I can see the appeal of the little A-Minima as a director/shooter off on your own, grabbing things, without having to get approval from a bunch of people sitting in front of a monitor. You've got the wide latitude of film, a small camera, no cables, etc. And all the "organic" texture and happy accidents (and not so-happy accidents).
It's nice to live in a world where we still have options of what to shoot, from Super-8 to IMAX, from DV to RED, etc.
And if Hunter can afford to buy a RED package and then turn around and buy an A-Minima package, he's obviously doing well enough in life!
Beautiful stuff, by the way. Makes me want to run out and shoot something.
Sure, you can process digital stuff to look like softer, grainier 16mm and Super-8, but that's a bit like painting a house blue so you can turn it green in post, rather than paint it green in the first place. Having endless options in post to change your mind is not necessarily the best way to learn your art and craft.
For RED to "win", every other format doesn't have to "lose".
