Dell monitors (connect via USB2) won't read the 16GB cards either.

The Lexar readers should be fine, but... Are you connecting other FW devices to the Mac at the same time or using an A/B cable (connecting to a FW400 port)?

How old are your cards? There was a point 2 or 3 months back where RED updated the firmware for the 16GB cards to increase compatibility. I know that my cards have the updated firmware and they do work just fine with the Lexar readers. Perhaps this could be something to look into...

So can we please post the solution to this? is it a one off issue or any others having a problem reading 16gb red cf's?

Uhm.., I might have a problem as well. The thing is, I have two 'old' 16GB cards that have been working perfectly with my LEXAR FW800 reader so I didn't bother to upgrade the firmware on them.

Now I got a third 16GB card that (I think) does have the new firmware and funny enough that one is giving me problems. The LEXAR does mount it and read it but yesterday my footage had dropped frames in them while I wasn't doing anything special. RedCine crashed when I read the footage directly from the reader but was okay when I copied to my hard drive first.

I'll do some testing now to see if I can trace the problem.

Okay I did some testing and I almost positive there is a problem with the combination of my card and the LEXAR FW800 reader.

On the camera the footage looks fine, nothing wrong. But if I open the clips directly in RedCine there are random dropped frames, they are black with red timecode. They are random because every time I reload the footage in RedCine directly from the card they appear in different places. Once I copy the footage to my hard disk the dropped frames are baked in and appear at the same time. RedCine likes to crash on them too. In Clipfinder they appear garbled or green and render like that too.

I have used my LEXAR for over a year now and never had a problem with it.

My system is a 2009 MacPro 8-core.

Can you please contact support if you can let us have a look at the problem reader?
